Oh No. My Son Wants To Play Violin

I don't know how my son got the notion that he wants to play violin, but he has been insistent that he wants to play violin. The violin is one of those instruments that only sounds good if played pitch perfect, otherwise sounds singularly awful.

    Let him try it, TB.

He may just amaze you. He seems to be such a smart little boy on top of being adorable.

I agree with Terra. Let him give it a go. I thought the same thing when my boy wanted to play the trombone. He wasn't good at first, but now he's good. He's in the black band - one of the highest bands in school.

    And who doesn't love a band geek! : )

You can buy a used violin or the school might have some options.

      Exactly, Lori!

We cringed when my son wanted to play the flute, the french horn and the piano, but he accomplished them all. He plays by ear too!

That used to drive his grandma who teaches piano nuts! He wouldn't do his homework or practice because he said he could already do it! She wanted him to have the best of both worlds in playing by ear and reading music, but he just wanted to play by ear, lol!

  • It may be a temporary phase, however if serious for the long term, look into an electric violin. They are equipped with a headphone jack. eBay has tons of used ones.

Yes, very likely to be a passing phase, as is often the case with small kids' interests. I thought of the possibility of electric violin. It would take care of volume issues. But I need to consider safety issues -- I mean, there was a woman in China who got a fatal electrical shock from using a plugged-in iphone.

I understand your concern and being protective. I also have a young daughter with an interest in music. (I am a music business entrepreneur with a large inventory of music studio equipment and musical instruments.) Therefore for my own sanity It's probably best to trust that she won't die every time I let her play on any of my electric instruments that plug into head phones, etc. However I'll be avoiding letting her play with an iPhone while charging though.

Congratulations! Musical Instruments are great for the Mind!
Look how many big brains are here with a musical background.

My Son started on the Viola in the 5th Grade. He picked up the Guitar at 12. Got Serious and asked for formal lessons when he was 14. Became an Instructor @ 18. He has been supporting himself and paying his way through college (mostly) through Music.

Quiet bagpipes are an abomination before the Laird!

One of the most stirring sounds I've ever heard was a solo piper playing Amazing Grace. Gave lie to the old Scottish saying that "A gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes, but doesn't."

Still, at TB's son's age, sawing catgut is probably preferable to wrestling an octopus.

Hilarious saying. I guess that's why my Scottish friends who did claim to wear kilts on special events and be able to play bagpipes never did so in my presence (not complaining, lol)

          Yes they are Paul.
I'll admit I do love listening to bagpipes, but really prefer listening to Uilleann Pipes.

T-Bird here's where your son could end up with the violin

I suggest you support him (like what everybody else is recommending).

You don't know where that skill would take him.

Violin is a pretty decent instrument by the way. It would also enhance his posture. At least that's what every violin player is telling me.

Maybe he likes to "want" or is just considering various things as they appear and he learns about them?

Or - he likes a violin but wants a really big one?

My daughter made a similar request a couple Christmases ago and
I got her one thinking that she would soon give up but she kept
at it and taught herself how to play. She is now up to lesson
book 3 and plays pretty well. You never can tell.

Bagpipes and banjos do sound nice, when well played. They have their own distinct qualities. Never thought I'd be writing about bagpipes and banjos at the same time. Did the Picts play them or something?

I just had an odd audio experience. "Uncle Pen," Scottish style...

        That could work.

          I would encourage it, TB.

I paid for guitar lessons for my son. He ended up dropping guitar eventually and isn't pursuing music seriously, but he actually learned how to play pretty well. And it certainly didn't hurt him and kept him occupied and his brain working so that is a heck of a lot better than having nothing to do and getting in trouble because of it, I would think, eh?

Good point. I studied classical guitar as a teen and was really untalented at it, but I believe I still benefited from it.

You have a very talented family. What do you attribute to that? I like how you seem to have just let her play it as she pleases, enjoying it, rather than subjecting her to "tiger-parenting" drills. It seems that people are basically born that way, but a good family provides an environment that allows the talent to flourish. I was just reading this article: Maybe it might it interest you: What Genius and Autism Have in Common

In my son's case, he's hitting the milestones at the usual pace. He does have a good sense of musical notes, but I don't see obvious signs of him being a little Mozart, lol. He does not stand out from other kids his age in any really obvious way, except seeming to be friendlier than most of the other kids, and more "experimental." He's very observant and would make a good detective (not that I want him to be one). The main thing is I want him to be happy. I don't care if he's super-accomplished or not. No "tiger-parenting" from me. I want a happy child.
