The US postoffice is talking about creating a CLOTHING LINE! UNREAL!

The US taxpayer does NOT pay them to make a profit, or even sell coins! They are supposed to facilitate the mail. If they can't do that and stay in business, they should reduce it to a licensing department to license OTHERS! They used to use others ANYWAY! I don't think they have ANY planes, for example. Northwest, for example, got its start as a plane based air courier!

  • Steve,
Thjis is a HUGE misconception that people have. The US Taxpayers does not pay the post anything.
    And haven't since 1971.
The US GOVERNMENT has tried unsuccessfully to put the USPS out of business for years, and they are finally coming close.

Where I live I have the absolute worst postal service I have ever seen.
But I also know that it could have been run very efficently but instead the government ran it into the ground.

I mean come on,how many other businesses let their competition place pick up boxes in fron of their front doors like the post office did for both UPS and FedEx??

    • It's correct that not a penny of revenue for the USPS comes from tax payers.

And I also agree that some politicians want to have the USPS fail so that all delivery will be privatized, despite the USPS being part of the US Constitution.

The Postmaster General recently came public with the real problem with the USPS. It seems that in 2006 Congress passed an act the required the USPS to fund their retirement program for 75 years in advance in a 10 year period of time. No other entity of the gov has to do anything similar.

If it weren't for this outrageous requirement, the USPS would have actually had a $1.5 billion surplus last year.

I wonder who's getting donations from FedEx and UPS?

BTW, the USPS is the second largest employer in the US, behind only Walmart, and employs more veterans than anyone else. And if it didn't have the BS retirement fund quota, it would be solvent.

    • Yeah, I told THAT story, that you said, to a POSTOFFICE worker, IN THE POST OFFICE! He said "That's news to ME! I STILL get my paycheck from the US treasury". That was sometime in the late 80s, as I recall.

As for the UPS and fedex boxes, they probably get a commission. I could turn that around to you and say HOW MANY companies made it ILLEGAL to provide service to their boxes, even ones THEY didn't pay for? HECK, one POST MAN delivered holiday cards to people ON HIS ROUTE, and HE got in trouble because they didn't have postage!

That website about why you should be upset was interesting. It claimed that the postoffice got nothing from the government but that some wanted to take it private. It ALSO said the government dictate what it could and couldn't do

  • Why You Should Be Outraged By What Is Being Done to Our Postal Service

But about the clothing line...Gee, I dunno...but it's always been a real snappy look

    Disgruntled?...or Disheveled?

    • 3M,
At the prices they charged it should be. We got an annual clothing allowance. I don't remember what the amount was,but I'm sure it has gone up since I was there. I'm thinking it was about $150.And with that I could usually get a shirt a pair of pants and a tie,or if you put in a little cash, like about $20,you could add a sweater!
But I do have a real bargain for you,I have 10 years of uniforms I can let you have real cheap, and then you too can look like a cool Postal Employee!

  • Kurt,
Yep.I don't know when Wal Mart overtook them, but the USPS was the largest employer and especially the largest veteran employer for years.

    Steve,

I'll have to read the link 3M posted, but your story about the Postal employee not knowing anything about it is very believable.
My post office has some of the worst and rudest clerks I have ever seen, and the Postmaster won't do a damn thing about it.
I was there to pay my PO box and watched as an elderly female clerk was rude to someone that was just trying to ask a question and yelled at a customer for not having a form filled out properly.
I was shocked at what I saw back when I worked for the USPS,but I am more shocked at what I see today.

    • Yeah, I told him the story because I wanted validation. The story was told to me by ANOTHER postal carrier.

      Steve
  • Sorry,no.
    What a pithy!

(Sorry,I lied.I got rid of all my uniforms right away after I quit).
  • Yep - that's what I want is an outfit that will make half the dogs in Amerika hate me on sight. Good plan.
