I'm a big superhero fan. The previews of The Man of Steel look amazing (at least to me). Anyone else excited?

Here's the latest preview;

Is that the one where it's the skinny English guy playing Superman? I seem to recall seeing a promo or something a few weeks back and being distinctly under-whelmed by a skinny superhero.

Of course I could be completely wrong and thinking of another movie. It happens

If they could just find one guy to be Superman, or Batman, or Spiderman it'd be great.
Kind of like Sean Connery IS James Bond.
Start a series from the beginning and have the same actor play it through.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

lol. I've been Batman pretty regularly, doing events for kids and stuff and just having some fun. One random afternoon I took a cardboard sign and wrote "Need gas money for Batmobile" and just stood at an intersection holding it like a homeless guy. Good times.

Here's one of the pics of me from a Halloween party at the studio where my office used to be:

I had a chance to buy one of the original Superman costumes from the 1950's TV show starring George Reeves. It was up to $3,000. The last day of the bidding, my wife asked me the wrong question. She said "What would you do with it?"

I thought about putting it on a mannequin, but my in laws would freak out (and pretty much most adults). I thought about just putting it in a drawer, but then what would be the point? So I didn't buy it.

The entrance to my library has a fake bronze sign that says "Fortress Of Solitude".

Dan Kennedy is another big comic book nerd. I met a very talented comic book artist at the Warrior event too. Very fun guy to talk to.

Have you ever read Gladiator by Philip Wylie? It tells a story of a man with Superman-like strength, and what that would really be like...and how people would react.

Anyway, you look better in the Batman than I would.

Haha ... that's about what I paid for the Batman suit, and exactly what I did with it. This is in the game room:

I'm also about 40% done with my Tumbler replica - yes, one that runs and drives. Building it based on a Sterling kit (no doors, entirely hydraulic top) with a Ford Bronco drivetrain... basically moved the 351 Windsor to the rear, drive shaft is like 3" long. One of those projects that when I looked at it I thought "I could probably do this for about $15k" and now $30k later it's still not done, but it will be worth it when it is. Yeah, I'm that nerd.

Haven't read it but it sounds like something I would like. And thanks on the Batman suit, the timing was perfect - I used to be a big guy, about 260 lbs with a 42" waist. Took a long time to slim down to a 32, and I came across the opportunity to grab that suit and it happened to fit perfectly. The main thing now is I just like messing with people and doing fun stuff for kids (I have 3 of my own). A couple buddies have talked about doing a video series about aging Superheros where they're all middle-aged and retired, except Batman still thinks he's relevant. Would be fun if they could ever get it off the ground.

Anyway, didn't mean to derail your thread, I'm actually pretty excited about the Superman movie as well. I thought the last one was kind of a dud, in spite of Kevin Spacey being a great Lex Luthor. A reboot is definitely in order and the casting looks great for this one. If it's anything like the Batman Begins "grounded" approach (still my favorite of the three) it's going to be excellent.

Have you read Return Of The Dark Knight? It's a graphic novel that pretty much has the same scenario. Batman is retired, and comes back in his mid fifties...one last time. I think you would like it.

Do you know who Doc Savage is? I have a huge collection of the novels, and a few framed art prints.

I read in a comic once (I don't remember who said it) "Batman is always the most dangerous man in the room, even when Superman is in the room".

This is a side I very rarely talk about. Almost nobody I know shares this fascination with Heroes.

I think I caught an animated version of the Dark Knight Returns on Netflix, but the kids interrupted and I couldn't watch the whole thing. My son just turned 9, he's finally starting to "get" the whole Batman thing and get into it so I want him to follow in a more logical order.

Doc Savage... I kind of want to say he was part of the inspiration behind Indiana Jones, wasn't he? Or am I way off base.

Not off base at all. Also, lots of the Superman mythos was taken from Doc Savage.

              Man of Bronze..Man of Steel
Both had an arctic Fortress Of Solitude
Both had the first name Clark (after Clark Gable)

Yeah, Savage was an explorer, crime fighter, inventor, monster hunter...type of guy.

Anyway....Ahem! How about them Yankees? Huh? Manly talk.....

Yankees? I thought you wanted to talk about something manly?

There's nothing to be ashamed about when discussing Super Heroes. The Greeks and Romans had their Gods and Legends. Super Heroes are nothing more than our legends.

