Yes that is the scientist who invented the WWW. If you have someone's name just Google it and you can find out all about that person.

Kim well done!. I was hoping that I was not the only one that felt that this guy needed to be mentioned, since if you mention someone like Bill Gates everyone knows. But Tim was the real founder of the WWW, and without him so many others would not be able to live the way that we do!.

You honestly think it was well done that someone answered with the name of the inventor of the WWW to a question posted on the WWW?

Yeah, IBM and MS relegated HIM to a footnote, and did him a disservice. MS/DOS(aka PC/DOS) was basically a KNOCKOFF of kildalls product. In fact, COMPAQ went to a LOT of trouble to emulate the IBM PC(They couldn't LEGALLY copy it as IBM could conceivably SUE them, so programmers examined a system, created specs, gave them to lawyers which then gave them to OTHER programmers to design the BIOS). The lawyers made sure nothing was tainted so they could say that they designed it without looking at the computer.

Anyway the interesting thing was that you could come VERY close to getting things right by looking at any decent CP/M internals book! They were THAT close! The original name of MS/DOS was CP/M 86! CP/M worked on the 8080, and the IBM computer used it's cousin, the 8088(which was a poor mans version, and software compatible with, the 8086).

Yeah, at least THIS guy has evidence behind him, etc... I of course knew about him back when the first version of netscape was just taking off, etc... Somehow a lot of people believed that a person that was probably a minor player in a minor revision of a format that had already been around a while and had several competitors, somehow made the WWW. He died recently, and they started coming out of the woodwork.

To put it into perspective, wikipedia says that tim berners lee proposed it when the other guy was not even 3yo, and demonstrated it about the tie the other guy was 3yo! Marc Andreessen, yet ANOTHER guy, created the first HTTP browser as we know it 4 years later. When aaron was about 7. BTW The first version of RSS was released by MA's company around 1999.

I really wouldn't credit ANY of them with the INTERNET. That was done by several people LONG ago, and predates MOST of the stuff discussed today by a decade or two! TBL and MA are, however, the undisputed inventors of the WWW, and I hope the future is smart enough to know that it has been DONE! NOBODY in the future can lay claim to inventing what has already been invented.

BTW so you know....The internet is computers, routers, Ethernet, TCP/IP,URLS, URIs, Domain names and the routines and applications to handle that infrastructure. The WWW is HTML, HTTP, etc... and things built on that. TBL did the back end infrastructure(code and specs) for the WWW, and MA basically made the front end as we know it.

Fair play if Kim knew that. Not to detract from anyones knowledge!

My point was that it's just a matter of typing the name into Google as already mentioned and being such a prominent person on this very medium the answer will be right there so generally speaking it's not good basis for a quiz!

I typed "Internet" initially. I'm aware of what the WWW is. Honestly I didn't Google though I did spend most of my GNVQ IT days in college clowning around.

That was a pretty easy question, Kristabelle, but sentiment behind asking it was nice. So below is a question for you, almost as easy as your question. See if you can answer it without looking it up.

    Who is Marc Andreessen?

Dennis, Yep knew that one too.. : ) The other guy - thanks seasoned for putting it so well..

I think we owe it to the guys that worked in basements or garages that paved the way for us today to enjoy what we do.

Dadgum it! I only skimmed your post. I had just gotten back from watching the superbowl and it takes my eyes a good while to adjust back to the computer screen. Your words were blurring together. Next year, try to remember to write shorter posts after the superbowl.

As far as knowing this stuff, if you were a natural geek and also went to college for computer sciences, you probably got these questions on your basic computing tests.
Here is what my first computer was:
