Am I the only person who hates video content?

I feel like I am alone with everyone being so pro video these days. Personally I cant stand it... if I am looking for something, the last thing I want to do is watch a 10 minute video explaining something I could read and comprehend as text in under two minute.

Especially with news or products, I just want to read it at my pace which is faster than all of the fluff and buildup. For me, if all I see on your site is video without a written transcript, I just surf away and you never have the opportunity to make your pitch. I don't have the time.

So am I the normal one or the nut?

THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!! *****************THANK YOU****************! I feel the EXACT same way! I HATE some IDIOT claiming he will be brief, when he just wasted 5 minutes of time, and I could have read the whol thing in HALF that time! It wastes bandwidth, realestate, and time, and for WHAT?

Video is just like anything else. If you have a idiot making a video, guess what? The video will suck. By far video is much better than written text.

Maybe we ought to start up one of those special WF boards. I'm not much of a fan of video either. Good example. Today on the main board there was a post about getting a 30% discount on Amazon books. I buy a lot of books from Amazon so I clicked on the thread only to find the explanation was a 13+ minute video. Click, bang! I'm gone, even for 30% off.

Yep, that seriously P**** me off as well, nothing worse than loading up a video that goes for 2 hours, can't be fast forwarded, and has some twit, crapping on about his family, pet and how he was broke, blah, blah, blah!!!!

Cut the crap, and get to the part we are waiting for, or at least give us a gem, to stop us from reducing the video, and checking our emails, while he craps on about his life history!

IM marketers time is precious, and we don't need the fluff! Unfortunately some professional marketers out there say it increases conversions, etc by crapping on about your life history! Maybe that is true, for newbies or retiree's or possibly mothers, but IM'ers, NO! For us it is slash and burn, give us the gist so we can buy or do a runner!

Exactly why I never put up a sales page for my PLR. Why should I bother designing content for someone who clicked because they know what hey want and just wanna see if I have it? I give the details of what it is they are getting and a buy button. Period. Nobody that has ever bought from me ever complained once about not weeding through a salespage to find out what the pkg is. Website owners shouldn't need a salespage to buy content or apps for their sites.

The quickest way to get me off a site is to have an audio or video run that I didn't click onto of my own volition.

I actually saw ONE video, and I left it on. I went out, had lunch, went browsing a few stores, had a snack, came back and, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, and I am NOT kidding! It was STILL running!!!!!! It was HOURS later!

And I hate these people that try to get you with piecemeal ads I am SICK of them. One company has newsletters that they sell into the tens of thousands of USD! Half the things end up advertising still OTHER letters that have content they claimed you would get. They tell so may half truths, and start sounding like LRH, that it makes me SICK! Anyway, ALL their advertising is VIDEO!

Another guy has a FREE site, and he basically finds out what the other guys are talking about and lets you know!

And what of the videos with guys drawing pictures? YIKES!

Depends on what it is, but most of the time I prefer a PDF. Things like learning a new photoshop technique are often easier with a short video though.

It really depends on what it is. If I want to know how to use a new piece of software, the first thing I do is look it up on You Tube. I'd rather that than have only written instructions to guide me, but I like to have both options. I will do audio, video, and/or written content/transcript in PDF. If I do a sales page, I do both. I keep my video as short as I can, and then have points underneath of what I've just discussed (for those who prefer to read). What you are all saying is that, as internet marketers, we have to be aware that not everyone likes the same thing. That's important to remember.

Vidoe's are "RUSK" (sorry... local slang... means rubbish) for both marketing and watching. Does the world really think that instant messages, TXT and stupid videos will hold the attention of a "real" person? A person with some intelligence? People with money tend to research, research and then........ (yes you guess it) ... If you are after a quick sign up then go for it? If you after a life long customer..... try again!

First of all, TV adds are INSTANTANEOUS! They literally seem to happen at the speed of light. On the computer, they slow them down, and may even crash the computer. It could literally take MONTHS to see a video on a computer, and that is if you EVEN want to. ALSO, GOOD TV adds are based on something the demographic may want, and often try to do something to CATCH the attention. STILL, with all of that, everyone knows that people leave, etc....

Many that click on some stupid hype, and find themselves on a video ad, just click away, having never seen it. And what if you DO want to see it? They may FORBID you to see it! The part you wanted to see may fly by, you miss it, and find there is no way to replay what you missed! And apparently many people are now LEARNING this! It took them MONTHS, but they are learning. On many, they now provide a way to bring up a transcript! If you try to click away, they often make that clear.

TV ads are instant and video on the Net takes "literally months". Got it. Thanks for telling me how long it takes me to watch a video.

