Miss California was cheated

I've been watching this unfold in the news the last couple days. For those that dont know, the miss usa contest just happened and Miss California was asked her opinion of gay marriage by perez hilton (on of the judges, openly gay). She stated that for her, because of her family, upbringing and religion that marriage was meant to be between a man and a woman (paraphrasing, but thats the general gist)

She didnt say gay marriage was bad...she gave her opinion on gay marriage like she was asked.

Now hollywood is beating this girl down because she spoke her mind and its not what the gay population of the country wants to hear.

I think thats a crock. She's allowed to have her opinion, just as the gay community is allowed to have their and i think its a complete steaming pile of b.s. that she likely lost the crown because of an honest answer.

    Hi Michael,

I've been watching that too. What struck my interest is I noticed that was a no win question. She either would have pissed off the conservatives, or she pissed off the liberals.

The only winning move would have been not to answer the question directly, but I doubt she has had any training or practice answering the question like a politician, under that kind of pressure on live t.v. being viewed by millions.

I don't think she was cheated - think the media created the story and she participated.

The first half of her answer was incoherent - after stumbling she said something about "in my country, it's allowed" and stumbled some more before finally giving her view.

I do think the question was ridiculous in its political correctness - but then I've never understood why it matters who marries whom. It doesn't affect me one way or another and don't feel I have a right to tell anyone else how to live. I have enough trouble just keeping my own life on track

I totally agree with you Kay Ken. This is the media which creates such spicy stories for their own benefit.

I think she was cheated as well. She provided her opinion and was hammered by it. She's received a lot of negative publicity from it. Her not accepting gay marriage is not as bad as the gay community FORCING her to accept gay marriage. She's being hammered for living with her beliefs yet people get offended when the gay community forces us to accept them. We have a right to support whatever we want, we shouldn't be forced to accept something we don't believe in. Was she cheated because she voiced her opinion as asked, in my opinion, yes.

Terrible question and who cares about hollywood? They suck. Just because they are famous they think their opinions are worth more than anyone else's. No, so wrong. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Too bad she was treated so bad for being honest. Was definitely a no win question. Who let that Perez on the panel anyway.

Why cares about hollywood? Ask the million+ people that are following ashton kutcher on twitter where most of these people are posting their opinions about her.

and having perez hilton as the judge of a miss america contest is like having a vegetarian judging a chili contest in texas

And that's why the question should not have been asked. Her statement was her opinion - but was an opinion about what others should be allowed to do (or not to do, in this case). It was guaranteed to antagonize one group or another.

What I think is wrong is the media focus on the answer as THE reason she was not chosen - it may have been....but may not have been. They don't know - but it's a good story that people can argue about. It's also disrespectful of the woman who did win.

I think Kay hit it on the head when she said Miss California's answer was incoherent.
It was a typical blonde bimbo answer, which ,in my opinion, is why she is getting knocked, deservedly so, all over the place.
I must say I don't have a clue who won,as I don't pay attention to this kind of drivel, but her answer was all over the news.

While I certainly won't pass judgement on her for stating her beliefs but there are tons of different ways that she could've answered that question without pissing off anyone who is gblt. Say something about how it's up to how the people vote (hello - CA voted no on Prop 8?!) etc.

What happened to freedom of speech???

Ms. California answered the question exactly as I would have. I have nothing against gays. It's not my place to judge, but I was brought up with the idea that a man should marry a woman. And men, (very hunky, tall, sexy men, I might add, is my preference :-) What's wrong with that? I have a best friend who's openly gay and I respect her for who she is.

I can see if her answer was degrading in anyway. But, to me... it wasn't. In fact, I thought it was very respectful to those who weren't brought up with her same values.

Why is this even an issue? Because Perez Hilton says so? Who made him King of Sheba?

Oh well, I guess you can't please everyone and neither should you want to. Ms. California is going to get waaaaayyyy more publicity than the lady who won anyway.

kudos. I think she has a lot of courage to stand for what she believes and to speak openly. I hope she stays with her convictions and doesn't cave in to having to make a public "apology".

    It's stupid.

Instead of some correct, rehearsed answer.. she gave an honest opinion.. and she gets shit about it.

Yea, it's really unfortunate what happened to her... and now she's basically being demonized by many in Hollywood. And who is this Perez guy, anyway? I guess after the show he immediately blogged how he gave her zero points because she was a stupid b****... Trump should apologize for this creep and make sure he never works in his pageant again.