Now, it's highly unlikely such discourse will get you laid, but neither will talking about your fantasy football team, which men won't shut up about (myself included).

I got a little lucking in this capacity. My wife is fascinated with my utterly useless compendium of Marvel knowledge. It blew her mind when she found out I have entire universe of my own in my head, but that's a story for another day.

Arrrrggggg, yep, looks good, but a remake, with an alien, Roman type feel????

The original motion picture may not have the sound barrier effects, etc, but l still prefer those ones!

I will probably still go and see it, thought, anything with Lex Luther in it has to be worth watching.

Not the group I knew, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone else did. Having my office at the studio for the last two years allowed me to meet a lot of independent film producers, students, and generally interesting people. Had a lot of fun there.

OK, you win the Batman contest.

      This is a real question.

Did you ever think about going out in a costume and being a real life superhero?
I don't mean entertaining kids at parties, I mean taking it seriously.

I know how that question sounds, but I really want to know.

        All. The. Time. lol.

If actual technology matched "Batman technology" and was within the budget I probably would. The bulletproof armor would be essential - aside from bullets, it makes it a lot easier to take a punch.

I've always been fascinated by the idea though. And the gadgets. This pic might inspire you:

I've been building cars since I was 19, started doing classic Corvettes and then Jeeps (to make them more offroad capable like my 2010 above) - what you don't see in that pic is all of the armor. Roll cage, full body skids, etc. Having a functional tumbler was something I started in 2011 and, though it's nowhere NEAR finished, I'm confident it will be one day. Mostly just haven't had the time.

The "gadgets" have always been interesting too. I've been trying to figure out a way to make a smaller powered rope ascender, everything that's on the market now is a huge backpack-like thing that would never work, and the one that shows the most promise (Atlas) is for military use only.

Have you ever seen this photo circulating the net?

Funny story ... I was the person they were responding to in this letter, and the one who took the photo. Infusion owns this power tool line, circular saws with two blades that rotate in opposite directions. When I heard they were working on a cordless one with brushless motors, my first thought was "What if it had a spool". Wouldn't solve the challenge of shooting out the line, but if I could reel it in it's a start.

But yeah, I have to admit, the idea is appealing if it was within the realm of possibility. When you get down to it, Batman's only super power is money... the rest is just motivation. That's part of what makes him so appealing among all of the superheroes. Batman was always the one that someone could actually be.

The closest I've ever been was to walk in to the local PD suited up and ask if they needed any help fighting crime. Made for a great photo op, but they weren't interested in any assistance. lol.

Made for a great photo op, but they weren't interested in any assistance. lol.
Wow. I am genuinely impressed...more than any sane person would be!

Ok, now is the moment I destroy my image.

Batman is your Meme. Daredevil was mine.

I spent almost a year trying to design and built a billy club that would shoot out a cable. The closest I got was one that had a steel cable attached to it, but I had to manually rewind it. And this wasn't when I was 12 years old. I was about 20 or so. I made several grappling hooks...all that wouldn't hold my weight. And my billy club cable was strong steel cable, but I couldn't get it to hook onto anything to save my life.

I started Kung Fu training, serious training. No kids in the class...only tears and pain. But I started with the idea of being a costumed crimefighter. I was 18.

I know, I know....but that was my goal. It's something I never told anyone until a few years ago.

          Of course there are incredible flaws in that plan;
Crimes never happen when you want them to...or where you happen to be at the time.
The odds are very great that I would be killed the first time someone had a gun.
The odds are even greater that I would be arrested.
And...unless you kill someone, you can't stop them from committing crimes. You can't arrest them, beating them will only get you arrested.

Even though, in my 20's I was in incredible shape....any five guys could beat me. or any two with knives...or any one with a gun. Now, it's anyone who doesn't smoke.

Anyway, I got real proficient at throwing knives. (The closest thing I could get at the time to a weapon)

          You may enjoy this;

The thing that cured me of my secret obsession happened when I was about 22 years old. Three guys picked a fight with me because they thought I said something to one of them. I dropped them all in about a second. The third one was more scared than hurt. But the first one was unconscious, and I was afraid I killed him.

I told my Kung Fu instructor what happened and he came within a hair of beating me to a pulp. My wife and her two children were in the car waiting for me at the time, within sight of the incident. My instructor told me that I endangered their lives because I wanted to show how macho I was. He was right. It was incredibly stupid...and had I been caught, I would have served time.

