I am always thinking Engineers are the best as we enjoy their hard works in our everyday life but when we become sick doctors works like angels for us. However who is the best in your opinion?

Engineers are the best. No doubt. Even when we are using WF we are actually enjoying contributions from Engineers.

Can an engineer stabilize a trauma patient?

Can a doctor design an efficient HVAC schematic for a skyscraper?

    Who's on first?

Yeah, I'd say it depends on what you want done. I wouldn't want an engineer setting a broken bone (and something like that even I would go to a doctor for). I also wouldn't want a group of doctors designing and building a bridge. I sure wouldn't be driving on that bridge at any rate.

Both are skilled in their own ways and we would be stuffed if we had neither or either were gone so it's not an "either or"... it's "we need both."

I'm very sorry. I think this is a silly question.

Which is better... dry cleaning or furniture?

For most people on a daily basis, engineers probably have more impact.

An MD with an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering was on the open heart surgery team that saved and prolonged my Dad's life by installing a defibrillator. LOL

      Training-wise doctors.

Both are stringent programs in uni but med school is much longer and harder to get in.

Meh... well let me explain. An MBBS/MD course is an allied course where one need to study on some basic subjects. On the other hand a 4 years long engineering course is focused on an specific subject most of the time. Like an Electrical & Electronics Engineering course doesn't deal with how to design base, pillars and beams for skyscrapers. Same for

Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Marine, Power, Chemical, Automobile, Transportation, Optical, Thermal, Aerospace, Structural, Biological, Petroleum, Nuclear, Industrial, Geotechnical, Environmental, Biomolucular, Materiel, Biomedical, Mining, Ceramic, Textile, Tele Communication, Agriculture engineering.... dont stop reading... Agriculture engineering has different branches... I know an agriculture University where I noticed these courses are available....

Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Biological, Environmental, Electrical, Mechanical bla bla bla...

But these are not usual Civil, Mechanical engineering. These are specialized engineering courses on relevant to agriculture. Such as a Civil engineer is specially trained on how to design proper irrigation system within a large area.

        Dont Stop Reading Here Too..............

Be informed Computer Engineering has different branches to be specialized too... Like

        Software Engineering
        Hardware Engineering
        Networking ................................................

You are not going to be a master hardware engineer on all devices. If you want to work in Intel as a Microprocessor Architect you have to stick with microprocessor technology and circuit design. Introductory Circuit Analysis by Robert L. Boylestad should be your first book you should complete within 3 months. Then spend years after years to get a ticket to join in Intel.

As almost all engineering courses are designed to teach specific areas so engineering courses are usually 4 year courses where MD is usually a 5 year course. After getting an MD degree you must study more to be a specialist on a specific branch like Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology etc. But same for engineering too. If I consist all engineering or relevant engineering courses within a single course its going to be a 10 year course to get just a bachelor degree indeed!

Well Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Telecommunication etc. courses has 50% or even more similar basic courses. Now If I try to integrate these courses into one course then it would become a 7 year course and you must spend more time than a doctor to be specialized on an specific branch like Robotix or so.

I HAVE NOTICED YANKEES UNDERESTIMATING ENGINEERS THAN OTHER NATIONS!!!!!!!!!

Shame on you guy who has little knowledge on Engineering education but giving verdicts here and there that medicine is harder than engineering!

One more thing I should clear my stand regarding the debate between engineering and medicine.

First of all these two subjects are completely different subjects, different field of studies, both are essential, both professions are respected as the most prestigious professions. I am neither against medicine nor over supporting engineering but I just want to stand against the guys who are trying to underestimate engineering as it is easy to be skilled! This is simply not true.

To become a skilled engineer one need to spend years doing hard works, studying regularly, keeping himself/herself up to date, feeling passion to his/her field of study and work. To become a good engineer one must have creativity. So its not child's play. Its difficult job. Same for medicine too. People sometimes say to become a specialist doctor one have spend lot more time than an engineer which is simply wrong. MD is an allied course while engineering is actually focused on specific subjects. I already discussed in details regarding this.

It's not a debate in the first place.

It's like asking whether it's best to use a fork or a spoon - depends on whether you want to eat meat or soup.

14 years for me. Prestress and Pile driving.
Most of my Engineers are very good at their work, but not so much in the people skills.

Since the comparison gauntlet has been thrown down, I would have to say....
      Doctors.

      Engineers generally cause me grief.

      TG,

I know you're kidding but, yes. There is this really nice rest stop - on Wilkerson Pass, CO- with beautiful mountain views that I used to go to when I went for scenic drives. At one point long ago, funding was cut and that place quickly deteriorated. I could not even step foot in the bathrooms they were so gross.

        Dan, speaking of restrooms...

I know a couple that started driving to Wilkerson Pass but had to turn around and come home about half-way there. They kept seeing signs that read "Clean Restrooms Ahead" and after cleaning about 40 restrooms they gave up and went home.

Yes, after the funding cuts, that was the government's privatization plan.

It's not comparable, because without them we couldn't imagine our lives... You see if engineer get sick, he wouldn't be able to heal himself, he needs a doctor, they are both important for eachother...

Well I myself is an engineer. Probably a doctor is going to be my wife. We have a relation for almost 6 months now. Never ever had any problem regarding Engineer vs Doctor issue.

This thread is looking ridiculous to me. I feel some interest to reply as I have to say something.

First of all MD and BS Eng are completely discrete field of study. No need to compare these two. There are thousands of logic anti logic you can show to prove medicine or engineering is superior. But in the end you are going to be ended without any widely accepted verdict.

Medicine is hard to study. An MD course require long time than a BS Eng course but it doesn't prove that MD is harder than BS Eng. As lonfore said BS Eng is actually a specialized course so it takes less time to award certificate to a graduate.

In the end to be a specialist doctor and to be a specialist engineer you have to work really hard.
