Give Paula Deen a Break

I can't believe all her sponsers are getting rid of her for something that happened a long time ago, ya know we've all said stupid things in the past and had to deal with them. They are ripping this old gal apart, though I'm not a big fan I think television started something that snowballed and is out of control. She's really not a bad person. I don't know what's your opinion. Paula Deen can cook though.

I agree with you - it's political correctness run amok. If she had said this recently, that's one thing. But now we go back years to find things people did that we don't approve of?

From what I've read (though news hasn't mentioned it much) Deen team that she hired to work with her is all colors and races. Unfortunately, looks like she hired one troublemaker.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

      Amazing, isn't it?

What I don't understand is, why does PC persist even though virtually everyone,
including politicians, know and openly say, it's BS.

When the guy who tried to rob her found out about this, he called her and apologized. He admitted it was his fault and is devastated over what is happening to her now.
Seems to me if he is taking the blame for putting her in this situation, others who had nothing to do with it ought to lay off her.

What would really be cool is for him to call a press conference about forgiveness. I heard that Jesse Jackson had some kind words for Paula.

I'm not into politically-correct speak. At this point in time, she should be judged on what she does now instead of in the past. As a rather famous preacher once said, Let him who is without sin cast the first stone and we know the crowd walked away. The whole problem now is that the crowd will all deny they have ever done anything wrong or similar. I have to call BS on that. It seems like an angry mob mentality and need to fit in with the crowd.

If you remember, she was also tried and convicted in the court of public opinion just recently for her cooking and apparently hiding her diabetic condition. I didn't pay a lot of attention to that, either. She has surely got more than enough money now to just run her restaurant and promote her cookbook(s) for the fans who do like her and I would bet there are a lot, albeit not very vocal online or in the news.

Actually, I'd like to see more real, non-slanted news about important events going on and less about her past diverting attention from things we do need to know.

It's more than her using one word really. The story about having black guys dressing up like they did in the plantation days to serve people for her brother's wedding is kind of offensive to many folks. There's other stuff too.

      Kay,
      You are absolutely right.
She was in the area within the past year, dont remember the dates because I am not really a fan,but she was shooting some kind of spot. A friend of ours helps run the place Deen was shooting in.
Her report? Deen is 100% fake off camera.
Accent goes away, niceness goes away, complete change.

Honestly though this should not surprise anyone. Most entertainers are like that.

I think most people are like that Kim.
It's rare for any celebrity or politician not to put on a smiley face and project a "nice" image when in front of a camera.

Paula Deen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

She had her carreer destroyed because 30 years ago, a black jerk was going to kill her, and she insulted him!

    Black racism killed Trayvon

She seems to be a nice woman, and she has ENOUGH problems! In addition to all this, she recently found she is diabetic, and must change many things. So she uses a word MANY blacks do to describe a black that endangered her life. What should she do? Pay him, and laud him?

The "story" about the wedding was a private conversation about a "what if" - it wasn't planned or done or even proposed.

It's a rare person who has not said something to family or friends that some other group would find objectionable. I'd question the motives of someone accepting money from a person who then turns on that person and reports private conversations overheard as proof of "racism".

The problem with this story is it's overkill. You don't need to destroy a person because you don't like something someone said they said. You don't need to continue to fight a person because you don't agree with words they used long ago.

It would be interesting to know the background story and motives of the person who started this attack.

The same people who continue to harp on Paul Deen long after it makes common sense - are those who excused Rev Wright's comments and conveniently forget Sharpton's use of the N word, etc.

        Let it go.

Accusing someone as being racist, sexist, or whatever, without it being true, will just get people SICK of things. Things are starting to crack. Oh well. at THIS point, if society around ME doesn't crumble, and the "US economy" "survives OK", it might be fun to watch!

Still, I DON'T like seeing people like Paula Deen suffer so.

As much as I agree with you that it was fairly unreasonable to hold her accountable so harshly for some opinion she voiced years ago, I propose we give the people who dropped her a break. I'm not sure if I would want my brand name associated with her.

