Judging from the number of spam threads and copy/paste questions appearing....is the registration fee "out" now?

I kind of liked the idea of people having to pay for posting about nike or copying threads from other forums....

This spam has been going on for a while. It apparently happens mostly late at night(for the US anyway), or early in the morning. Perhaps that is only because there are no mods to catch it then.

Anyway, I kind of liked it when it was hidden, and there was a small fee for lifetime access. There is no way to go back to that so maybe they should start charging all new members a small fee to register.

I still got no answer why the membership was put back to free for new registrations?

Things look HORRIBLE around here today.

The 'posting bots' have been unleashed - and we - the popular of WF must suffer!

I believe the cyclic mechanism of seasonal forum popularity is a variable of consideration.

      Yep. About 10 days ago.
Probably because a majority of the spam is coming from Eastern Europe, Sub Continent and Asia?
      Nailed it.

India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are the biggest sources of noise. The "human bots" are more affordable there, and it's mostly SEO droppings. The machine-automated spam largely comes from Russia, China, and Romania.

The rest is scattered all over the world.
I still got no answer why the membership was put back to free for new registrations?
Because Allen decided that more closely fit with his goals for the forum, I suspect.

      Short term pain.

The guys already have systems in place that cut down around 80% of the "new" spam. Machine-generated stuff from Russia and China, mostly.

There's always a balance that needs to be struck. That gets thrown off after any change, and takes time to get re-established.

Wondered why there is an increase in "Newbie Needs Help" type threads along with related Spam....
What about the poor sods who had to pay their $10 to join the last few months...

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Kewl. Don't forget to wear your nikes after taking your viagra - your woman will love the new you, and you can find men that are looking for women to take care of at grab-a-scumbag.com.

The thing that frustrates me is the 60 seconds wait to report spam when they are stringing them out at the rate of 4 per minute.

If you see multiples from one account, just report one and mention that they're dropping others.

Sometimes you'll see a bunch in a single thread. You only really need to report one of those, too. Mention that the thread is being overrun with spammers, and we'll scan through and nuke them. It's much faster for you and for us that way.

It's not so much those Paul.
For example the other day I came into the OT and there where at least four spam posts from four different spammers.

I guess my question would be if you can't change the time limit is, would reporting one and saying there where four more by different spammers in the OT work?

Who deleted my earlier comment that included a 100% relevant link to a similar thread?

Spam is ok but relevant internal links to similar threads isn't ok?

    I don't get that.

      That would be me.

I did not delete the original thread, despite my first-sight impulse. And only because you had put it in the only place on the forum where it was appropriate.

Wow. I cannot believe that someone of your intelligence started a sentence with the proposition that anyone thinks spam is okay, other than the spammers.

    Thom,

There's a way to do that, too. Just get the link to the spam and include it in the report. To get those links, just right-click on the post number at the upper right of the post and choose "Copy link location." Then paste it in. You could report a bunch all in one message that way, and not have to mess with the time limit.

Paul I just reread my post and I should of said threads and not posts.
But I thought of a way to deal with that also.
When I click on the icon to report a post I can right click it and have it open in another tab. Then in the first tab I could simply click on each spam thread and past the urls in the spam report in the second tab. Does that make sense?

That's what I was picturing, but I didn't exactly say it clearly.

        Yes. That would work.
