I told my 2-year-old that paper is not food when he put some in his mouth. He replied, "Termites eat paper! People eat termites." Toddler logic. He remembered this Youtube video that I played once weeks ago:

It's not bad logic. Surprising from a kid that young. Use the owls being poisoned by mice who ingested rat poison as an example.

But let him know not to eat the paper unless it's made from hemp or flax. There's no toxins used to make it from either of those things.........trees, not so much.

People may be able to ingest paper, but they can't digest paper. An elk "might" be able to, but not humans.

Today my 3 year old decided to take my ear buds apart and shove them up each nostril.

He has been sick for a week, so when he said "daddy, help me, it's stuck in my nose"
I thought he had boogers and got some tissue.

It took a flashlight and tweezers to fix the problem.

My mistake was getting the first one out and saying "hold this"

which he promptly ate and swallowed. ( boogers and all )

Kids .. gotta love em ... pfft

      LOL Ken!

Kids do the darnedest things. I've heard of pencil top erasers, string and raisins up the nose, but I must admit that is the first time I've heard of ear buds. As for the eating the booger coated ear bud...I'm speechless. No wait, I got something.

Don't worry, you'll get it back in a couple of days.

Termites don't really eat paper, but wood. They are among those creatures that can more easily digest the garbage, and get nutrition out of it. Cows are similar. They eat things humans would get little nutrition from, and succeed.

In a way, the termite is a processor. They eat stuff we couldn't, accumulate the nutrition, expel the bad waste, and we can digest them and got a lot of that stored nutrition.

BTW paper is processed in ways that may not be healthy, and uses the parts of wood that are mostly lacking any nutritional value, even for a termite.

I agree with heysal though, in that it is nice that he can process what I often refer to as different LEVELS of information. Too many today don't seem to be able to AT ALL!

A cow isn't close to an elk when it comes to digestion. Cow manure is a decent fertilizer. Elk manure is worthless as a fertilizer due to how efficient they are at extracting nutrients from what they eat. Elk can survive on tree bark for periods of time if they have to.

I used the most popular animal I was somewhat familiar with. Besides, different animals need different nutrition. Like with aquaponics where fish eat food like we might, create ammonia(a TOXIN), which is beneficial to a bacteria which create nitrites(a toxin) which is beneficial to another bacteria which creates nitrates, that aren't very nutritious, which is beneficial to the plants.

Nice to know about elk though. I'll have to look at them. Cows are known to go to a lot of trouble, and have complex stomachs to extract what they do.

Um....guys - that's all fine and good, but explain that to a three year old.

Gotta watch out for bobby pins, too. One fell on the floor in our house and I found it before mommy (when I was 15 months old). I rammed it through my right ear. Half deaf since, and the inner ear leaks now and again and disrupts my balance (a LOT of fun when on a mountain).

Take that idea of your kid's real serious TB - and watch what kids do with the little things they have in their hands......they need to know that they don't belong inside of ears, noses, and mouths.

In trying to explain the concept to him, I used the analogy of cooking. I said, "Nature processes things that people can't eat, sort of like cooking it. Cows eat grass. People can't eat grass, but can drink cow milk."

He nodded knowingly and I felt victorious that my explanation worked and he finally got it! He then said, "People drink raw grass juice at the smoothie shop."

I once heard a kid describing why he ate paper....

He said it "wipes him on the way out."
