Who Do You Think Will Be On The Improve and on the downslide this year. My Patriots look to be in trouble-the Wes Welker trade made me sick. In your opinion who looks to be tough this season.

I like the Wes Welker deal. I did not like the Peyton deal at first because of his neck injury, but the season changed my mind. I think the Broncos have a chance as long as the weather does not get to Peyton's grip - if that theory is true.

I would never be one to underestimate Brady, or Belichick's ability to optimize his team.

It's time to get this thread going...Tonight my Broncos play Tim's 9ers in what could possibly be a Super Bowl preview.

    My top 3 teams are:

    Denver
    SF
    Seattle

Each of these 3 teams added a quality WR. Denver got Welker, 9ers got Boldin and Seattle got Percy Harvin. Percy Harvin going down is a huge loss for Seattle.

The Broncos and 49ers have both been slammed with injuries. And our best D player, Von Miller, could be suspended for the first 4 games. Rumors are, it's related to missing a required drug test for MJ and Miller missed the test because he was in Afghanistan visiting with US military troops. We'll see in about a week if the 4 game suspension holds up.

Atlanta is another team to look out for...but still not 100% convinced.

For me, the two mystery teams are NE and Baltimore. NE right now is without their top 5 receivers from last year. But Danny Amendola is a quality WR and could actually be an improvement over Wes Welker, if Amandola can stay healthy. Despite all their losses in pass catchers, it's still hard to bet against Tom Brady and NE will probably look to run the ball more this year.

Baltimore lost a bunch of players. But, they also added some really good players, so I'm not sure how to rank them. I do think missing Boldin and TE Pitta (out with an injury) will really hurt their O.

Also, watch out for Cincinnati. They should be pretty good and no one is giving them the respect I think they deserve.

As usual, the NFC East will be over-rated.

The NFC West will be very competitive, with both Arizona and STL improving in the off-season.

KC will take a step forward and win more than 2 games, like they did last year. But predictions for a major leap and contending with Denver is really reaching.

The Texans will again be tough. Indy will be about the same as last year.

The Steelers will take a step back, as will Jim's Chargers and the Giants.

Thom and Rob's Bucs will need Freeman to step up. It's a career year for Freeman. If he doesn't step up, his time may be over.

It will be interesting to see what the D's have come up with to counter the option QBs such as Kaepernick, Wilson and RG3.

And...If we can get over the injury bug, I predict my Broncos to win it all.

Freeman didn't play all that bad last year, but he does need to step it up if he wants to be a Buc next year. He's in the last year of his rookie contract and has been told the team won't negotiate a new one till after this season. I think drafting Mike Glennon sent Freeman a message he didn't want
Our biggest problem last year was a secondary that always played more for the other team they they did ours Our rush defense was number 1, our pass defense was an embarrassment

Your peeps are looking good Kurt.

Lucky for you the Orioles owner Peter Angelos didn't want to reschedule their game so that the Ravens could play at home.

I'm not sure it would have made any difference last night as Mr. Manning was on fire.

I don't see the Ravens repeating so I'll have to think about who the new champion will be.

Flaco threw the ball 63 times last night.

What about the Colts? That's it!

I see the Colts taking care of the Broncos in a playoff game.

How's that for a game of horse?

      Have fun football fans!

The dark horse this season will be St. Louis.

Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey lining up as receivers? Austin is going to give defensive coordinators seizures. If Sam Bradford can build a healthy 'relationship' with his two rookie receivers, the Rams may win a lot of games by simply outscoring the opposing team (defense be damned!).

I'm picking Denver over SF for the Super Bowl.

The bad thing is, both teams are really hurting from injuries. We've lost 4 OL starters and can't afford to get any more OL hurt. It's really hurt our OL depth.

But what an offensive shoot out, huh? LOL

Are you talking about QB Scott Tolzien? If so, he's on the Packers practice squad now.

The Packers have some key injuries too. The one that has my most concerned is the left tackle is lost for the season and they are starting a rookie there. He has look pretty good in preseason, but of course everyone is playing vanilla defense in the preseason.

Anxious to see how Eddie Lacy does.

...yes the last time we played Baltimore..was the day I came to officially hate John Fox.

