Music Freelancing And The World Of Entitlement

Today, I came up with a brilliant idea. I love music. It's my life. It's been my life
for over 35 years. Maybe there are people out there looking for music projects,
maybe for a web site or whatever, who can't write themselves and need
somebody to compose music for them.

So I figured, what the heck. Let's go to Elance (yes, I know, a big mistake)
and see if there are any such jobs.

Relatively speaking, compared to other skills, there aren't a lot of jobs for
composers. But I found 2 that I can certainly handle.

But a third one that was certainly right up my alley, really made me laugh.

The guy is looking for somebody to write a killer hit song for him to submit to
a major label.

Price?

$15 or less.

That's right. For $15, he gets a killer hit song. Oh, he does say that if there
are any royalties we'll split them 50/50.

I wish there was a facepalm emoticon at this forum because I really need one.

The other 2 jobs weren't much better but they were better. Problem is, even
for jobs where they're willing to pay $500 for the job, you have people with,
supposedly, years and years of experience, bidding $15.

How in God's name do you compete with that?

And the sad part is, I am sure that most of these $15 bidders don't have a
spec of talent but this dumb schmuck is probably going to go with them
because they're all a bunch of "I want it now and I want it for nothing"
misers.

I'm sorry if my frustration is coming out more than it should but I really am
at the end of my rope. I am not looking for any handouts. My business is
pretty much non existent but I still want to make it on my own and work for
what I need.

So I have to ask. Is there ANYBODY in this world who will pay you what
you're worth or am I dreaming?

I don't want to become one of those "I Need Help Please Give Me Money"
threads because if nothing else I have my pride and will NEVER take a handout.

But for the love of God. Is a 55 year old skilled copywriter, songwriter,
article writer not worth more than $7 an hour working at a ******* Burger
King?

I'm starting to think the answer to that is a resounding and frustrating yes.

That reminds me of a job listing I recently came across for writing articles. The client specified that he wanted articles similar in tone and quality to The New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly magazines. The rate of pay being offered? 2 cents per word. I don't even know what writers for these magazines get these days, but I'm guessing it's in the neighborhood of 10x that.

It's really amazing what people expect for a few dollars nowadays.

fiverr is also full of similar requests: make an animated video, write songs, etc. And sadly, there are people who do those jobs for $5.

You may want to try posting an inexpensive ad somewhere in a trade publication aimed at stores, a certain industry, etc -- buyers are likely to be serious.
