How to use the "thank" feature?

OK so I feel pretty stupid not being able to find this - I did a search on the page and nothing.

How do you "thank" someone on a thread, w/o writing a whole post? I'm expecting some sort of a button, but I just don't see it.

I tried doing a search for "how to thank", but apparently it's a disallowed search because the words are too common.

    There is abutton directly under their response right next to "quick reply".

      However, you won't find it until you've reached 5 posts and posts here in the Off Topic don't count, as well as a few other places.

        Ah that would be why, thanks Terra!

        That seems really odd, though, to only give this feature after 5 posts - doesn't that just encourage me to be spammy and write "thank you" instead of just adding my name to a list of thanks? Heh.

          Not if you also wrote the reasons why you were thanking that person. Not only would it not look like spammy one liners that are so frowned upon here, but in the process, you would begin participating in conversations and getting to know some members as they get to know you.

          See how that works? I typed out all of the above when I could have said, "not at all" or a just mere "no".
