Activists stand by sequoia tree to be cut down | kgw.com Portland

PORTLAND -- Activists stood beside a 12-story sequoia tree Thursday morning that the city of Portland planned to cut down to make way for a pedestrian and bicycle greenway.
...The tree at the center of the controversy is a giant sequoia that stands about 120 feet tall and measures 18 feet around. It's one of a couple dozen giant sequoias in Pier Park, but the only one on the chopping block.
Interesting conundrum...but I don't know why they just can't go around the tree???
This is Portland, after all...Trees, Bikes, and Brews...and food wagons...
Don't Californicate Oregon! :p

The city, in turn, said it will plant seven giant sequoias, along with dozens of other trees...
That's great, they can enjoy a new sequoia in less than 3,000 years.

    Fools...

MAN, that tree is not just a tree. It may have all sorts of creatures, provides shade, etc... It ALSO reduces CO2 and increases oxygen!

Who thinks up this crap? Lets cut down one of the last old growth trees in the country and put in a slab of cement - then we can scream to hell and back about "global warming". After all what's a park without lots and lots of cement?

No, Sal, it's a "greenway" - cut down a a giant tree and plant grass?

And the story comes from a state that portrays itself as a major "green" contributor/leader in the country.

Oh wait - the tree will be used - after it's ground up for mulch.

"It will help kids connect with nature, and provide a sustainable, natural playground in the first such endeavor across our system,"
Sounds like a posturing fool - help kids connect with nature by keeping them on a safe little path and away from those dangerous trees?

I'd get a second opinion from another civil engineer to check if the path could be moved without great expense.

However, creating a 10.5 mile bike path that could take 100s or even 1000s of cars off the street daily isn't something that should be over-looked and the tradeoff of one tree for fewer cars deserves serious consideration.

They have cut down a 3000 yrs old- 12 storey- good old giant sequoia tree?
They must really love grass... now I understand...

It's going to help the environment and make a some small animals and all sorts of creatures homeless.

The path could have been made to circle around the tree. This was just moronic. These legislators in Oregon have not one clue about nature but they are sure writing a lot of legislation on it . Maybe we should force them off the highways and into the woods and desert for awhile so they at least understand the concept of land without parking lots and parks. They have to make parks out of everything here.

...and it seems their concept of a "park" is a man made path and a piece of grass. Wow - how interesting...not.