Also, good point about seeing videos on a computer and if people will even want to. No one wanting to watch video on a computer explains why no one visits Youtube or watches videos on Facebook, or Netflix for that matter.

In some cases, such as "how to's" I like videos and often showing someone how to do something is better than telling them how to do it.

On the other hand, there's times when videos are a total waste of time, and made even worse by the creator not taking the time to edit the video to make it as to the point as possible.

I like having a choice. What I hate more than anything is a page that has only a video - and then doesn't even allow you to take action until the video is finished. I'll never buy from a page like that, I don't care how bad I want the product.

If this is in "off-topic" because it's intended as a thread for people to whine about video and how grotesquely over-used, badly used, unnecessarily used and generally misused it very widely is, count me IN, please, gentlemen.

And if anyone wants to throw rotting fruit at the first "but it works", I'll happily supply the fruit.

I'm all out of "thanks" for the day, it seems, and can't even give Ron, Steve and others their due, here.

When I discuss internet marketing with my subscribers (in all my different niches), which I do intermittently and with quite a bit of interest in what I can learn from them because some of it's been really helpful to me, video (and its various widespread misuses and over-uses) is always very high on the list of things that people just intensely dislike, even without my mentioning it or asking them that specifically. Videos without controls, and videos that play automatically seem to be the worst offenders, but there are plenty of others, too.

But guess what? In a marketing forum, people with "video-service related signature-file links" are going to be in favor of videos.

      ^^^^^^^^^^ This.

The ones that really p*ss me off are the ones that begin playing automatically. These are generally at a deafening volume as well.

Just think about the guy or gal taking a sneaky peak at a site at their place of work.

All of a sudden the office silence is shattered by "Do you want to give your boss the sack?", or some such variant.

Even if they manage to keep their job, they are NOT going to buy anything from you - EVER!

I love videos that hold me hostage and force me to listen to the end to ascertain what, if any, point it is making, especially when it intrudes on what others in the room are doing. It pleases me to repeatedly click off the page and get a pop-up offering me something else....NOT!

I cannot stand videos either - especially if you cannot at least pause them and if they
    take to long to render.

I don't know this for a fact, but when it comes to Video Sales Letters, it seems like
a certain marketer said the forced watch ones convert best and almost everyone in IM since has not questioned that.

I'd like to see "click here for the PDF version" and "click here for the bullet point version".

Yep, IM videos that drag on and on, and don't say very much in the way of life changing content, also get on my wick!

The IM'er that had the weird wedding, (the videos were posted here) that was more of a infomercial, is a good example.

Someone here posted his video recently, l tried to watch one, but the content was, oh-hum, and they even filmed someone in the audience who was nodding off!

I can understand why, you give oh-hum quality content to freebie seekers, and pretty good content to paid members and the life changing stuff to people or co, that are seriously coffing up!

The marketers that give away quality freebies, tend to do better than IM'ers that crap on for hours on end, in videos, etc, and just bore seasoned IM'ers, into clicking away, and click away if they come across their "see-spot-run" content again!

I click off a LOT of pages with info I actually WANT to know because they are forcing me to watch a video to get it. I think everyone who does the video thing deserves to land on a page where they have to wait for that damned thing to load, it freezes every few seconds afterward, provides nothing I really wanted to know that I couldn't have sorted out of text rather quickly.

As Kurt said, there are times you might need a video rather than text -- they are rare and should be treated as such.

Yes! I hate videos, especially long ones. I'm a visual learner so you would think videos would be great for me, but I would rather read the text and view pictures if applicable. Why? Because I can read and understand the concept faster over hearing it through a video. Plus, if I need to go back to a particular point, it's so much easier to scan properly formatted text, over trying to pinpoint the exact min or seconds in a video.

Maybe IM'ers create videos because they think they are more professional, more personal, because they see IM Person A doing it so they play follow the leader? I don't know, I don't get it. Videos have their place, but for most things in life, KISS - Keep it Stupid, Simple.

Sorry, I've been here for a decade and still don't know what he's talking about most of the time and I still can't find my Stevense to English dictionary.

I disagree. It seems many on this thread are talking about sales letters and long video courses. I dislike them both too. I saw a WSO that "bragged" about having 10 hours of training videos. That wasn't a selling point. For me, it was THE reason I didn't buy.

However, there's much more to video than IM sales letters and courses and many things that are better in video format, like how to change an alternator or knit a sweater. I wanted to make Hatch enchillada sauce and went to Youtube and there's videos showing me how to prepare and scrape the chilis, which I just couldn't have gotten from text.

The funny thing is, of the two people that visit the Off Topic forum the most, you and John Durham are the two that could really use videos. Every time you go looking for shiny objects could be a training/entertainment video. John is both big in local/off line markeing and guitars, both great for video creation and marketing.

