Hey folks,

I was just wondering... HOW BAD is the salary system in your country? I mean whats the average salary for different jobs? My case is pretty horrible to say the least.. Ok, let me start:

0) Minimum wage for full-timer $400
1) Fireman - $500 average
2) Police man $700 average
3) Teacher $800 average
4) Garbageman $1000 average
5) Professor @ university $1500 average
6) Brain surgeon $2500 average
7) Politican $3000 average
etc..

About the prices (so you will get an idea of how bad is the situation)

0,5 Coca - cola = $1,5
1L Milk = $1
1L Gasoline = $2
Meal (random kitchen) = $5
Meal at mid-range restaurant for 2 = $25
Pair of Jeans $65
Fitness club (per month) = $70

etc..

What does it matter what the cost of living is in countries other than your own? Everyone is different so you have no control over it anyway.

WOW! A politician can get $3000/HOUR!?!?!?!? DOUBT IT!

Other periods start to lose any basis for comparison. Even jeans. In the US, they can vary all over the place

It's not per hour lol. It's monthly. Who could ever pay that kind of amount?
      hahaha

Well, Thomas WAS clearer. Yeah, I knew it wasn't hourly. Most dollars aren't TOO far off of the dollar, and that would be a high amount.

I believe that he means weekly but, there are individuals in the U.S. and abroad that do make allot more than $3,000 USD per hour. Mostly all business people, and attorneys though.

Yes you are right. They are business owners. But speaking of average income, that $3000 is very huge amount.

The minimum wage here is €8.65/hour (U.S.$ 11.31/hour).

Everything else you listed have pay scales, so it would depend on that. For example, the salary for a Garda (police officer) here (in Ireland) is anything from €27,100 (U.S.$ 35,430.54) at the bottom of the scale to €185,000 (U.S.$241,869) at the very top.

    As for costs:

    1. Coca-cola: €1.50/330ml can. (c. $1.96).
    2. Milk/ 2 litres: Same price as number 1 above.
    3. Petrol ("Gas"): €1.55/litre (c. $7.67/ US gallon)
    4. Restaurant meals: c. €40-60 for 2 people, not incl. wine (c. $52-$78)
    5. Jeans: €100+ (c. $130)
    6. Gym & swimming pool membership: €500 - €700 per annum (c. $650 - $915)

He is from Ukraine and I think he meant monthly. The PPP per capita list is very deceptive. I don't think GDP per capita correlates very well with actual income. Equatorial Guinea has a PPP per capita of $20000 but most of their population is dirt poor. If you look closer at the top ranked countries. Macao is just basically a gambling, prostitution and money laundering den for the Mainland Chinese. Much of the city is in a poor state of repair and it does not look rich at all. Although Hong Kong is on par with the US, the median salary is less than $1500 a month and we have the highest property prices in the world. That is why we have people living in cage or coffin homes. Otherwise with the exception of petrol, prices of other goods on the list are lower than Irelands but are slightly higher than Ukraine's. In Singapore, the average cabinet minister gets paid around $1M a year, that is despite having a population of only around 5 million. Their rationale is unless you pay politicians a "decent salary", they will start taking bribes and Singapore will end up like Indonesia where people have to seek work overseas.

If he meant USD MONTHLY, YIKES! ***I*** make more than THAT. A brain surgeon only gets like $2500/month? I could believe that in a place where the cost of living were lower, but there it ISN'T!

I think usually, the locals can find ways to live on a lower salary. Talking about extreme wage variation, take a look at the salary packages for Cathay Pacific Pilots in Hong Kong. I have automatically translated the numbers into US dollars by dividing HK$ by 7.78. The total worth of a remuneration package for a senior Cathay Pacific captain can easily exceed US$400,000 per year. A few years ago, the pilots actually went on strike for higher pay. There are no prizes for guessing what level of public support they had. Becoming a Cathay Pacific pilot is one of the quickest ways to become a millionaire.

Cathay Pacific - Careers : Careers Home

Salary is complimented by the following benefits.

A Second Officer's starting salary package is around US$5784 per month. First Officers in their first year can expect to earn around US$10925 per month and Captains between US$16709 and US$25706 per month. Hong Kong residents are fortunate to enjoy a low sliding scale personal tax system that usually ranges from 12 to 15%. Other benefits to compliment your monthly salary package include (but are not limited to):

15.5% Company contribution to a pension scheme
Comprehensive private health insurance coverage for you, your spouse and your children
Up to 90% education allowance to assist with your children's education in Hong Kong
Extensive travel discounts for you, your spouse, your children and your parents or in-laws
Discretionary share in the Company's annual profit
          Discretionary 13th-month salary bonus
          Annual salary increments within rank

WOW! It is still amazing that frank abagnale:

    1. became a pilot, but never flew a plane! A CON, but he got most of the benefits.
    2. became a doctor, but never operated or diagnosed! A CON, but I believe he got ALL of the benefits.
    3. became a lawyer, supposedly legitimate, but never tried a case.
    4. was given the choice to marry into a rich family, but I don't think he did.

And yet he didn't go straight until he was convicted and caught again.

For a captain to get paid almost 60% more than the first officer, or the first officer to get paid almost twice as much as the second officer doesn't seem right. Then again, to get paid like a quarter million, with all those benefits, YIKES!

As for livig on a lower salary? That means CUTTING BACK! And if THEY must, then it is harder for others. Why would the stores even stock the stuff?

Interesting site is numbeo.com - it compares various income levels and cost of living. Unfortunately it uses New York as the US standard and NY is one of the most expenses places to live in the U.S.

NY is easily the most expensive state of the lower 48. Hawaii and Alaska are expensive in various ways, and may exceed it. Of course, we ARE talking state averages here.

But that is the problem with a lot of best/highest/lowest/worst comparisons. The one doing the comparison may use an extreme.

There are stores in the US where things look cheap, may be stale, etc... They have very little floor space, small aisles, etc... ALSO, if there is a problem, or you hae a question, you may find a few people to help you. I once went into a mall with several stores that were huge, the stock was around the periphery(NO AISLES!!!!), was VERY high priced, and it never looked like anyone was there.

Granted, that is different stuff, but I ALSO saw a store selling carryon suitcases for over $600USD, when most places sell better ones for less than $60USD HECK, after looking at that $650 one, I went to a store a few blocks away and bought one for about $50.
