Sounds like a great day. I spent two full days this weekend with my daughter at a highland dancing competition. I love watching them.

Ever heard of The Highland Clearances?

If you are interested a bit then Google it or read some of this. It explains why so may Scottish people emigrated. So they were sort of dominated.

The Highland Clearances and the Effects on Scotland Today

And if you look at The Union Flag that gets up the nose of separatist Scots, it is basically The English Flag on top of the Scottish Flag which is on top of The Irish Flag.

      Wales don't even exist.

So even the flag is political dominance.

You are right that some Scots want to leave The Union but not many in reality. They will have a vote in a couple of years. I suspect they will stay.

      Quite right too.

It is one of the most important and long standing political unions the world has known. It spawned The British Empire and has lasted 300 years spreading a form of Democracy and Law & Order around the world that many people in the world would wish to have.

All The above may be true but the English could not beat them into submission and the countries were only united because James rose to the English throne.

Now, you English may have eventually subdued the Scotts via warfare but Scotland was it's own independent country since the time of Robert Bruce.

Is that a correct assessment of the historical situation?

        If not let me know.

          Something along those lines yes.

You know many Americans annoy the Scots and Welsh by asking them whereabouts in England is Scotland? (or Wales)

I'm sure we make equally ignorant comments about The US.

When I was in China, I just gave up trying to explain that Canada, US, England, All European countries were NOT the same place. It's like trying to explain to some North Americans I've met here that China, Japan, Vietnam, and Malaysia are different countries with different languages and cultures. If they don't know it by now, don't bother explaining.

It's not actually the Irish flag; it's St. Patrick's Saltire, which was (a British invention) intended to represent the whole island of Ireland when it was part of the British Empire. But Ireland hasn't been part of the UK for nearly a hundred years now... and not even the Unionists in Northern Ireland use, or even like, the saltire.

It might be time to take it off the Union flag, and give the Welsh a place on it instead.

A matter of opinion. The Empire did produce some very nice buildings though; I'll give it that.
