Flushing British Monarchy Out Of Canada
Monarchy shouldn’t be part of Canada’s political future
"I went through the citizenship ceremony in 2009, one thing we had in common was our attitude towards reciting an oath to the queen. Far from being the prideful, clear chant that the citizenship handbooks demanded, it was a low murmur at best. I think we had too much personal pride to devalue ourselves by swearing allegiance to the monarchy — something that most Canadians don’t have to do, and that I doubt they would if it were asked of them.
We shouldn’t be asked to be proud of a system that, on a foundational level, robs us of autonomy. And if we can’t be proud of it, there’s no reason to keep it."