30 seconds left in the game....you have two time outs...(that translates to 5 or 6 plays)...you have one of the best QB's in the history of humankind....you only need to go 60 yards...

      What do you do?

...well if your Mr. Fox you have your QB take a knee.

...and...to quote his postgame conference.. "I would do it 10 out of 10 times"

Fox is lucky I'm not his boss because he would have been fired within an hour of that press conference.

We have some serious offensive weapons.

Julius Thomas is an interesting story and a player that people should watch out for...

He was a 4 year lettterman in basketball and only played one year of football in college. The year we draft him was the strike/lockout, so he didn't have a training camp that year.

Then, on his very first catch in his very first game, he badly hurts his ankle and misses the rest of his rookie season. Ankle doesn't heal correctly and needs another surgery, so he misses his second training camp, as well as all of last season (his second).

If anyone needed training camp or two, it's a guy with only one season of college football. But, when he's had a chance, he's been spectacular and is a special athlete.

And congrats to the Heckle and Jeckles to holding Payton to only 7 TDs.

I think many overlook losing Pitta to injury and Boldin to the niners as the more damaging blow than the defensive players attrition.

Oh yeah, I'm not a fan of Gruden so I'm with you there.

I tried to find how the prognosticators made out in 2012. They must remove that content when the season is over, I couldn't find much. I did find one site that listed Jaws as having picked 65% of the games right through week 16. That put him at around 9th or 10th out of maybe 25-30 guys.

I think that was right around my percentage too, but the stats have been removed from my football pool so I'm only guessing. I probably averaged 10 or 11 right each week, so that would be 62.5% to 68.75%.

Boldin had a great game for the Niners and they needed it with Crabtree and Manningham injured. 13 recs 208 yards. I don't think they would have won the game without him. Plus an excellent game by Kaepernick: over 400 yards passing, 3 tds and no ints.

By the way, the Raiders played pretty damn well today. Reggie McKenzie, who was my girlfriend's next door neighbor until a couple months ago, is probably feeling pretty good about the Raider's performance even if they did lose.

Keep an eye on the Bengals.
They've got, possibly, the best receiving corp in the league.
And, finally, a quarterback who can get the ball to 'em.
A couple of good RBs, and a good OL.

And, Zimmer is the best Defensive Coordinator in the league
    and players who can execute.

As much as I hate to admit it, I'd have to agree with Kurt and Tim... I see a Denver/9er Super Bowl this year. If the teams avoid major injuries (like any team has to).

I don't think my Giants will even make the playoffs this year. Injuries are already making things tough, but I think too much will come down to how Eli plays week to week (which can be dicey...). I haven't been impressed with the offense in the preseason, but then I'm usually not.

NFC East OVER rated? Who's rating them that high to begin with? That division has not been all that dominant in a few seasons now. I don't see them being dominant this year either. I think if RG3 stays healthy, the Skins will get in the playoffs. Dallas may too, but as usual Romo will choke. If the Giants get streaky at the right time they can get in. Maybe.

Otherwise, I am looking forward to watching Peyton this season.

    OK....
Neither Baltimore or Pittsburgh will make the playoffs.
Without Ray Lewis they lose their identity.
Roethlisberger could very well be seriously injured.
The Steelers OL is weak and the Bengals have 2 of the best pass-rushers
    in the league.
To say of the rest of league going after him hard.

I usually don't like to make predictions because, as they say, "On any given Sunday..."
But, all things considered, I believe it will be a Broncos, Bengals AFC Championship.
I also believe it will be the Bengals D that will be the difference.
    So, (knock on wood), I'm picking a 9ers/Bengals SB. (Again :p ).
But, 3rd time will be the charm.
The Bengals will get the Lombardie Trophy.

The Bucs continued the "Lets make this Rookie QB a Star" Trend.

Bad decisions on both sides of the ball today.

      # Bucs mediocre ...again

Ok - I'm not going to complain too much, because SF played a great game, but how many games now have the refs taken away from Green-bay?

It's hard to say what would have happened if they got the call right, but one things for sure, they totally blew it. I don't know what McCarthy was thinking though when he accepted the original penalty. He risked giving up a touchdown for what? To maybe make a chip shot field goal five yards longer? That didn't make any sense to me.

