Must be a Michigan thing. They salt the entire road here.

Do they do that the entire season? Is it possible the salt supply is running low?

Yep, l understand how snow would suck, the worst we get here is a frost!

But after a week of hot 30 c plus days l am ready for some colder days.

Everytime Im in that area in the winter time, walking outdoors is like "Why would anyone ever want to live on this God forbidden ice ball?", but it sure is nice to cozy up inside with loved ones and watch the snowfall outside the windows.

In late November and throughout December, I couldn't agree more.

But come mid March...It is waaaay old! LOL!

It's always beautiful when you don't have to drive in it, but again, by mid March it is annoying as heck!!

Warning! I just put on my tinfoil hat in honor of a conspiracy theory.

I don't think that they truly care about the environment at all. That salt also destroys miles and miles of roadways with potholes so bad, that even radio stations have pothole alerts where other drivers call in and report nasty ones to warn other drivers.

So every spring all of these roads need to be repaired and I often think that the road construction crews and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) have a deal going on somewhere like kickbacks involving greenbacks or something.

They have a saying around here that goes something like this: Michigan has two seasons. Winter and Construction. :rolleyes:

1. FACT! They cut back on spending for areas with the supposed sequester.
2. FACT! The sequester does NOT reduce their budget, and is actually an INCREASE!
3. FACT! They do *******NOT******* want their budget cut!
4. FACT! It is supposed to be reduced NEXT YEAR if their expenses are cut!
5. FACT! Departments, INCLUDING in government, tend to WASTE money to raise expenses so they get a larger budget!
6. FACT! THIS has the hallmarks of such waste as in #5

  I think that's one of the many justifications these road depts come up with when questioned about their practices.
  
  Think about it - they lay down acres of concrete across the country - and then say the SALT might hurt the environment?
  
  Maybe it's a way to justify overtime - "oh, we didn't know the roads were slick, too - we only did the intersections...guess we need to do it again"

One thing you immediately notice down south is that the roads are nicer, and so are the older cars.

Yeah, if the salt isn't hydrophilic enough, or doesn't lower the freezing point enough, the water may refreeze inside of cement, and crack it. That probably won't happen on asphalt though.

In SOME places, like the black forest in germany, they DO retrict salt for JUST THAT REASON! But if you are going to salt it ANYWAY.....

No, not the entire season and no I don't think it is because they are low on salt.

See, after they had all the intersections salted, they went back and salted all of the roads later which means they wasted gas too! :rolleyes:

It was bad. Whole portions of freeways were shut down due to spin outs and mult-icar accidents. Of course if they hadn't wasted time running around and salting intersections first, they could have salted the freeways where there are no freakin' intersections!

In Ohio they started using beat juice a couple of years ago. It's cheaper, environmentally friendly,much easier to store, and more readily available.

But, when they were using salt, it used to drive me crazy to being behind a fully loaded salt truck who was not spreading any salt!

That's what the state uses here in NY also.

Tara they do the intersections first because they are the the most dangerous in the conditions you described.
If they salted the roads to them they would run out of salt before they got many intersections done.
With that said, they either should have or did have other salt trucks doing the roads starting with the main roads and working down to the secondary.
The bigger question is why are you out driving when the roads are that bad?

Oh, well, do you remember how ecstatic I was when my daughter and son-in-law from Minnesota found good jobs in their career fields here and were able to move back home?

They needed help with the care of my two grandbabies to be able to have those jobs, so I became their nanny. So I drive just shy of 30 miles to their house every morning during the week. I have been since mid December.

I think it may be getting close to the time where I'll have to tell them to start checking out good day care centers though.

If you never went out when the roads were bad, you would be inside 4 months out the year in Michigan. One thing that also amazes me in the south, is how it freaks everyone out an schools are closed when there is an eighth of an inch of snow lol.

Of course there are also mountains so that makes it more difficult for a large part of the population.

Im getting ready to move out to a lakehouse on lake maxinkuckee for year to do some liquidation projects in that area... Its nice being single and free (And being able to work from anywhere lol)... probably will move in within the next couple of weeks, glad I waited til spring.

My work here is done... have been staying near family for personal reasons the last few months...

But the funny thing is, soon enough, it will be summer with hot and humid conditions and some here (not me) will be complaining of that. (I live for fun in the sun and love to swim, water ski and love boating in general.) I eagerly await its arrival.

Anyway, the cold, ice, snow and road conditions will be long gone or perhaps just a fleeting thought. People will have forgotten it and some weirdos will even long for it.

Such is the life here in Michigan, lol!

Annie wins the ribbon, Terra. Salt can devastate the ecosystems if there is enough of it spread around. It gets majorly icy out here in Central OR and we feel lucky when they spread sand even in the intersections. I don't think I've ever seen salt used at all out here. Now, it would seem in high desert region you would not run out of SAND? Yet when sanding occurs at all out here it's intersections and some of the more dangerous curves or hills only. I've seen one exception - and that is at the Brasada ranch - they sand all the road for about a mile or two south of the ranch and north until the road straightens out so their tourism base (their money) isn't cut off in cold weather. People wouldn't travel that road otherwise when the weather gets bad. It's a doozy.

