What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Yep, l know all about that one, the Mars image below is a more accurate representation, (Hubble, 1997 image) by the way.

The organizer knows that NASA is BS about the radiation being a insurmountable issue for humans, to get there, and most likely also knows that Mars is a lot more hospitable to us than meets the eye.

He is also launching a rover there in the next few years, which should open humanity's eyes as to what is really there!

      Can't wait!!!:p

    Wow!

Thought it might be a joke until:
    Suppliers - Mars One

It would depend who else is going - chemistry and experience wise.

    Pets would be cool.

      Count me out.

I much prefer being referred to as an earthling as opposed to a martian.

Hmmm, probably best to land in Curiosity's area, or Mount sharp, l am sure Google or even NASA could supply that?

But don't jump the gun, he has to find a suitable landing site first, (he should be landing a rover on Mars in a few years time) to find a suitable site.

Don't want to land an oversized dishwasher on top of a sacred monument, and start an interplanetary war???

I can see the newspaper headlines, "intelligent life on Mars, but unfortunately we have started a war with them"!

We will be getting Martian nature specials for a few hundred years, no doubt with an average 2 or 3 billion per view?

And find out they have bought a few of our dinosaurs to life up there as well?

        LOL! Shane

PS Don't worry Claude, l am joking, well pretty much!

Oh come on!! They were counting on you going.

Now they will have to re-write the entire first paragraph of the Martian Holy Scriptures which currently reads:

        In the beginning,

from a distant planet came a gorgeous creature named Terra,

whom cleansed the planets atmosphere with her beauty,

and the Gods saw that it was good,

and so the term Terraforming was born.

Mars One plans to establish the first human settlement on Mars. According to their schedule, the first crew of four astronauts would arrive on Mars in 2023, after a seven month journey from Earth. Further teams would join their settlement every two years, with the intention that by 2033 there would be over twenty people living and working on Mars. The astronaut selection process began on April 22, 2013.[27]
As of April 2013, the mission plan is as follows:
2013: a replica of the settlement will be built for training purposes.
2014: The first communication satellite will be produced.

So, we have 5 more months to see the replica built for training purposes.
Have they raised the money for the land yet?
            How goes the construction?

And next year they will have built their first communications satellite? Really?

I don't put anything past the Dutch. Having grown up there and being educated there, I am well aware of the Dutch creativity and technologies that have changed the world, and the capabilities to pull of huge projects that at first glance seem almost impossible. Here is an interesting list of "firsts" by the Dutch.

This it True. However, even if for whatever reasons the current plans don't pan out according to schedule, they still get my A for effort in attempting to materialize such an undertaking.

I'll give them an A for imagination and desire. I think the effort is genuine.

But we don't even have a permanent facility on the Moon, let alone Mars.

The ambition just seems out of touch.

Terraforming the moon would probably be a much larger undertaking, even though it's closer to home. Even Nasa usually refers to other planets when considering the concept, as opposed to the moon.

I agree with what you say, but I wasn't talking about terraforming. I mean we don't even have a basic structure..a single room on the Moon that we can stay in.

Does anyone know how much this would cost? The expertise involved? The contracting? It would be one of the biggest projects on the planet. How much does it cost to send one ounce to Mars? One pound?

From what it appears, the main challenge is the funding required. Approx: Six Billion US dollars on average. As with everything else on this planet, Money makes the world go round, and in this case, I fully believe that Money will take us to Mars.

Eventually people will have to get out of the "is this even possible?" mode. Technology will probably improve as well over the years, so what seems tricky to accomplish today, may not be so difficult in a few years from now.

                            FAQ - Mars One
I'm sorry. I spent some time on their website.

Are we going to Mars? Maybe. Maybe even in the next 100 years. Maybe in the next 30 years. Maybe a tad sooner.

These guys have no idea what they are doing. They are visionaries with a dream. They have no money, no expertise. They are dreamers. And I don't mean it like "Dreamers make dreams come true". I mean like delusional dreamers.

Is there any evidence, anywhere on Earth, that these guys have even started building their first project? The "Replica of the settlement for training purposes"?

Have they even bought the land to put it on?

Is there anything at all except a website? Surely a photo, a video of the actual (not proposed) construction. Anything?

Wait; Do you work for these guys?

Yes, maybe a tad sooner. We currently have technology roaming around on Mars.
From here, putting humans on Mars should not be that big of a leap.

These guys have no idea what they are doing.
That may be so, I don't know this. But that's because I am not qualified to make that statement, are you?

Maybe these guys can answer that question.

                              Advisers - Mars One

They are visionaries with a dream.
                              This is true!

They have no money, no expertise.
I don't know of any start up / company that fully runs on their own money, expertise, and technology etc. Do you?

I do know that most companies (owners) start with visions and a dream. The rest is usually acquired through hiring people and securing contracts with entities such as tech companies etc that fill in the missing blanks.

They are dreamers. And I don't mean it like "Dreamers make dreams come true". I mean like delusional dreamers.
When Columbus sailed the ocean and reached his destination he killed, raped and enslaved innocent natives. He was also referred to as a cruel, self-centered, delusional man by many.

I am sure glad however that someone decided to open up their mind and take a trip around the world way back when. Otherwise we would have still been thinking that we lived on a pancake, and possibly fall off if we came too close to the edge. Thank God for delusional dreamers.

Is there any evidence, anywhere on Earth, that these guys have even started building their first project? The "Replica of the settlement for training purposes"? Have they even bought the land to put it on?
                              I don't know, I don't know, and I don't know.

