The phenomena that happened with the Beatles in the 1960s when you couldn't even hear them with all the amplifiers, loudspeakers etc, because of all the girls screaming through every song.

WHY do you suppose they were screaming like that?

Was it just that they were soooooo excited that they were like erupting - they just could not hold it all in??? No other way to get up off of the intensity?

Wow - if somebody could recreate that emotion? With no screaming allowed? Well - we would need an affiliate program. hehehehegh

...and.. What do you suppose is the reason women always scream - (yech) --- and especially in movies, etc. It is like a given that the first thing after every 'shock' or 'event' will be punctuated with some silly woman screaming?

WHY do they scream? At everything scary? What exactly does this do? Is it like the way the martial artists make loud vocal noise when they attack? In reverse?

Wow. It is fun to think about what it was like to hear thousands of girls screaming @ the Beatles! Try to remember the emotion!

{I understand scream if you need somebody to help you emergency style. I understand screeeeem to bust a perp if being attacked - (as this calls attention to your location and they know they can be seen by witnesses). {or to call attention to an assault you are witnessing} (it may scare them off or make them stop)

But like in a tsunami, earthquake or major epic event - WHY DO THEY SCREAM? Who will hear? Who can do anything? Why scream? Maybe it is the same as the 'eruption of Beatle-like emotions' - but again in reverse? Just Sheer Horror?

If you are trying to get out of somewhere real fast amidst total chaos - would you not waste your energy screaming? and use it instead to go into high gear at least mentally? Maybe the screaming helps them get to that place.

I hope I can get some perspective on this in my head from your responses - I would really like to know how others both male and female think about this issue of SCREAMING.

Y?

The Beatles were a new phenomenon, so when girls were actually able to meet these heros of the day, it was beyond believe for a teen to be able to see the hottest personalities of the day in person. There is also the hormonal & sexual aspect to the psychology of emotional release.

When a strong feeling is new, the reaction is raw. I heard a producer from a TV show that had the Beatles on and he said that they liked to have them on last because the studio would smell of urine when they were done singing. The girls were so excited when the band came on stage and had such "Extreme emotions," that many of them would actually lose bladder control and pee right there on the spot. Uncontrolled primitive reactions are very present in some people, but not all people. Woman of past decades were perhaps more inclined to scream out for help and be the weaker sex.

I don't get the screaming thing myself. Cheering for a team, yelling at sports players at a game or watching it on TV seems to be very common. That was a favorite antic of a lovely elderly neighbor woman in the late summer and fall to yet a the football players. She could really yell!

I had a friend from ballet school whose dad had worked the spotlights on the stage when the Beatles performed, keeping them illuminated. She said he told her that these girls actually wanted to come up and touch him because he worked those lights that shone on them.

We just thought it was pretty funny, but apparently the girls were serious and was the only way they could touch the Beatles vicariously, even if once removed.

I honestly don't have a clue in regards to the screaming for the Beatles, but I think screaming when one is truly frightened may be a physical response to the fear. The heart starts pumping fast, adrenaline rushes throughout the whole body and a scream is a release.

I wonder what would happen to a person when they have an extremely high dose of adrenaline running through their body and don't have a release mechanism, hyperventilating, heart attack, stroke?

Hmmm, now I want to know, haha!

Yeah, the scream isn't because of adrenaline. It also wouldn't be much of a release.

I wonder what would happen to a person when they have an extremely high dose of adrenaline running through their body and don't have a release mechanism, hyperventilating, heart attack, stroke?
A stroke would likely be LESS likely. Heart atack would be if they already have problems. Hyperventilating is ALSO not likely.

WOW, and I thought I was ALONE in this! I mean I can understand a scream to scare off, etc..., an attacker, but even THEN! SOMETIMES, they show MALES doing that, and of course many males do similar things with sports. I do NOT understand!!!!!!

But I thought a woman MIGHT understand why woman act like this.

    Gforce,

You are WRONG! It was not, and is not, that hard to see such people. And, even if it were, that STILL doesn't explain it.

HECK, if a woman saw the beatles, loved them, and was alone, wouldn't she want to SHUT UP!?!?!? The beatles would be less intent on leaving, and they could enjoy the time TOGETHER! Maybe she could get a back stage pass or a ticket to a nice show. If she SCREAMS, they want to get away and EVERYONE wonders what is up and crowds around if they are likewise interested or can't see.