How is this question any different from others where judges give candidates less points because they don't like the answers? It's not like there is a right or wrong answer. They know the rules: Judges give points based on opinion. One or more judges didn't like her answer. End of story.

Not seeing what the big deal is.

She obviously made a mistake in judgement. It's not necessarily what her personal beliefs are, but how she demonstrates tact or lack thereof. Like it or hate it, unless you want to always face firestorms, there is a time and place to state your personal beliefs and a time and place to circumvent such questions.

    Thunderbird,

I GUARANTEE that Perez would NOT have accepted NO answer! She had to LIE, or tell the truth! She told the truth in about as tactful a way as anyone could. GRANTED, I am not tactful HERE, but I know it when I see it, etc... If asked TO MY FACE, I will generally try to almost IMPLY I agree with them without doing so. Sometimes I actually let it drop, or redirect things. Of course, on a subject like this, I wouldn't dare to be so unclear. And Perez would either not accept such an answer, or judge it "his" own way.

HECK, one of my favorite anecdotes(TRUE STORY) is how I told a group that the medical industry was STUPID for claiming they would have a cure for AIDS in 5 years! I told them it would probably take over 20 years before they got close. a guy came beside me an asked if I was a doctor. His voice made it CLEAR he was homosexual! I thought OH BOY! I said "NO, but..." and listed all the FACTS! HE did something AMAZING!

    1. He said HE had AIDS!
    2. He said that he was AMAZED that I was so dead on correct.
    3. He and I were friendly towards one another, like straight friends, not to imply anything else.

He later told me of a "cure". I told him that EVEN if the theory were right, and worked 100%, the disease would stay in the nervous system, etc... couldn't be removed, and would just continue. I was right. He eventually died of AIDS. Here it is almost 30 years later and NO CURE! The IDIOT that should have been THROWN IN JAIL for essentially a pump and dump scam, eventually DID recant and say it would be DECADES before anyone would find a cure. DUH!

But HEY, I wasn't tactful, and a number of people, INCLUDING ONE DYING OF AIDS, liked me more for it.

Yeah it is funny. Some groups just have distinctive voices, even if it isn't all of them.

Of course you hear of people like John Travolta...now suing some organization for saying HE is homosexual, and you never know. Although he did some things most straight guys wouldn't be caught dead doing, like "hairspray", I never figured he was homosexual, and wouldn't believe it simply because someone said so.

BTW the guy I spoke about earlier DID say he was homosexual. And he was stereotypically so! I would have guessed it was likely just looking at him.

          Wow!

          You're actually being 100% serious aren't you?

You can't tell if somebody is homosexual just by their voice. Not only that, what difference would it make if you could?

              Fair enough.

The fact is that you can sometimes make assumptions by the voice.

However, what about people who don't talk in the stereotypical "homosexual" voice? Those who sound like "everybody else" could just as easily be gay.

So, I stick to the idea that you can't tell someone's sexual orientation by their voice, though you can have your stereotype alarm triggered in some cases.

              All the best,

I NEVER claimed that ALL homosexuals sounded that way. That would be DUMB! Of course they don't. Gee, I even tried to imply that with my statements about travolta. I couldn't say if he were homosexual or not. I simply won't just take someone's baseless claim as stating he is. BTW about hatred. I may not like travolta's politics. I don't know enough to say. I may not like his "religion", if you want to call it that. But he SEEMS like a nice guy, and I like most of the shows I have seen from him. If he WERE gay, none of that would change. And I told you about the person I met. He and I got along fine.

See, that's the thing. How do you know for sure?

Have you asked 100% of the people you heard talking in the way you describe?

I think you're right if you're saying that a certain voice can make you wonder, but without asking directly, you can't know for sure; you are only making assumptions.

Sometimes they were already out, or they said something that indicated they were, etc...
So effectively, I DID ask 100%. OK, there were a FEW now that I think about it, that sounded "homosexual" but SUPPOSEDLY weren't. They all PLAYED homosexuals, like one of the guys on "will and grace". It might have been "brothers", but I believe it was WAG(funny akronym!). His wife SWEARS he is not homosexual. I'll state my take on it. Unifying through common hatred of a group, for whatever reasons whether real or imagined (probably mostly imagined), has been effective in the past. It is taking place now. Many people do things that others may find vile such as smoking or eating shrimp, and some may favor discrimination on such grounds.

