Someone is attacking me

So I get up this morning, and do what I usually do. Get on my computer and check Skype, email and then go to my browser and check out the stuff I usually check out.

But today is different in that I can't back up and view what I was just looking at. My back button has been disabled. Every day it is something. I run trogen scans and virus scans all the time. Why is it that I always have to deal with this kind of stuff? Geeeeeez, I spend hours every day trying to fis something. I have some damn trogen or virus that pops up IE pages with ads on it, and i can't find it to save my life. I guess I just have to buy a new computer, but I don't have the money. Maybe next time I should just buy a Mac. My wife doesn't want another PC, she wants a Mac.

The fix for this seems to be complicated and not sure I can follow it. Or will it even work after I have spent the time? I saw one response that said it didn't work.

I got chit to do, I ain't got time for this. So why am I wasting my time writing about it? I want to rant, and no one is close to listen to me.

Maybe no one here will bother to read this either? Who knows, it is a holiday for most of the surfing crowd. I don't have holidays, this is what I do.

  • Have you tried combofix? There are people on the bleepingcomputer forums that can help you get the virus removed. (walk you through the steps after looking at your logs)

  • I have time and just read your post from top to bottom

    The thing you should do is FORMAT your computer and reinstall Windows. This will clean up any viruses you have. If you dont have the skills to do this, then ask someone who can help or ask the IT guys at your favorite computer store to format your computer and reinstall Windows. I am sure they wont charge you that much. If you have important files like document, then ask them to save those.

    The next thing you should do is purchase and install an anti-virus package. This is a very important step. It will protect your computer from becoming infected again. It is totally worth the cost of the package. I use AVG Anti Virus and I am happy with it. Another good one is NOD32 or Norton, but only use Norton if you have enough resources since it is a resource intensive antivirus, but it is one of the best. Both AVG and NOD32 are light weight for slower computers.

    As last, ignore your wife. Dont buy a MAC. They are expensive and personally not worth all that extra cost. You can get a much better Windows PC for the same price.

    • Well, NOBODY, ON THIS PLANET, "has the skills" to do that!

      I mean do YOU have an eidetic memory(SO RARE that NO memory champion winners have one, and some scientists say NOBODY has one. I know of ONE person that CLAIMS to), and the time to:
      1. Backup EVERYTHING!
      2. REFORMAT!
      3. Install windows!
      4. install the antivirus software, which you must HOPE AND PRAY is PERFECT!
      5. REDO EVERY BLASTED THING EVER DONE, including reinstall ALL software, FROM the ORIGINAL CDs.
      6. Restore the data portions of the backups PERFECTLY! CAREFUL, this is not always documented, etc....
      7. HOPE AND PRAY you didn't do this for NOTHING!

      MAN, I HATE it when they talk about things like this like it is SO simple. It ISN'T! NOT BY A LONG SHOT! If you just restore everything, you will undo the idea of the format. If you don't install the antivirus first, you may destroy it. If you don't do *******EVERYTHING*******, it may be different. I have some programs that take like a day to install ALL BY THEMSELVES!

      Some sites just disable the backup facility when you are on that site(FORMAT THE BLASTED COMPUTER ALL DAY, and it WILL NOT HELP!)! Some sites go through multiple pages to make the backup facility flaky after you have gone to that site that site(FORMAT THE BLASTED COMPUTER ALL DAY, and it WILL NOT HELP!)! Some sites go to a new page/tab which means you must close that page/tab to make the backup facility work after you have gone to that site that site(FORMAT THE BLASTED COMPUTER ALL DAY, and it WILL NOT HELP!)!

    Hello timpears,

    It's very hard to track down a problem when we can't see it ourselves how it works. This is programming and only a little piece of changed code matters so you'll have to explain much better if I should be able to track the problem for you. It is very possible that you've been infected by a rat and they're hard to track if you don't know how to do it. Firstly, I suggest you to take away your webcam if you have one. The rat creator can be a pedofile watching you right now. There is several solutions but my favorites ones are; ( I'm working as a security manager so I usually track them down ) or I reinstall the OS. If you reinstall the OS, the rat should be gone. Also it seems like you're having problems a lot of time. My suggestion to you is to learn some basic security knowledge and get a good antivirus program.
  • Take it in to Geek Squad at Best Buy! For $200 they will fix any issues you're having and cover your computer with a 2 year warranty. Much better alternative to buying a whole new computer, especially if you can't afford a Mac right now.

      Or a "no-money-at-all-solution" would be to format the computer and reinstall the software.
  • I'll second AVG antivirus; also HitManPro for deeper problems. I like techguy.org forum for help; they will talk you through everything - nice people, at least the last time I was there!

    PC isn't really the problem as much as putting up a firewall, browser you might be using and antivirus running. My son bought a MAC and now tells me it was the worst financial decision he's made. He built a desktop PC and likes it so much more than his laptop.

    • Long time ago I was also always running virus scans, malware scans etc. But all that eats up too much time. I don't care anymore about all the hype this companies who are selling that stuff are making. If there is a malfunction I go on working. Once a year I'm taking the machine to an IT to fix the issues. This guy is telling me to forget about paid virus protection because they are not better than the free ones, so I do so and don't waste my time. I had a lot off issues' that I did not care about and after a few days they were gone by themself. As more attention you pay for them as more they want. Just my opinion.
  • You could always try Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download.

    I think I had a virus like that which was downloaded with some software, can't remember what but I'm pretty sure it fixed the issue. Anyway, I've only ever used the free version and so far it's served me well.

    EDIT: Thinking about it, it could have been a toolbar that I removed under uninstall programs, not quite remembering fully.

      Along with Microsoft Safety Essentials and you should be able to fix the problem
      and fully protect your PC.

