The Rich See a Different Internet Than the Poor: Scientific American

Imagine an Internet where unseen hands curate your entire experience. Where third parties predetermine the news, products and prices you see—even the people you meet. A world where you think you are making choices, but in reality, your options are narrowed and refined until you are left with merely the illusion of control...

Exactly why I have the Better Privacy pluggin to erase my LSO cookies (super cookies). I'm sure it's not enough - but it helps.

I spoke about this like a month or so ago. It is ******NOT****** personalization! Someone tells me about a funny thing, or I click a link on warriorforum or something, and suddenly almost EVERY ad shows THAT! Of course google now thinks that that is a deep interest of mine, and it affects everything. This isn't even good advertising.

HECK, I closed a couple charge accounts this month, and a "creditor" called me to say they couldn't charge me. BIG MISTAKE! They are a company that I decided to boycott about 28 years ago. When I did, I went to a competitor of theirs. They bought the competitor last year, and so I was tricked into violating my boycott. I cancelled it, told them I never wanted to hear from them again, etc...., like I did when I started the boycott. Well, they wrote me yesterday to say they couldn't charge me again!!!!!!! REMEMBER, I closed the account, and TOLD them I did! I closed the account! Anyway, with the research I did on their stupid company, I am getting THEIR ads now!!!!!!

Frankly, I think it is STUPID that a company like google that is FILLED with people that DON'T know me think they can know me simply by what I search for. I search for LOTS of things. Sometimes I search for things HEAVILY! MOST of them I am NOT interested in. BESIDES, I have lately been searching for thngs I NEVER searched for before. I would NOT want to be locked out because someone ELSE figures they know me better than I do.

I once returned to a hotel. They had a welcome basket that included an odd candy bar that I did NOT like. I thought and thought I had the answer. I checked, and it WAS! They found a wrapper for that bar in the trash. They could not have known it was for me, though it was. So WHY did I eat the candybar? I was HUNGRY, and the vending machine gave me the wrong item.

And YEAH, you can clear cookies, etc... A lot of marketers suggest that, to ensure a given sale NEVER realizing that they have now lost ALL cookies that visitor might have for THEM! AND, frankly, I HATE having to log in again, etc... for such a stupid reason.

But it is NOT going to affect a persons political views unless THEY go to a site that is advertised in that way and most such people lean there. If they are even SLIGHTLY another way, or SLIGHTLY interested, they have a good chance at seeing both sides. Want proof? OK... Well, a person I did NOT vote for on 2012 has been writing to me a LOT! His campaign and others have sent me 227 different emails. The last one was sent 2/14/2013! YEP, THIS YEAR, and only 5 days ago. I guess last week was a slow week for them. And YES, I read them. And YEAH, I went to his site. But it is hard to know WHO to believe and I don't do things so blindly. I was once accused of basing my views on one person. I said NOT ONLY did I have the views before I heard of him, I listen to a guy that hates his guts about 3 times as much! OK, the opponents show was on at a better time for me, but I listened.

NOW, what is "Cass Sunstein"'s excuse? Apparently he is far more extreme than I am. HECK, his LIFE is built around it.

Can see that they could afford a faster internet, but the rest is a bit far-fetch. Never know though what may happen.

Actually, for the most part, speed is a function of where you live. I pay more for my internet than the average poor person. So I am not sure you can even say that poor or rich makes that much difference.

As for content, I think cass just wants more control over his ads, etc.... admittedly the way they are done now is MORONIC!

It's common knowledge that search engine results and such are tailored to each person.

There was a website that tested this (I forgot where, I'm looking for it now). In the test they get different people to search for the same things, and each person had a different search results page as it's based on things you've visited in the past, your history and so on (all comes down to cookies).

Just like as others have said in this post, if you search for something online, chances are next time you see a Google AdSense banner ad, it's related to what you recently searched for.

To counter this I use a browser plug-in called "DoNotTrackMe". It blocks certain things on sites like advertising networks and such and it allows you to see what networks are tracking you on the specified site.

The image below shows what is tracked on the WarriorForum as an example -

As I said before, personally I use a plugin called DoNotTrackMe more info can be found at
Do Not Track Me - and the plugin can be downloaded for almost all browsers.

There are tons of alternatives online, in the meantime I will look for the article I mentioned above.

Update - here is the mini article I was talking about regarding "tailored seach enigne results" (Only takes around 2 minutes to read both - they are infographics). Worth checking out, rather interesting.

Well I think most of us on the forum have a pretty good grasp of how SEO and personalizing works ie: cookies, etc. - but this article seems to be addressing another level that is in a way selecting and predetermining what you may see based on another set of data, and economics, that have been mined from another source other than tracking your usage and preference? That's why I put the article up, I thought it would be of interest -
That other 19 clicks to get to any spot on the internet story...I'm getting sceptical about, but maybe the metric holds true...