How was it easy to see them? They were from Liverpool and aside from stops in California and New York they were not out and about the U.S. very much.
Also, the girls were not ALONE with them, They were part of a large group and wanted to be NOTICED. Generally, backstage passes are not given to underage girls if they are available at all. The screams come from the innocent glee of a young girl's OMG moment. It's raw excitement, some girls are screamers, some are not.

They were in even SMALL venues at times when people screamed. And it was NOT just young girls.

I've been excited about enough things. I have been very scared, happy, etc... I never screamed.

As for babbies? They have little choice. They don't understand how the world is. Luckily, the world is setup for parents to respond to such things.

People do stuff for one simple reason. They see others doing it. I'm amazed at how much volume and intensity a little two or three year old girl can get into a scream. I hear them all the time in the supermarket. Ear-piercing stuff. And most often there is absolutely no danger, no issue at all. They sometimes do it when they see something they like or want. They do it to get attention. They do it when they want to manipulate (or coerce) their parents.

They need to learn it somewhere. They see other little girls do it and notice the results. Maybe mom does it. Maybe a sister does it or a classmate.

Girls screamed at Beatles concerts because it was the thing to do. It's herd behavior plain and simple.

Haven't girls been doing the same thing for Bieber, etc?

I have no idea - have never participated in that kind of hysteria and never understood friends who did.

It ISN'T because they see it, etc... If it were, boys would ALSO do it. Yet, outside of some sports events, nothing comes close.

Thanks, Gang! All very logical and makes sense.

... and babies do scream WHY? other than wet, hungry, tired, because there really is such a thing as GROWING PAINS - my son who rarely cried and never screamed (totally passive Pisces) did have some issues with growing pains and the pediatrician told me about the growing pains being real - bones growing - imagine.

... and yeah - if you want to see the opposite of maternal instincts put me with a screaming baby even on TV - I will change the channel. or ruuuuuun!

Now down to the gutter level - the most obnoxious thing on the Jerry Springer show (and almost every word or action on the show is hideously gross behavior) but the worst is the idiots in the audience

jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry! jerry!
    je-reee! je-reee! je-reee! je-reee! je-reee! je-reee!
makes me want to smack somebody! chaaaaaaaaange the channel QUICK!
as awful as listening to everybody scream at a sports event!

p.s. terra - yeah i see what you are saying about NOT releasing the pressure causing issues - absolutely agree - I never applied to screaming but i know first-hand - what i call 'eating your emotions' - (keeping it all in) is absolutely something that will give you high blood pressure and heart burn! this is why there is a certain level where i have to VENT. and it isn't pretty - according to how long i have been holding it in and how important it is to me the uglier i will be.

i think the best release is LAUGHING and SMILING. Man you just can't help but let your muscle tension go when you really laugh!-

I actually practice smiling - it keeps your face from drooping. One thing I like about my long walk every Sunday - you can practice smiling every time you pass somebody walking the opposite way. (then i do it a few more times after they pass to get in touch with my face) hello face.

    ;o)

I don't get the Beatles screaming either. I think it may have gone back earlier than them though like the Frankie era. Maybe it had something to do with changes in society and women's place during that time, especially as sexual creatures. Women previously were mostly demure and kinda seen, not heard. In the 20th century, women were working on their freedom from oppression and screaming would certainly be the opposite of demure.

Screaming from fear or being startled, cats do that but they seem to scream as a form of intimidation. Makes me wonder are we in fear or are we using something like a cat puffing up its tail, being tough by being loud to the point of pain.

And since we are on the subject, woo girls are my pet peeve. It is usually so fake and contrived. And lots of guys do it too. I really want to slap those idiots.

I've been wondering that same thing for as long as I can remember.

And, they cry at stupid stuff.
Like while they're watching McCartney play.
    Why would that bring tears?

I don't think McCartney himself is enough to move anyone to tears, but perhaps the words he is singing really hits home in the heart, a personal emotional experience in the girl's life. Maybe?

No, all they have to do is watch him.
If you look at the videos they're crying their eyes out and saying his name.

And, they can't hear what he's singing because they're screaming and crying.
