I am an proponent of aggressive, legal tax avoidance!!!

If Google, or anyone else is breaking the law, that is an issue that should be addressed.

If there are legal ways to avoid or reduce taxes, I'm all for it.

However... I think the real problem is pointed out here,

Corporate tax avoidance has become a major issue in Britain, where there are concerns over rising government debt

From a legal perspective, there is a difference between tax minimisation and tax avoidance.

Minimisation is legal and everybody does (or at least should do) it.

Tax avoidance, however, is a crime with severe penalties.

          Definition of 'Tax Avoidance'
The use of legal methods to modify an individual's financial situation in order to lower the amount of income tax owed. This is generally accomplished by claiming the permissible deductions and credits. This practice differs from tax evasion, which is illegal.
Perhaps you are thinking of tax evasion.

I think we were in agreement actually, just a matter of verbiage.

One of the main reasons that I am against tax evasion is the high potential of becoming a guest of the federal government for an extended period of time.

Listening to this being debated on the radio, it seems that the government admits that Google, eBay, Starbucks etc are not breaking the law and are paying the correct amount of tax that they are obliged to, however they still want them to pay more. This apparently makes them "evil".

A strong word choice from a woman who refused to investigate child abuse in her constituency and claimed that the victims were mentally disturbed. Reading her wiki page it seems that Mrs Hodge's own family company is paying a very small amount of tax despite making millions in profits...

What makes that UK story sad is I know I read about the Bermuda money funnel years ago, probably somewhere around 6-7 years ago. So what The H are they smoking, like they didn't already know about how Google funnels money from one country to the next.

I'm a proponent of abolishing the IRS, kicking World Bank out of our country, and restoring free enterprise. If they want to spend OUR money make them ask for money for a cause and let us vote whether we'll support it. I don't approve of the present extortion going on in any way shape or form. Google isn't going to get any flack from me on this one........I don't even care......It's not MY books to have to worry about and gov can get money anywhere or time they want - they just have WB print it for them, so every time you feel bled.......you're right. You are being bled. Where there is World bank - there really isn't any law, just obedience.

The overall tax rates, after accounting for all taxes, are absurd. Can't blame Google for looking for methods to reduce what is owed. How did the US survive for 140 years without a federal income tax?

That said, Google is a corrupt company arrogantly believing it is accountable to no one except itself. Google is the most penalized and fined company in the world. I seem to recall receiving some Google payments from Ireland and thinking, yeah right. This is due to a tax scam.

I liked Google' statement that it cannot respond to documents "it has not seen." Hmmm. These are Google documents the whistleblower has.

I personally feel that theft whether by an individual, corporation or government is morally repugnant. I do hope that one day we can mature into a society where we don't have to steal from each other to support it.

    That's my stance on it.