I agree though, I'm tired of seeing Green Bay get shafted by bad officiating.

Yeah, some of the plays called didn't make much sense to me either, but usually the team makes him look like a hero for making those calls. This was just the wrong team to be taking those risks on.

Oh, cry me a river, Gaskill.

I'm tired of the Browns getting shafted by bad ownership, coaching, drafting, scheme, execution, staph infections, God, the CIA, invisible gremlins, etc.

At least the Browns kept the streak live: nine consecutive open day losses. If you can't win, at least be consistent.

...and my point was, you're a Cleveland fan, you shouldn't have positive expectations and therefore shouldn't be disappointed when the team doesn't live up to your non-existent expectations. And my expectations have been conditioned to be high, and so when they are not met, disappointment is expected.

Hey, I just noticed something. When you change the spacing in "so when" it becomes "sow hen." I'm easily amused.

See, there's where you go wrong. The Cleveland City Motto is, "There's always next year." Every time you say it, a small part of your soul turns black.

I understand making a bad call.
The game is too fast, and plays can be confusing.
But, how does a pro ref not know how to enforce the penalty?
In my opinion, the ref who made that decision should be demoted
      if not fired all together.

    Thom, Rob...

Losing to the Jets? What the Buc!

I'd be surprised if Sexy Rexy doesn't get fired before the season is over. The Jets are bad.

But (no pun intended) the Jets have some positive news. ESPN has a poll for worst play of the week and the play is against the running "champ". Mark Sanchez's "Butt Fumble" has been retired. It seems after 40 weeks no other blooper could "beat" it, so in the sake of competition, ESPN retired the Butt Fumble.

    It never gets old:

And, watching Sanchez flinch is also worth another look:

Like I said, it was like watching a game from 1976, our first year in the NFL The only good I could see is that it would be damn near impossible to play worse. To quote John McKay when he was asked about the execution of his team after a terrible game, "I'm all for it".

Must be a Jets QB thing. Way back in the Ken O'Brien days, they were playing Miami and he scrambled. He met up with a Miami defender and he flinched so hard he basically tackled himself (I think they referred to it as the phantom tackle in the papers). This was before internet popularity, Youtube, etc. I tried to find a video... no joy. It was a treasure to watch back then

I'm glad the Pack lost the game because the refs gave them a field goal that was clearly a missed one verses my Colts in a 1965 playoff game.

That is the reason the uprights are now elongated verses the way they were before the incident.

To top it all off we beat the Pack last year on a Packer missed field goal late in the game.

Mental mistakes (118 penalty yards) overrode an outstanding defensive effort.

Do you think the game tonight - Seattle vs 49ers - would have gone differently in a quieter stadium? - And do you think that Manning would have the same problem in that stadium?

Good point and good questions...Seattle is the most jeckyl/hyde team in the NFL, depending on playing at home or away.

I know preseason doesn't count for much, but Seattle pushed the Broncos all over the field and really kicked our butts. But, it was in Seattle.

I have Seattle #1 because they beat the 9ers, so I'm ranking them over the Broncos simply because of their quality win.

But, I should add that my Broncos have won 13 straight regular season games, all by at least 7 points, and I don't have them too far behind Seattle.

And, I believe Peyton can handle just about any situation.

Did anybody see the Bengals - Packers game?

    INCREDIBLE!

Bengals lead 14 - 0 before Rodgers even steps on the field.
They then procede to turn the ball over on 4 consecutive possessions
but allow only 3 field goals and a defensive TD.
Down 30 - 14 the Bengals win it when Lewis challenges a 1st down.
    He wins.
    Packers; 3rd and inches.
Franklin fumbles, Bengals return it for a TD.
    D holds. Bengals 34 - 30.
Both teams had 4 turn overs.
Bengals intercept Rodgers twice, breaking his 42 game record of not having thrown 2 ints
    in one game.

I wanted the Bengals to win but hated it was at the expense of the Pack.

Had I not moved to FLA. I'd have been there.

BUT how bad are the teams we would'nt of expected like
          The Giants
          The Steelers
          The 49ers???? Even The Redskins???
Why are they getting on the Jaguars so much?

WTF 49ers? 10 points in the last two games and leading the league in penalties ( or close to it )? Meanwhile Alex Smith and the Chiefs start out 3-0.