If done right, can't video help a small company looking for a break? Something that catches the eye and is no longer than 4 minutes could help attract customers. And as long as it's not mandatory to watch, and doesn't start automatically why not place it on your page?

  • The worst are pages where you just need some basic information like the dates for a conference. But all the information is wrapped up in a long video.

I can't find where and when the conference is unless I invest 40 minutes? Oy!

While I'm ranting about videos, for your 3 minute tutorial we don't need to sit through your Hollywood-style, 1 minute long intro theme. On every friggin video.

I agree. Intros are great for branding, but should be kept to 10 seconds or less.

Plus, a rule of video making is that the intro should NEVER be of higher quality than the video itself, as it leads to a let down.

I don't love or hate anything associated with IM or business in general. I don't put that much emotional investment into it.:p

I like videos when they are technical "how tos" for software installation/use, fixing something or whatever. They show me which button to push - which line to fill out, etc - and make things faster. That said, I like it when the entire process is covered - instead of 20 videos that each address one simple task in an installation process.

I dislike videos of jabber - even when there is a point to be made. I am an extremely fast reader and easily bored out of my mind by people who speak slowly or have strong accents that are hard to understand.

I appreciate sellers who offer both a written and video approach so the buyer has a choice.

Yeah, hate is a strong word. Somewhat annoyed is more like it for me. More than somewhat annoyed if I come across such automatically starting videos and downsells, popups, etc. after I purchase a product.

My sentiments exactly. On my landing page, although I have my video to start automatically, it wasn't recorded loud and I kept the video controls in the embed code so people can always stop or pause the video, or just mute it and then scroll below for the written content.

As for video in general, not for video sales letters, it's actually pretty important to embed a video into blog posts. It helps with time-on-page and it's good for branding.

Overall, I much prefer video to PDF when I'm trying to learn how to do something. I also know how to fast-forward a video if they get to off-topic blabbing.

nevermind the video, some people are giving us a hard time by giving us a VERY LOUD SOUND you don't want to hear. And it is so sudden and that makes it really annoying and not productive at all. I prefer if they just explain it with a written text, or maybe they can't do it.

Yep, they blow your eardrums with an insanely loud intro, then, you have to turn it up to hear them, only to get blasted again at the end!!!! Grrrrrr!

Only thing that is worse are ad's you can't get around that are insanely loud!

Maybe P**** off a customer and making them deaf, increases sales????

Or maybe they are a dumb marketer, that got their video done for $5, and didn't bother checking it out first!

Either way unless they are selling hearing aids to the partially deaf, they will probably go out of business eventually! :p

Good riddance, the stupidly loud ad's on tv are bad enough!

The only type of video I hate are the promotional kind that start automatically, go on for a long time and don't even give you a timer so you know how long it is. Inevitably, when you click away you get at least one "Wait! Don't Leave Yet!" messages. This is an example of a "sophisticated" marketing tactic that just makes the offer look spammy.

If you are going to use video for promotion, I think a plain old YouTube one is better because it's more straightforward and looks like a "normal" person created it. I'm not reassured by someone who has a whole arsenal of cutting edge marketing software to blast at me.

Even with training, written content can be easier to follow. Sometimes, however, instructional videos can be useful. At least with those, I can control when to watch it.

I don't hate all video content, just most of it. The real problem is the author padding the video out with junk instead of just getting on with it. Every time I hear "Hey Guys", "What's Up" etc I know I'm in for BS. However when done right I find videos are brilliant and far better than a written source, particularly for hands on guides.

Hay guys, have you ever wanted.....blah, blah, blah.

Then our eyes glaze over, and we make the video area smaller and check our emails, waiting for the story about his rags to riches, crap gets out the way, including the endless screen shots of Clickbank results, which are really meaningless, (they just use their and their friends huge lists)!

But l do, take a peek when he talks about his mansion, holiday cars, etc.

Then after 10 to 15 minutes of this crap about his beautiful wife, luxery houses, and holidays and how he has to pinch himself every day, we finally get to something that can help us!

Although most of the time it is just pushing some software!

Another thing that is annoying is how they hype up their oh-hum offers, and act like it's gods gift to humanity.

You know.....Hi Jake, (promoter) l can't believe how effective this BS Exterminator system is, l just clicked on a couple of buttons, and my bank account was flooded, with BS, and l am a total moron online, so anyone could do this......Arrrrrgggg

Yeah, that is another thing, l recently saw a video, (l won't drop names) but l have been a subscriber with him for years.

And he went on about, not following through with his advise, and gave an example of someone following his advise who after spending $250 on advertising got virtually nothing, while someone else did the same and made a great profit.

