How do you deal with AdBlock / ad filters

Hi,
I recently had the idea, that people with ad filters in their browsers might decrease my income from display advertisements on my WordPress websites. I read about it in some online magazine where they mentioned that 45% of their visitors are using an ad filter aka AdBlock and they now ask them to turn it off.

That got my attention and I developed a plugin to count the ad blocking visitors just to give me an idea about how many there are. I was surprised. My main site has just below 10%, what I consider to be almost nothing compared to the 50% I have on my smaller, technical related websites. This might be due to a high rate of mobile visitors on the first project. Other projects of friends, who are running websites with ads on it, have about 20-30% and we now think about if and how to deal with it.

Would be nice to exchange some of your numbers, what numbers you consider high enough to do something and finally what you do about it. I think about not to penalize visitors with ad blockers, but to kindly remind them, especially returning visitors. Or also use the extra space for something useful, like a link to the facebook fan page.

How about you?

Well, to give you perspective from an Adblock user, I wouldn't recommend something to go around it simply because those who do use Adblocker do so because they don't like to be marketed to. They prefer to do their searching for whatever they want on their own terms and in their own time.

You wouldn't want to turn your traffic with Adblock users to no traffic from Adblock users, would you?

How about giving the visitors an option where if they were interested in whatever your popup ads are for to click on a link. Something along the lines of a list of what you offer after a well written, compelling bit of content explaining what you offer and why and ask for their support if they were so inclined?

Just a thought, but I definitely wouldn't do something to tick them off and alienate them from you altogether. Sort of like posting a thread that in a round about way is suggesting someone contact you to purchase your product to answer your poll when most can't without your said product.

Did you consider that the folks not buying/clicking can still help advertise your site to other people that are buyers/clickers (assumes the site is useful)?

    Don't burn your bridges.

I am not planing on burning bridges. I am not even thinking about any direct income related actions. Maybe using the extra space for some internal links or information about the facebook page. Just wanted to exchange some ideas here.