Speaking of the Giants, I think the 49ers caught whatever is ailing the SF Giants because they are both playing way below their level after playing in the Championship the year before ( with the SF Giants winning it ). I sure hope the Warriors don't catch whatever it is.

By the way, Kurt sure is quiet the past few days about the NFL. i think he is just waiting until after the Raider game tonight so he can post the "we bad" video. The Raiders are improved but I don't expect them to offer much competition tonight.

I expected a down year for the Steelers.
I agree about the 9ers and Giants. I expected the 9ers
to be headed for the SB again.
I think the Pack will bounce back and the Bears to fade.

Another impressive win Kurt. It's funny how I was feeling the Raiders were playing well even when they were behind by 3 touchdowns. That's both a testament to how good Denver is and how improved Oakland is over the last few dreadful years. lol

As well as the Broncos are playing, they still haven't really put a whole game together and I feel we could be even better.

Having Peyton Manning on the Broncos is so much fun for me. It's amazing how accurate he really is. In this game, he was 32 for 37 and all 5 of his incompletions hit the receiver in the hands. A couple of them would have been tough catches, one was knocked out of the TE's hands, but they were all on target.

I always liked the Broncos. They are indeed turning out to be a fun team to watch, but I only get to see nationally televised games

Now, the way I see it Kurt... Denver can slide a little of that WIN karma to the G-Men and have plenty to spare. Would you talk to them please???

Maybe Eli and Peyton can post in the JV section?

Maybe trade some of Eli's Superbowl magic for some of Peyton's regular season success?

Uh... listen.... I'm a Bengals fan.

Mikey Boy Brown aspires to mediocrity.

Mediocrity gives fans hope and puts butts in the seats.

He has no concern whatsoever about winning a SB.

Lewis has more control over the team than any other head coach
besides Paul Brown because Mikey Boy has is in the process of passing the torch.
His daughter Katie, (Punkin), and her husband Troy talked Mikey out of hiring
Tom Coughlin and, instead hired Marvin Lewis.
Funny... Mikey finally makes the right decision but lets "Punkin" talk him out of it.

You aren't actually trying to compare organizational suckitude with that of the Cleveland Browns are you?

I get that the Bengals (Bungles) have had their moments, but you need either be criminally insane or to have had a TBI to accomplish the level of asshattery the Browns' management has accomplished since '99.

Well, The Ravens are the Browns.
Had Modell, (who thought it a good idea to fire Paul Brown), not moved the team
                you'd be sittin' pretty.

As it stands, The Browns are an expansion team.

And, I might add, they just beat the Bungles.

Technically, the Ravens are the expansion team. Cleveland kept its history.

Realistically, the Browns were an expansion team. It's difficult to continue using that label as an excuse 14 years later.

Regarding beating the Bengals, the Browns can't even tank a season correctly. That's how badly this organization is run. They trade the face of the organization and start their THIRD string QB over their healthy #2 QB in an attempt to throw the season and, of course, reel off two, potentially three, straight wins. Ugh.

Considering the odds of someone playing NFL football, this an amazing
family. The oldest brother, Cooper, might have played pro
(probably as a wide receiver) except he was diagnosed with spinal
stenosis in high school and so did not play college ball.

There's a story that when Peyton and Cooper were, respectively,
around 4 and 6 years old and watching their dad QB the Saints
(then called the Aints) in a bad game, they put bags over their heads
like many Saint fans did back then. Made Mom laugh.

      Tremendous game!

Right before it was a 13 - 6 Bengals win over the Pats.

The Bengals D ended Brady's 52 game passing TD streak.
They swarmed all over him and the rest of Pats O.
On the winning TD drive the Bengals had the ball 3rd and 17 from their own 1.
Proceeded to shred the Pats D and score the games only TD.

Well, this is as good a place as any to post my first. Just gotta say, as much as I loved having P. Manning in Indy for all those years, it was best for all to see him go. He would've gotten absolutely killed behind the Colt's o-line last year. Good for him that he has a staunch offense. Playing the best of his career (but he'll still go into Canton as a Colt).