Obviously he tested it more, etc, but then he went on saying how the person who blew $250 shouldn't give up and move on.

Good advise on the surface, but not if this person has limited funds, then his system may not be the best one?

Its obviously better to test something for $50 than a couple of hundred, so if some do a runner it may not be because they are quitters, just that they can't afford his system!

Not sure whether this "my system is the best, and quitters are losers" syndrome is widespread, or not?

What most are looking for online is something they can do, that won't cost a fortune to get going and where they can make what they want!

So, its not that they are quitters, just looking for something better, (not taking into account "shiny object syndrome)!

I find it incredibly annoying, but we're doomed to see more of it as literacy continues to drop. But yeah, I don't want to hear anyone drone on at 150 words per minute when I can skim and comprehend at 800. My time is too valuable to me.

In the last year, with the exception of software tutorials, I only remember one "teaching" video where I felt the video version was far superior to the transcript (it was a TED talk). You have to be an excellent speaker (or a very attractive guy ) for me to want to watch your video for long.

If you're developing a product, give me a transcript/PDF, or I'm not buying.

If you're putting content on a website, remember that Google doesn't read the words in a video. While video is helpful in that it keeps people on the site longer, and Google likes that, the smart move for SEO is to always offer a transcript of the video on the same page.

As someone who prefers to read versus watch videos (generally speaking), I find these comments very interesting.

I, too, HATE when someone drones on and on endlessly, doesn't get to the point, gives me an hour-long video when a 10-min. one will do just as well, etc. I also DESPISE it when 1) someone doesn't allow me to pause, rewind or fast forward the video and/or 2) has JUST a video on the sales page.

HOWEVER, I don't necessarily buy into what everyone is saying here. We ARE a TV/video society. The vast majority of Americans spend untold hours in front of their TV and TV has a HUGE influence on our society. And as someone whose day job is doing tech support for phone, Internet and cable services, I have personal experience with how irate people get when their TV's not working.

So don't tell me video isn't important or influential. That's complete B.S. America IS a dumbed-down society of TV-watching zombies. I've had my fair share of not-so-smart people cussing me out because their cable was out and gosh!, what were they gonna do now??? (Literally.)

But you all are right in that it's often not used well or effectively.

I, too, am a fast reader and prefer to read. However, in looking at my own buying behavior, I realized I came to feel like I actually knew someone if I had seen them live, on video. And therefore, I'm much more likely to buy from them, especially if it's a higher-priced course ($1K and up).

Given that we rarely ever meet the people we buy from online, video is the next best thing for letting people see you and get to "know" you. Short 2-10-minute videos with tips or tutorials are a great way to build the know-like-trust factor. And I prefer to let video SUPPLEMENT the sales page or PDF (or whatever), instead of provide ONLY video.

I took a video course last year and am just now getting around to actually USING it. I'm not a video kind of person and am very uncomfortable being on camera. But I also know if I can learn to do short videos with me on camera, it will go a long way towards building rapport and a solid relationship with my peeps.

So I'm on a mission to get past my own video fears and phobias and do this. But I think less is more and will use it as a SUPPLEMENT. I don't see myself ever using it as the main content, either for a marketing campaign or for a course itself.

      Guys;

Of course we like reading more than video. This is a forum with printed posts. It's our media of choice.

But for every person reading at this minute, there are more that are watching TV, a video, a movie.....

Most people simply don't read enough to make it easier than watching a video. Me? I'm with you guys. I can skim a sales page faster than any video, and I'll get more out of it. But I'm not most people, and neither are you.

High end Webinars sell far more than any sales letter, especially if the speaker is interesting and the webinar is compelling. I'll listen to a 90 minute webinar. But would you read a 70 page sales letter? Maybe. Maybe not.

What I do hate is getting a video I can't pause, or stop. Maybe they convert better, I don't know. But they don't convert me better.

And I'm getting very worried.. Seasoned's (Steve's) last post made perfect sense to me.

I do not hate video content, but it is a pain to watch - more so if it is a squeeze page.

I do not look at squeeze pages that go on and on with video content and then reveal the price or the offer.

Ron, you're not alone - I especially get turned off by the videos that remove the controls so that you can't fast forward to the "meat" of the pitch -
In my opinion, a smart marketer offers a PDF transcript along with the video so that he targets those of us who prefer to read -

I'm a speed reader and I suspect like a few others who have commented here, can read faster through a pitch then by watching the same pitch on video.

I love video tutorials though for some things - and of course I love music videos or videos that are entertaining - but if you want me to buy something from you - dazzle me with your written word - and my wallet will respond in kind if your product is something I want or need.