I shouldn't be speaking for Steve, and am not trying to,but it seemed he was just making a statement that in that peticular instance he was able to tell, and that in fact the speaker confirmed it.

I used to work for a couple of guys in the 70s that I didn't realize they were gay till after I had worked for them for quite a while. Of course, I was pretty naive back then, but they did not exhibit the stereotypical indicators.

Yeah, I have known some homosexuals that acted, looked, and sounded normal ALSO. Every now and then someone comes out and I think WOW, I never would have guessed.
There IS a reason why so many make crazy claims, extort, etc... and that is because in many cases you CAN'T tell. My assertion was simply that sometimes you CAN!

The only question for me was what idiot included Perez Hilton as an expert on women in the first place....

You have THAT right! A HOMOSEXUAL trying to do this? A WOMAN would probably have been better. Heck, why not a 6year old!?!?!? It would make more sense!

I saw a show, house bunny, yesterday. The woman LUCKED OUT that she could pull it off in SPITE of her ignorance. SHE thought she was an expert in males! Luckily, the movie was fairly realistic in that it showed SHE had something to learn there ALSO!

So, why do you guys think a male homosexual shouldn't be a judge for a beauty pageant? Because they are attracted to men? If so, then women shouldn't be judges either.

Well, it is almost like fishermen. The STRAIGHT men are like fish, and they KNOW what they like. The STRAIGHT women are like fishermen that know what bait works, at least for them.

HOMOSEXUAL men may see the pole and get a nice shiny one, etc... They may put sparkling bait down in the water. They aren't even trying to catch the same fish.

Look at the dodah parade, "clothing designers", etc... and you'll see what I am getting at. HECK, they made jokes about that kind of stuff on I love lucy! A recent disney show poked fun at it!

Wow. That's a great parable. Unfortunately it doesn't make any sense at all. I mean, what does the doo dah parade have to do with this?

How about trying a straight forward answer? Why shouldn't gays be judges at beauty pageants?

I know you're not asking me, Tim, but I'll add my two cents.

As long as there are, in essence, objective criteria then anybody should be able to judge such a pageant. Sure, there is always a high level of subjectivity in such contests, but within the confines of the objective criteria.

So, assuming a person is capable of thought, then they should be allowed to judge. As far as Perez Hilton goes, he should NOT have been a judge. Not because of his sexual orientation, but because of his lack of mental capacity.

                  All the best,
                  Michael

While I believe everyone should be able to be 'free' and do whatever they want unless it hurts somebody else (literally), I am sick and tired of these fascists persecuting people who do not happen to agree with them.

I am sick of 'special interest' groups shoving things down our throats and FORCING us to accept their ideas.

Right now they are holding up legislation that is badly needed by the MAJORITY OF CITIZENS to pander to the fascist special interest groups - even including those not even citizens of this country that are here illegally -

This girl was set up sure as rain. Yeh so funny a misogynist judging a woman's beauty contest. What a lark.

I understand persecution, hate crimes etc are not fair, but nobody can FORCE anybody to think they way they do and they are effectively taking away OUR rights to speak freely about what WE believe without being persecuted.

    Go figure.

Yeah, it is supposed to be talent, looks, and hopefully some intelligence, NOT politics or sex. And there IS a MORALS clause generally, so they shouldn't even be ASKED such a question. It is technically a breach of contract. HECK, if they pose nude, or in some way questionably they can be, and HAVE BEEN, STRIPPED of ANY prize.

      Hi Kim,

Some spammer was resurrecting old threads that were related to certain topics. Their sig was very blatant "keyword" oriented. That post has since disappeared, but the conversation continues.

Michael has a good point. Perez CLEARLY had an agenda that BREACHED standard contract policies, and thought that was germain. That ALONE ****PROVES**** he was INCAPABLE of being a proper judge. GIVE ME A BREAK!

Yes that was an absolutely antagonistic and unfair question to ask - not to mention how the honest answer was received.

    It's called a railroad job -

It wouldn't matter woman, man, manette, whatever - it was blatantly unfair.

    period.

p.s. i have had many close gay male friends over the years and still really like them and want them to have whatever they want. queens are a different story and this perez is one of those (a viscious he-she) - i bet gay guys hate him/it.