Have you ever hit someone, trying to hurt them? That's the only time I ever did. It was a sickening feeling. One I didn't want to experience again.

It was only after that that I thought about all the bad things that would happen if I really went looking for trouble.

But, right after watching the movie Watchmen at the theater, with my wife (bless her for tagging along)... I told her about my early fantasy/plan/obsession. She asked if I was serious.

I told her not anymore, but I got pretty close when I was young.

I didn't have the nerve to go out and make a fool of myself, and get myself killed. I didn't want to be the first one.

But I told her that if there was ever someone like that anywhere in the country, in the 1970's, that put on a mask, and fought crime like Batman (or in the movie Nite Owl)... that I think I would have been the second one.

And here I am..being a jerk to people with crazy ideas. Getting paid for my advice....

And I was going to get myself killed, just because I think it would have been fun......except the last few minutes.

Oh, and I recently priced out a titanium shield, fabricated to look like Captain America's shield (Don't ask, residual madness). It was a tad over $5,000...so I decided not to. But it would have been soooo cool hanging on my wall.

          This was just last year.

I don't mean entertaining kids at parties, I mean taking it seriously.

I know how that question sounds, but I really want to know.

Yup, saw it, and read the comic series it was based on. The comics are a little better...but I loved the movie too. There was a sequel called Hit-Girl (in the comics) and of course, Kick-Ass 2 is coming out soon. The comic series for Kick-Ass 2, I've already read. The comics are far more violent than the movies. These aren't movies I'd take young kids to see.

By the way, in real life there are "Real Life Superheroes". I saw a special on them on TV. Mostly young people that wear costumes and feed the homeless and do food drives....stuff like that.

But a few are deranged and sad. I can't think of an instance where one actually stopped a major crime. Mostly, they call the police. Most of them are harmless eccentric people who have a fantasy.

It depends on how old you were. Seven? No. 19? I think so. Please tell me more about it.

But I really want to hear Ron's story.

Claude, that is an awesome story

Outside of light martial arts and fencing growing up I never really had any "serious" training, but I'm with you, the idea was always appealing to me. I used to free climb when I lived up north so I was all upper body strength back then... then somewhere between 23 and 28 I gained about 100 lbs and it wasn't until 2009 that I got serious about losing the weight and getting back into shape. I blame my wife. Each time she was pregnant (we have 3 ages 5, 7, and 9) we gained the weight together. Trouble was, each time she had the kid she lost the weight and went right back to being the same size she was in high school. I didn't. Ugh...

You know what's funny though... when The Dark Knight Rises came out in theaters last year, I was originally going to go to the movie in costume. Rescheduled to go the next day, and then the Aurora shooting happened and I decided it would be a bad idea. But in my head, I always wondered ... what if I had been in Aurora and could have stopped that guy. As Batman. And then, just left without ever revealing who I was. Aside from the whole saving lives and stuff, what would that have felt like? In reality, I probably would have been the first one that crack pot took out before anyone knew what was coming, but it was right after that I started doing the charity stuff. I figured since I couldn't really be a superhero, at least maybe I could make some kid's day and have some fun along the way. When the car is done I want to get involved with Make-A-Wish, you know there is some kid out there who would love to cruise around the city with Batman for a couple hours, maybe stage a non-violent crime like a purse-snatching or something and stop it. It's not an original idea, saw a video on YouTube once, but it would still be cool to do. Plus, it's a great excuse to suit up and drive around town in the tumbler, so that's a bonus.

I love the "Make-a-wish" idea. Probably the only intelligent outlet for these impulses.

The Aurora thing? Yeah, you would probably have been shot. After all, that moron thought of himself as the Joker.

And I never thought of that scenario until you brought it up.....But I can tell you how I would have felt. It would have become a defining moment in my life. And I'm sure for you too.

And when I got older I saw that we had real superheroes. People running into burning buildings to save perfect strangers. Guys jumping into freezing rivers to save drowning victims....

Some perfectly ordinary people...a very few....have greatness in them.
Most never know it's there. But then there is a need....and it comes out.

Knowing that I am capable of heroic selfless acts....would be the greatest reward I could imagine. I don't know that yet. But it's a dream.