That said, can anyone doubt now that Indianapolis made the right move by letting Payton go and signing Andrew Luck? That kid's a bulldog and Indy's back on stride after 1 hiccup of a year in 2011. He's nothing but a winner and the Colts get to go immediately from one stud QB to another; they're set for another 15-year run.

You can keep your RGIII and Colin K. The way Luck takes command of games is outstanding. Can't wait until Payton's return to The Luke. That's going to be one 'elluva game!

      Yeah, it's certainly starting.

Yet oddly (for NY sports and media) I have not yet heard the throngs of "Tom Must Go!!!". Really, I think some front office changes are needed. Someone's not thinking. They need a runner - so they bring back Brandon. No help (which we knew). They need help on defense, they bring in a LB who's not played well in several years who lost HIS job to a LB the Giants lost to them.

As a Mets fan, I am used to disappointment. As a Giants fan, this is beyond disappointing so far.

Depends really. On the last 2 super bowl wins, I recall they started well, hit mid-season slumps then went on a roll at just the right time. With an 0-5 start, unless the make some personnel moves (players) I don't expect a playoff run.

Coughlin does have that benefit and the Mara's don't typically fire a coach mid-season. But I didn't think he had that much benefit from the sports media and NY fans. THAT is unusual. You should hear Yankee fans this season since they didn't make the playoffs

RIP to Bum Phillips who passed away yesterday.

Also, a belated RIP to Art Donovan, who left us about a month ago.

They were two of the all time greatest sports characters (and people) ever.

When asked about Don Shula as a coach, Bum said:

But, they lost Leon Hall for the season putting their already depleated D backs in an even deeper hole.

What a game! I did more yelling for this game than I've done all season.

At the end of the 3rd, with the score 33-17 I knew if we scored just 3 more points - the rest of the game, it would be dam near impossible for Peyton to pull off a miracle comeback - we scored 6 but I am without fingernails.

As a longtime Colts fan, I can say that Lucas Field is no longer Peytons' Place.

We'll probably have to deal with him again in this years' playoffs.

At least you guys make the playoffs like every other year or so. That's all the average NFL fans could hope for.

I'm sure you remember how it was before Marvin don't you?

Maybe this year you'll win a playoff game or two.

And one of these years everything will come together and you may win it all.

Don't get greedy and fire Marvin just because you're not progressing as fast as you'd like.

I remember what happened to Detroit after they fired Wayne Fontes in the 1980s.

Detroit was competitive every year but that wasn't good enough for the ownership and the fans.

Fontes was fired and that lead to a non-competitive downhill slide for the Lions over the next 20 or so years - until recently.

So be careful Bengal fan and enjoy what you have.

I didn't even know about the stars in the logo and as Ed MCman used to say to Johnny, you are correct sir regarding the 8 divisions.

I thought teams played 8 division games but it's only 6.

ESPNS' Pat Yasinkas says it all for me:

What it means: Did you really think the result was going to be any different? Even when the Bucs had leads of 21-0 and 24-7? Of course not. If you've followed Tampa Bay this season, you knew a second-half collapse was coming, and it did. The Bucs squandered a shot to beat one of the NFL's best teams in one of the league's loudest stadiums. Instead, they're 0-8 and at a new low point.

Schiano Watch: There already has been plenty of speculation about coach Greg Schiano's future. That's only going to intensify now. The Bucs got conservative once they got the lead. And, once again, Schiano and his staff failed to make the proper halftime adjustments. I'm sure ownership is hesitant to make a coaching change at midseason. But one might be seriously pondered after a loss like this.

Historic moment: The come-from-behind victory was the largest in Seattle history. The previous largest comeback was from 20 points against Denver in 1995.

Wasting a big day: Playing in place of the injured Doug Martin, rookie Mike James rushed for 158 yards and also threw a touchdown pass. But none of that really mattered because the Bucs lost.

On the other hand the Bucs finally got their first win last night and looked good doing it for a change. I'm diggin the hell out of our new Quarterback and I was pretty impressed with our number 4 and 5 tailbacks. Not to mention our D holding the Fins to only two yards rushing for the entire game

I like the Broncos. First, because we're at home.

But second, the pundits are only talking about the Chiefs defense. However, if you compare the two Ds for the past 3 games (since we got Von Miller back), our D has actually been statistically better than the Chiefs.