I'm excited to see spring coming out here, too. Went to my favorite rock hunting site about 3 weeks ago and it was snowed - and where it wasn't, it was soup. It gets dead hot here in summer - but we don't have that sauna effect you get back there, Terra. That was one of the reasons I fell in love with the west.

John - glue? Really. Any self-respecting successful marketer can afford to pass quality drugs around to their friends. I suppose you also give them Boonesfarm or Mad Dog to drink as well? Tsk.

I agree the salt is very harmful to the environment, however I don't think it is the reason they did only the intersections as they did later salt all of the roads. Albeit too little too late, as all of the roads were riddled with wrecks before they got around to it.

If they still had the salt to spread, it's an environmental issue that they don't do it. I've lived in places they don't do anything to the roads because the budget for it has been embezzled so they run out before they even really use anything on the road.

If there are a huge amount of wrecks, they're going to be forced to use some - it's a toss up between environment and idiot control at that point. If there are people that are hitting things when there is ice on the road - they need to be taught how to drive on ice or stay off the road, ya think? We had ice when I lived there, too - but we didn't have people piled up in wrecks over it.

The worst I have seen was when I first moved to Boise - we had a snow that turned to ice under wheels - 280 accidents in ONE day. People were just literally too drooling stupid to understand slow down and put room between cars. Serious. I had a guy that was tailgating me on the way home and I sped up just a tad a few times so he could see that my backend would start sliding when I did. He STILL stayed right on my tail trying to push me to go faster. I finally found a place I could pull over and he drove by me honking and flashing me the bird out his window - screaming about "stupid woman". Several miles down the road he was in a ditch. I drove by honking and yelled out the window about stupid men - hormonal driving. LOL.

I get the willies in bad road conditions because of a study I read that said 8 out of 10 drivers are on pharmaceutical drugs that are not safe to drive on. After seeing what was going on in Boise traffic that day, I fully believe that when the weather is hardcore, the safest thing is to take back roads where there isn't any traffic and risking the walk out if I ditch it.

Absolutely true!

I myself made it just shy of 30 miles with no incident. I was smart enough to leave extra early giving myself ample time to drive a safe mile per hour due to conditions. You'd think that living in Michigan people would understand that concept, :rolleyes: lol!

Terra after 20+ years of plowing, I've noticed that people forget how to drive in snow and on icy roads as soon as it snows

People also seem to think that having 4wd means you always have traction:rolleyes:
Sal it's unlikely they are using straight sand on the roads out there. Normally when they say sand it's an 80/20 mix of sand and salt. Straight sand will give you some traction but it also insulates the ice on the road, keeping it from melting.
Straight salt stops working around 19F. So a sand salt mix will give you traction but still melt the ice as it warms up.

it was 40 last night and 87 this afternoon.

So you need thermals AND sunscreen

I know I know, 40 is warm ... sort of, I am pretty sure my bananas are done for this season
to much cold AND i know for a fact my strawberries are done for. They blossomed last week
and today all of the flowers are yellow or have fallen off

Don't think I haven't thought about it!

My in-laws live in Florida and I do love visiting them any time of the year!

The problem is that all of my grandchildren live here and I can't afford to move us all, lol!

I'm sorry about your strawberries, though.

We had a similar problem with our peaches last year. It actually hit the 80s here last March and there were tons of blossoms on them but the temps dropped down to the upper 20s in April!

Our two peach trees that yielded over 100 peaches the year before yielded just one peach last year.

Well, obviously just one of the trees, lol!

I know!

Some of those same people turn around and sue counties for for damages to their vehicles from potholes on the roads that the salt laid down caused, in trying to protect them from the slick roads. What's worse? Many of them win the lawsuit!!

In addition to the reasons others have said, cost is also a factor. If an average city spends $100,000* a year on road salt, and they're only doing intersections, imagine how much more it would cost to do all the roads.

Also, I know others mentioned the environmental factor. Much of the concern there is how much chloride gets into the water systems. Even with carefully metered usage, the amount of chloride in the water systems tend to keep rising.

*I don't know how close that number is to being accurate, it was used to illustrate the point. Wisconsin spends about $40 million on road salt and snow removal in an average year, but they didn't break it down to how much went for road salt.

Basically you make a brine out of beet juice and salt. You can then spray it before a storm and it will prevent icing. Naturally you can use it after a storm also.
Besides from being environmentally friendly it works in much colder temps. then regular road salt.

Oh! I wonder if it is the liquid brine they have used occasionally here too. It stinks and is brown in color if that gives you a clue, lol!

But they use straight salt more often.

That's probably it

It depends here on the road as to weather it's salt or sand/salt.
Most major roads get straight salt but many of the lessor traveled roads will get a sand/salt mix.

They need to quit making cars that have so little clearance that they can barely get over a speed bump. They wouldn't be scraping all the snow cover that is needed for traction off the roads if people had enough clearance to drive in a few inches of it. It infuriates me to be driving down a perfectly decent road and see a plow come through and bare it right down to ice, making it a skating rink.

I feel your pain. Maybe felt your pain. While I was
living in Michigan this was the point at which I would
really get tired of Winter. Not too late to move to
Florida. There are a lot of 'snow birds' down here
this time of year.
