Flushing British Monarchy Out Of Canada

Here is a well-stated opinion piece on disentangling independent country Canada from foreign monarchy.

Monarchy shouldn’t be part of Canada’s political future

"I went through the citizenship ceremony in 2009, one thing we had in common was our attitude towards reciting an oath to the queen. Far from being the prideful, clear chant that the citizenship handbooks demanded, it was a low murmur at best. I think we had too much personal pride to devalue ourselves by swearing allegiance to the monarchy — something that most Canadians don’t have to do, and that I doubt they would if it were asked of them.

We shouldn’t be asked to be proud of a system that, on a foundational level, robs us of autonomy. And if we can’t be proud of it, there’s no reason to keep it."

I guess I'm afflicted with Repetitive Royal Stress Syndrome. If CBC stopped reporting on those royal dullards so much, maybe I'd think about it less myself. Also, I dread the day I have to see Charles' ugly royal inbred face every time I use Canadian money.

If I was Prime Minister for life, I would definetely abolish the monarchy.

Lol, tell us what you think!
I like a person who speaks his mind and I agree with you.
I will take it a step further:
ugly, royal, inbred, overprivilliged, German face. I wouldn't mind having just a fraction of his money, though. Lucky *******.

If I compiled a list of things wrong with the world, my 600GB hard drive wouldn't be big enough.
Canadians getting a wild hair up their arse about the British monarchy amuses me at best.

That's not to say I don't agree with you, though. I have my own thoughts on the whole monarchy thing and let's just say, I don't think it's positive in any way, shape or form. It benefits nobody.
It's not something I think a lot an awful lot.

In my 3 years spent in Canada, I can't remember anyone giving a shit about it. At least I never heard anyone say anything negative about it. Who cares?

i am very proud of Canada's status as a monarchy and its affiliation with the British monarchy. It's like having a very large extended family! As a dominion, it connects us to many parts of the world and provides a historic and global feeling to our identity.

For me, the vestiges of imperialism are not something I look upon fondly. If conversations I have had with different folks are any indication, it is something I have in common with people around the world, including such countries as China and India. You could say that a contempt for the British monarchy gives me a connection with people all over the world.

The problem you have is that the alternative situation is unclear or undesirable.
ie, it will probably be a politician as head of state, elected by other politicians.
If most people don't like that alternative, the status quo remains.

Prince Charles does have a sizable chunk of wealth that he was born into, which provides a nice firm ground to stand on when pontificating to others about living a "sustainable" lifestyle. If everyone lived his lifestyle, the world's resources would be emptied in no time flat, lol. He's Britain's answer to Al Gore.

"...mostly, Prince Charles generated income from his inherited landed estate, Duchy of Cornwall estate which was built in 1337 by Edward III for his son and heir, Prince Edward. The main purpose of The Duchy is to provide a secure income for the prince and the future Princes of Wales. Today this estate has a property portfolio worth over one billion dollars."