  • I am using AVG, but it doesn't seem to be much help. My computer was reformatted with a new hard drive and new mother board not much more than a month ago. I still have not installed some of my programs. Adobe Pro will not install and gives me an error every time I treid to install it. I gave up.

    I am tired of dealing with it all, I got to get the money for a new computer.

    But I thank everyone for listening to my rant. And for the feedback they have given.
  • Well I got a work around for this problem, I have to go to the history drop down and select the back one spot or two from that list Firefox gives me.

    The work involved to clean up a computer is not worth it to me any more. Been there, done that.

    My wife thinks that someone is getting into her computer, she has so many problems. She may be right, I don't know. I know this, as soon as I can afford it, I am getting two new computers, and they may be Macks. Haven't decided yet.

    There are a LOT of viruses that have a trojan effect, and also trojans that do. So you might be right. Such is the way things are going. And windows is a BAD platform. Be careful about assuming things though. People today, that writ websites, are just STUPID, or have a stupid idea they push on you to try to accomplish their own goals. One favorite example is how some send a command to disable copying and pasting. You can't copy/paste on their site, any other sites, or even M/S OFFICE! Close the pages on THEIR site, and you can suddenly use cut/paste EVERYWHERE! DANI would have you reformat! I ONCE decided to follow M/S advice, which basically requires everything BUT the reformat, and t took me over TWO WEEKS to recover! TWO WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!! ome programs simply are huge, have requirements, require interaction, etc. If you had to fully install office everytime you wanted to use it, people would ABANDON it

  • 1) Download Emisoft (badass virus engine, trust me). - The free version will do fine.

    2) Update engine.

    3) Run a full scan of all drives.

    4) Download "noscript". Never run any scripts on shady websites. (or any website you don't absolutely have to).

    5) Download adblockplus.

    6) Don't erroneously believe that MAC is safe. With its increasing popularity, you'll see increasing quantities of vulnerabilities start popping up. Malware is just like marketing; the bigger the niche, the more money, the more malware developers.

    I always hear people say "I don't need antivirus.. I have a Mac!"

  • My firefox has been giving me problems lately too, but nothing like yours.

    Instead, mine keeps on loading the last page that I was on when I closed the browser, not my home page.

    I've checked all of the settings, I've updated to the latest version of FF.. nothing helped.

    I would switch to chrome, but the import feature apparently didn't import my passwords. Ha.. way too much work to do that by hand.

    • Mine does that too, but l find that if l delete or press the red button while online it doesn't appear again when restarting!


      After updating it took me forever to get my tropical template up again, but l figured it out!

    • You sure it's just not just picking up where your last browsing session left off? That's what it sounds like. If that's it, it's a feature I really like.

      You can stop it from doing that though. See where it says "When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time" in the screen capture below? Click the dropdown arros and change it to "Show my home page" ...you'll find it here: Tools > Options > General tab.

    Try NPE. It's free. If it will not work - format your computer. See posts above. And first thing to do after formatting - install antivirus.
  • Actually, I've stopped using Firefox and have been using Chrome
    because of multiple problems with Firefox.

    • The only time I seem to have a problem with FF is just before an update comes out. I think the folks at Linux Mint and Google had a falling out. I can't install chrome or can I install google search on my machine. When I first started using Linux Mint I could. Doesn't really bother me though. FF still works for me and I use Startpage HTTPS for my search engine and home page.

    • I looked at a Mac about a year ago. It took all of 10 seconds and it froze up. The store employee had to restart it. Needless to say I wasn't too impressed. All I did was try to connect to Pandora.com so I could see what the speakers sounded like.
  • The last time I had a virus, I tried a lot of anti-virus programs and none of them found the virus, except for malwarebytes.org
  • Reformat?, reinstall windows?, go to geek squad? LOL!!! are you guys serious? Calm down here....It sounds like a Browser Hijack. There are FREE programs on the internet that can help get rid of them, and protect you in the future.
    Not leaving malwarebytes installed was very bad advice in my opinion. You can set it not to pop up like you were talking about. Malwarebytes is about the best free protection against spyware and malware out today.
    I know this is my first post here, I'm not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, but some of you are waaaay over reacting here advising the gentleman to reformat his PC.

    Also, not everything is a Trojan. A trojan lets it's "controller" take control of your system for malicious intent, unlike a virus that get's in your system and messes it up.

    • Hmmmm, you couldn't give us a step by step on that one, l tried everything l could think of, to stop it from appearing every time l turned the computer on!

      In the end l gave up, and pulled it, so l can reinstall if my Laptop starts to act up!

      I think that if l pay to use it, then the annoying screen disappears!

      PS l agree, to many tech, heads who can pull the entire OS off and reinstall in their sleep, are here to fix a minor issue. I did it once, and it is not easy!

    You think YOU have been attacked? ****HUH****! For maybe a year, every time I turned around, I got a new error. the second most recent one was the mouse failed. The LAST time, reboot became unstable.

    OK, I managed to correct all up to the third to the last, by redoing the sound drivers. With the mouse, I tried to upgrade the drivers, etc... NOTHING! I have been traveling with a USB mouse ever since.

    And the DISK? Well, I upgraded the disk drive. I have 50% more space and it is about 25% faster. YEAH! STILL, UNSTABLE!

    Well, yesterday I decided to try again, and pull out the stops. I upgraded the mouse AGAIN! I also reflashed the BIOS. RESULT? The mouse works, and the system seems stable! ALSO, I WAS on bios 2.09, and NOW it is 2.14! I even wondered about the fan, but it is definitely working now! The fan may even speed up my system. This is the fastest and best overall syste I have ever had, and I want to keep it at least a few more years.

    Maybe I got a bios virus. They are apparently rare, but they exist.
