A teen's luck appears to have changed after a chance encounter with an Indiana restaurant owner during a 10-mile trek through ice and snow for a minimum wage job interview.

It all started on Friday, when Art Bouvier, the proprietor of Papa Roux, a Cajun restaurant in Indianapolis, was laying rock salt outside the establishment after an ice storm earlier that morning.

He said he was approached by a teen who asked him how far it was to 10th and Sherman.

  • It's tough finding a job these days. A guy that is offering twice what you were expecting is pretty lucky - in fact, VERY lucky - especially $14/hr to work in a restaurant bussing tables, or whatever he may be doing...

I mean, I saw somewhere where the Navy SEAL who shot Bin Laden is now retired from the Navy - and having a hard time finding a job - now "Former Navy SEAL - Killed Bin Laden" should look pretty good on a resume - you would think that would be a real plus...

Unless you're trying to get a job with Al Qaeda...

Stories like this redeem my faith in humanity, a little bit at a time.

Some good karma is coming the owner's way in the future

Exactly what I was thinking. All these atrocities happening on a daily basis...
Nice to hear something positive for a change.

Man, I am probably like 115 miles north of there. If I saw him HERE I would probably give him a job, well at least if I didn't have to worry about OBC!

10 miles! YIKES! Maybe they should give unemployed people that are looking for work a few day vouchers for public transportation, and if they ask for new ones within a year or so they could just submit proof that they physically looked the previous year.

That kind of dedication is rare.

I don't know how it would fly with the general public - but access to public transportation vouchers for unemployed to seek work or to go to an interview is not a bad idea - they could just apply for one at the unemployment office, where it could be tracked on their record...

Well, I heard yesterday that a woman with 2 kids that makes about $19K a year is "entitled" to $81K of benefits, and that INCLUDES a rebate of ALL her taxes! Free college, Free childcare, Free food, etc... ALL tax free! YIKES!

A bus might cost like WHAT? $3USD? So if we allowed them like 10 day trips, it would be enough to search forever if they verified every time, and would average a $30 expense. A relatively low expense that would allow people like this to avoid walking like that. 10 miles at a normal pace takes about 3 HOURS! SIX hours to get a job that you may lose on the first day because you can't get there on time? YIKES!

And that is a brisk walk on a good day This kid was walking in ice and snow - no telling what shape you'd be in be the time you got there...

In some countries, however...that would be a cakewalk -

It reminds me of the bit Sam Kinison used to do on people in Africa who walk 5 miles to get water...he would say, "why don't you just move to where the water is?"

You're right. I meant to mention that. As for the 5 miles to get water, I wonder about that for MANY reasons. Still, that is only like 1.5 hours. I once walked almost 5miles to school every day.

              This made me smile

I remember walking three miles through the snow to get to my restaurant job back in college--which actually paid slightly less than minimum wage--because the buses in the city I lived in were notorious for never running on time.

That's what makes me think bus vouchers won't do all that much to help many people in this situation, to be honest. If someone's walking 10 miles through the snow to get to a job interview, I'm guessing their local public transportation options aren't all that great to start with.

Well, I forget even why I walked all that distance to school, although it WAS a nice safe trip and almost half way there was a plaza where I always got a snack. A drink and a brownie TOGETHER then cost $.50!

I HAVE taken buses and a few times they were late or apparently never came, and I usually ended up walking. To tell you the truth though, I was once trapped in an area. I could almost SEE where I had to go, but it was like 1-2 miles away. The snow was deep, and I WAITED there till people got back, rather than attempting the long and danger laden path home. There was no easy way to tell what was under the snow.

Welfare recipients and those on unemployment are given free bus passes already, at least here in Ohio. Now, whether an 18 year old with no kids qualifies, I'm not sure.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

That's an interesting precedent right there - how's that program working out?

It doesn't. Nice in theory, but it hasn't changed the numbers.

Yeah, THAT is why I suggested LIMITS! NON transferable, maximum of 10 outstanding, refills with PROOF! If they use up the ten, no proof, TOUGH, WE TRIED!

  • Funny - this story is getting a lot of press, but some seem to be getting it wrong - according to the story, he was GOING to walk 10 miles - if he had to, to get to the Dairy Queen interview - but he didn't HAVE to walk that far after all...the Cajun Restaurant is about 1/2 way there...

Every TV Newscast that has aired it I have seen so far emphasizes that he walked 10 miles!

So while I applaud his determination and willingness to do so, he really did not have to apparently go that far...he walked about 1/2 that distance - he lucked out by meeting the Cajun restaurant owner...

(but I guess technically, since he walked over 5 miles, he did walk 10 miles - to, and from, instead of the actual 20 he would have had to walk )

Once you start applying determination and willingness, you will find out that you don't have to go that far.

This doesn't happen in America anymore... people would rather get their welfare checks than walk across the street to a place with a NOW HIRING sign.
