Comfortably numb? The 'Morphine lip balm' that promises to paralyse your pout

Most lip-plumping products promise to make your lips tingle, but the latest gloss to hit the market contains a numbing agent so potent, it has been named after a hospital pain killer.
Morphine Lips' new balm contains four per cent benzocaine, an over-the-counter painkiller usually found in cough sweets and mosquito bite sprays.
The $17.50 product, which is 'designed to create the perfect kiss', causes the lips to tingle and go numb for a short period.

We've had thousands of years of practice kissing. We suddenly need drugs to be able to kiss? Wow. I didn't know we'd become that bad off. No I am convinced that scientists are correct that we are evolving into two separate species.

  If it makes lips numb, though, it might prevent diarrhea of the mouth - so it might be a great present for a spouse.

How is having numb lips good for kissing? The closest thing I can relate to this is getting novocaine at the dentist. I've always hated that feeling and it sure doesn't make me feel romantic. Maybe morphine is different, but I'm not going to line up to try it.

  I don't know about having numb lips but after a fist kiss a couple weeks ago I had weak knees and could hardly walk straight. I love first kisses. :p

  "Interesting" product-name: there's no morphine in it, needless to say. (They'll be hearing from the Advertising Standards Authority or Trading Standards people over that name, possibly).
  
  "Benzocaine" sounds like it might be a benzodiazepine, but no: it's only ethyl aminobenzoate. Still, the drugs mentioned here are a lot nicer than the Ritalin I was just reading about in another thread. :p
