NH House voting on free ski passes for lawmakers

I know, OK, it's a little political - but I just thought in the current economic climate, asking for free skiiing passes was so ludicrous...like, who comes up with bills like this?

CONCORD, N.H. —New Hampshire's House is voting this week whether lawmakers should get free ski passes for Cannon Mountain.

The majority of the Legislative Administration Committee is recommending killing a bill Wednesday that would grant the legislative perk.

A one-day lift ticket is $70 for an adult and the bill allowed unlimited free access.
Opponents say using the perk a half dozen times would be worth twice as much as lawmakers' biennial salary.

Supporters argue that lawmakers have open access to state parks which promotes awareness of the locations.

They say skiing at Cannon doesn't add costs to the ski area and encourages members to experience that part of New Hampshire culture.

      Their salary is $250 a year which seems pretty odd. It would be my guess that none of them are in any need of money or a free ski pass.

        Hey it's "Live Free or Die".. right? The servants of the people are really taking it to heart.. the free part anyway. I was surprised to learn they get that small a stipend as well...(but it is a pretty small state)

    If I were king, I would give them an award! What would THAT be? BANISHMENT FOR LIFE FROM ALL even REMOTELY politically associated businesses FOR LIFE, for embezzlement and extortion! I mean if they so much as use the same name on a book, lobby, argue a ticket, or some such.

    Frankly, they are supposed to be public SERVANTS! They get paid VERY VERY VERY well. The perks just make it SICK! They shouldn't have freeer access to the parks EITHER! And skiing DOES add costs! On the lifts, there is wear and tear, cleaning, power, and wait times. If EVERYONE had 100% free access NOBODY would want it because they would be waiting FOREVER! Could you imagine 300+ million people trying to do that around the SAME time!? OK, OK, so it is a smaller number. You get my point.

    And what of the cleaning, preparation, etc...?

    I see it as a good thing.

    If a lawmaker & their family enjoys something state owned (or whatever) they'll most likely keep it funded/supported for everyone else to enjoy.

      I don't think the state owns the resort, but I could be wrong (any skiers in NH?)

          I'm sure the argument can be or will be made they are basically donating their time and this is just a "small" thing. But really, the economy isn't in that great shape and if they can serve for basically less than what they probably spend in gasoline getting to and from their duties, why not spend that money helping out a food bank instead of a ski pass?

    After reading this story...free ski passes don't sound so bad any more...

    Even PER MONTH is low. Maybe it is like BILL. I heard the term bill(in the US this can mean $1), in radio means $100! If someone in the average US R/E market tells you a home is 440, they almost ALWAYS mean $440,000! ALSO, there are OTHER perks. Still, an unlimited pass? Oh well, at least it is N.H., no sales tax. I HAVE heard rumors that other taxes are high though.