As much as this situation is unfortunate, it's one of those "it is what it is" moments.

    Wrong Place. Wrong Time.

I highly doubt she will ever forget the power of keeping it to yourself ever again.

The case was filled by an employee who is suing Deen and her partner, her brother, alleging racial and sexual discrimination. Apparently the brother uses racial and sexual slurs on a regular basis but Deen defends him because he does it in a nice way and isn't "mean". This is where Deen told the story about her desire to have a plantation theme wedding. It wasn't really a "private" conversation if it is done in a workplace.

Hey, her losing her deals with sponsors, the Food Network, her publisher, etc... this is how capitalism works. The sponsors pay you to represent them and if you do something that hurts their brand they have the right to cut you loose. It happens all the time with sports athletes. I can't relate to Paula Deen's plight at all, so don't have any sympathy for her. Honestly, I never even heard of her until this scandal surfaced here. In my entire life, since I was a wee little child, I never used the "N" word. If I had, it would have been one of those rare occasions that one of my parents would have smacked me. Or one of my brothers, who never need much excuse to smack me, would have whooped me for it. What kind of family permits that kind of sh*t? I know none of my friends' families did (grew up with friends of many races and never even thought about it until I heard the issue of race brought up in a US presidential debate).

Well, she has been advertising in the US for DECADES. Many may not remember her because she doesn't stand out. Admittedly, I don't know if she does ANYTHING in canada.

I never used the N word either, but she is from an earlier time and an area where many used it. If she used it only a couple times, it would be tantamount to not using it AT ALL. Did you ever see the color of friendship? BTW it is based on REAL events. They didn't even change names. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Col...ip_(2000_film) It shows how the society can color opinion, words, and even treatment.

A US family decides to get an exchange student from south africa. THEY assume the person will be black. After all, THEY just think ***AFRICA***! The family/country in south africa assumes the person in the US will be white. After all, they have seen NO blacks socializing with whites, and the father is a US representative!

THEY figure the girl from S.A. is a racist monster of sorts. The girl from S.A. is just SCARED. The girl turns out to be nice, and the family fights the S.A. government to KEEP HER! The S.A. government, because she is a citizen, they are scared too, and there is so much racial strife, fights to get her back.

ANYWAY, the girl might even have been forgiven for calling her host sister(for want of another term) a kaffir! After all, it was once considered NEUTRAL! SHE tries to explain this to the host sister, saying that kaffir isn't really good NOW, so SHE would call the host sister bantu. Bantu is an AFRICAN word that basically means PEOPLE, so it has NOTHING to do with whites at all. Whites didn't even create the word. When the host sister, in the movie at least, makes a mistake and says they would be called kaffir, the father acts as if the girl were some rabid monster out to destroy his family.

BTW the movie ALSO shows how the media differ! In the US a person is considered a freedom fighter that is just, and was murdered. In S.A. the SAME person is called a rebel trouble maker criminal that ended up dying.

Well, I'm sure she will pick up some new ones sooner or later also. Those girls probably deserve to be arrested Thom. Edit: They were arrested and are being charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct. Plus they should lose any sponsors they might have. Not sure how bringing up other examples makes things any better for Deen. The Deen story is a big one because she is fairly well known.

No Tim the Deen story is a big one because it diverts attention from what is actually going on in this country.
Those girls are being charged with assault, battery, and disorderly conduct true. But why aren't they being charged with a hate crime?
A hate crime is the victimization of an individual based on that individual's race, religion, national origin, ethnic identification, gender, or sexual orientation.
What they did was clearly racially motivated.
I'm not trying to makes things better for Deen, just putting things into perspective.
Why the national outrage over what Deen said 20 years ago, but no national outrage over what those girls did or the killing of innocent people by our government with unmanned drone strikes?