And it's been against better QBs. The Chiefs have faced second and third string QBs each of the past 5 games. Peyton, even with a sprained ankle, isn't a backup QB.

I don't think there's another team in the league that could have literally put a team together on the fly as they have and maintained one of the better records as they have and actually be morphing into a legitimate powerhouse at just the right time. Go Pats!

One of the best moves we've made in a long time
He got his start in the NFL as Dungy's Linebackers coach.
He had a winning record with the Bears in addition to taking them to the super bowl once and the playoffs three times.
If Dungy, Brooks, and Nickerson think he's the right man for the job that's good enough for me.

49ers and Broncos was my preseason pick for the Superbowl, so I'm sticking with it, although Seattle has looked tough all year.

We have Wes Welker, Dominique Rogers-Cromatie and Champ Bailey back this week and none played against the Chargers the last game. Hopefully they will make a difference.

      Congrats Kurt!

I just got back from Vegas where I watched the game in a big playoff party in one of the casinos. Great atmosphere! I ended up betting a little bit on the Niners to beat the point spread which was Seattle by 3 1/2. I would have won the bet if Kaepernick hadn't thrown the interception which led to the last field goal. Damn!!!! It hurt more just to lose the game though. I can't stand the Seahawks. Did you hear about the Seattle fan who got a tattoo saying "Seattle Super Bowl XLVIII Champs" before the 49er game?

I'm really, really pulling for the Broncos and am hoping they beat them by a good amount. Say 27 points. However, whatever you guys do, just make sure you win. I'll take a 1 point win. Then Seattle will be 0-2 in the Super Bowl.

Glad to see Peyton make it back to the Stupid Bowl.
But, I hate Elway. Always have after he stiffed the (then Baltimore), Colts
    when they drafted him.
    Funny how things come around.
Elway stiffed the Colts and refused to sign with them rather than man up and do what
the draft was designed for: Help the lesser teams improve.
And now, he's counting on Manning who did sign with a bad Colts team and took them to the Stupid Bowl.
Wonder if that ever came up in Elway/Manning conversations.

Either way, number 8 made sense:

If you stick a microphone in a football player's face seconds after he made a huge play to send his team to the Super Bowl, you shouldn't be surprised if he's a little amped up.

Thumbs down to the officials for their many horrendous calls this year. I don't think there was a single team that didn't get screwed by one or more awful calls this season.

      I agree.
Too many bad calls, missed calls, and wrong calls.

I'll be pulling for the Seahawks only because Russell Wilson was the Wisconsin Badgers QB for a year. I wouldn't bet against Denver though. My guess is Peyton's experience will make the difference.

      What about Montee Ball?

Is he playing? I haven't watched Denver much this year, but in what little I did see it was Knowshon (sp?) getting the carries. If Ball is getting carries I'll pull for him as an individual. The Seattle GM was in Green Bay for a long time too though, and did a lot for the Packers, so that's another "connection" with Seattle for me.

Plus I'm an NFC guy since that's the conference the Packers play in, but the truth is, I'm not really pulling hard for any team since the Packers are watching from home.

Montee "Meat" Ball is starting to come on. He struggled early, but that past 6-7 games he is averaging over 6 yards a carry. Knowshon does get most of the carries, mostly because he's a better pass blocker and receiver, but Ball gets some carries in relief.

Plus, Ball is much more a Badger than Wilson is...

That's true! I'm glad to hear Ball is coming on. He's a good kid. You never know if a kid will make the transition to the NFL. The Packers drafted two running backs in the last draft, and one is going to the Pro Bowl and the other barely sniffed the field.

Anyway, like I said, I think Peyton's experience will be the difference maker in the game.

    Congrats Kurt and sorry Tim.

The refs blew a least a couple of calls yesterday that reminded me of a Don King production which I pray won't be repeated in New Jersey two weeks from now.

The big game should be a classic with the leagues' all time greatest offense going up against a very, very stingy defense.

Let's hope the weather won't be a major factor.

-There has not been a back to back Super Bowl winner since the Pats did it in 2004 and 2005.

-Baltimore wins the Super Bowl last year and failed to make the playoffs this year.

As far as parity is concerned the NFL has what it wanted.