First, I don't think there's a national outrage. It's just a story getting played all over. I hear more people upset that it's a big story than are upset about what she said frankly. If it wasn't her fall from grace, the story would be about Justin Beiber or Kim K. And sure, there are more important things in the world but that's how we roll in the good ole USA. We like our news lite and easy to digest.

Not surprising - but not as much celebrity perhaps as savvy business woman. It's surprising but many people seem to think Martha Stewart and Paul Deen are just lucky to have become rich and famous by being "good cooks".

Both of them are extremely bright women with a lot of ambition and business sense.

I'm not a Paula Deen fan and I do think her accent has gotten more pronounced since she became famous. She makes a lot of money being the caricature of real Southern woman.

Both of them are extremely bright women with a lot of ambition and business sense.

I'm not a Paula Deen fan and I do think her accent has gotten more pronounced since she became famous. She makes a lot of money being the caricature of real Southern woman.
Who really knows about her like that. As for the accent? She is from an area that USED to have such an accent. When she was youngr, she likely DID have such an accent. TODAY, those accents have all but disappeared. Maybe it is due to hollywood or something.

As for how nice she is, on the show, she HAS to act relaxed, etc... All should be ready, etc.... There is little reason to be mad and every reason NOT to be. Outside of that, she must let people know she isn't some frail compromising old woman. ALSO, some women in her generation overcompensated for some lazy chauvinists.

Did Martha Stewart get famous for cooking?
I always thought it was more than that.

Either way,I agree they created a persona for themselves.

I think martha is SUPPOSEDLY a decorator type. It seems cooking is a minor part. She tried to act all high class, and then feign ignorance with the insider training.

She makes a LOT of money by just putting her name on stuff.

There is very little REAL news being reported anymore.
It's all turning to tabloid journalism.

The difference is that Martha Stewart is very well known. I have no interest in anything she does, but her name was very familiar to me before she got into trouble. I think many people are hearing Paula Deen's name for the first time in connection with this controversy.

That's true. The rock under which I live has internet service, but no cable cooking shows

I guess nowadays people all have access to different information. I was surprised on another thread that many people don't know who Kim Kardashian is. I'm certainly not a fan, but I wonder how anyone could avoid seeing her name.

I'm sure one can be perfectly happy and successful without being familiar with either Kim Kardashian or Paula Deen. From what I've heard of the latter, you might be healthier if you don't follow her recipes!

Perspective, I guess. I knew who she was and like some of her products. While not as well known or rich as Martha, she makes bucks...

Forgiven her? FOR WHAT!?!?!?!? The only thing *I* recall is the insider trading scandal. NOBODY likely forgave her for THAT! **I** didn't! So WHY doesn't anyone talk about that? There were THREE groups that are out there!

      1. NEVER FORGAVE her, because they NEVER held it against her! They didn't understand or care about it! This was BY FAR the largest group.
      2. NEVER FORGAVE her, because they NEVER held it against her! They didn't understand or care about it! They, like the media, spoke about it to further their cause.
      3. People like me just ended up feeling WORSE about her, and NEVER forgave. WHY forgive? She can't undo any damage, and I don't even think apologized.

        Forgave her for doing wrong.

Her actions did not affect me either way, but I did not feel she should get away with it.

Deen will rebound. Eventually. What I think is funny are sponsors who dropped her because she "represents" them that have their own skeletons - such as buying merchandise from overseas suppliers who use child labor, have their own employees sue for sexual/racial discrimination, etc.

    Can we say "hypocrisy"?

But Tim's right - this is how business is done. Odds are some of the very same sponsors who dropped her will eventually - and quietly - pick her back up at some point. After all, it's all about the bucks in the end.

Way Way blown out of proportion. By the News Media, The Public and the sponsors.

Being seen as PC in the Paula Deen use of the N word is another way for these sponsors to make more money from the minorities. I would have liked to have been the "fly on the wall" in these board meetings when the decision was made to fire her.

I do believe we will see her come back down the road and by some of the same brands that cancelled her contracts.