But that does not mean the proposed project is not going to work or happen.

                              Does it?

Is there anything at all except a website? Surely a photo, a video of the actual (not proposed) constructing. Anything?
I don't know. But I do know that investors have been known to pump Millions if not Billions of dollars into a simple stack of documents that only include some stats and some numbers A.K.A, a Business Plan. Personally, I would prefer seeing an informative website that has around 80,000 applicants so far.

Wait; Do you work for these guys?
If I did, I'd be very proud.

To me it seems a huge leap to go from putting mechanical equipment on a planet to putting humans there in a way that is life sustaining and lasting.

It's not a big leap because we are already able to send an object from Earth to Mars, and we are able to land this object on Mars, and have it roam around. By doing so, this part of the plan is not considered to be Science Fiction anymore as the atmosphere did not kill it, destroy it, melt it, etc.

Thus the goal now is to overcome the numerous technical challenges that are involved when inserting a human into the equation, and getting a human there safely, and allowing a human to "settle in" safely so to speak. Will that be tricky? Probably.

However, even skeptics and opponents to this proposition say that it may be possible "some time in the future", but not right now. The Dutch however are usually ahead of their time by a few decades. So let's see what happens.

The Mars rover cost $800,000,000 to launch and put on Mars. Sending a Biosphere and humans would cost Billions. How many, I don't know. Like you said, there are technical issues for putting humans on Mars.
But a Bioshere type structure....and humans are far far more difficult to get there. And will be far more expensive.

And the first two Biospheres were a failure. And that was just a couple of years ago. So far, No biosphere has ever sustained life by itself. Maybe someone will figure it out.

But I see no evidence...not even a shred...that these guys are the ones who will get us there.

There is a huge difference. Columbus actually had a ship. He actually set sail.
That's light years ahead of these guys. If these guys had built anything...anything at all..I would take them seriously. If they had any progress (besides selling tickets) it would deserve another look. But this is a fantasy. Yes, Dreamers accomplish great things. But to accomplish these things they have to do something. They have to build something. And I see none of that...and I've wasted time scouring the news looking for any sign of activity beyond the website.

Want to convince me? Show a video of real construction going on. Not animated..not a proposal..but something really happening. Anything. I'll take anything. Wouldn't their website have photos of construction? progress? Milestones being met?

But I've done Google searches...and nothing. I wanted this to be true. Maybe more than you.

Hey Claude, thanks for discussing this with me. I am totally with you on your views, and I am definitely not disputing that this plan will be a heck of a challenge. I also want this to work, and think that we'll go to Mars.

The only difference I have with you at this point is that I do believe that from all the proposals I have seen in the last years, these guys are the ones that can possibly make it happen.

They will however need the funding in order to finance everything, and most importantly, support of the public. The project is moving forward either way, no matter the forum chatter, no matter the nay sayers.

The project may seem way out there when considering current accomplishments thus far that has not involved a human on Mars, but I guess that's why I'm proud of having been raised and educated in the Netherlands. The culture is one of exploration of ideas, (as crazy as they may seem) and one of survival. It comes natural living below sea level and all.

Really?

These guys must be incredible fast..and ....
No, not really he could just built a prebuilt satellite, from off the shelf components, Mars express, had a second satellite built, (European Express if l remember correctly) from the first ones spare parts, so it would be quick and cheap!

As others have said as long as he has the launch date set in stone and paid for, not a problem.

Hopefully it will include cameras as well, but l will have to wait and see.

Considering Mars doesn't have a life sustainable atmosphere, I feel sorry for the candidates who do eventually get sent out! I have a feeling carrying a huge oxygen tank around with them will be a strain and a half - and I have a feeling that they will eventually run out of it! I also hope they have enough money to build a rocket that can carry enough fuel for the journey, considering there won't be many opportunities to park up at a garage on the way.

It's probably best to research the overall concept of the plan(s), the current atmospheric conditions, the long term future goals for the planet, and the people involved. The applicants who apply obviously feel that they would rather contribute to that project, than staying here.

To me we should take these resources and invest them in rebuilding the United States of America let alone sending people to Mars

don't get me wrong it all sounds cool and all.. and I love technology

but we cannot even manage ourselves here on this planet.

what would be the point in doing this?? morale??

because its there??? like climbing mount Everest?? one of the scientists stated this would be the biggest media event in history... so what ......another realty TV show like the Truman movie???

geeez for that kind of mental investment and $$$ cure cancer for godsake!!!

or maybe there is already is a cure that is being suppressed by the establishment LOL

now if there was the possibility of Dilithium crystals http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilithium_(Star_Trek) being discovered.. thats a whole nother story!!!

Arnold, going from placing an "object" there and creating a life supporting environment is what I'd call a big leap. I'm not saying it couldn't be done . . . in time, but it's a fantastic leap.

Arnold sure has a great attitude with people that disagee with him.

I believe the next type of space missions will be mining asteroids that are headed towards Earth.

James Cameron and the Google Guys, Page and Schmidt, are already involved.

My reasoning is, this can be extremely profitable, and money makes the world go 'round.

"Our primary business is looking at these asteroids as a resource to benefit humanity, with three major value propositions," he said. "The first is many of these asteroids are rich in water, and water is valuable for hydrogen and oxygen, which is effectively rocket fuel. A 75-meter asteroid, if it's rich in volatiles, has enough water on board to fuel all 135 Space Shuttle missions."

The second category is platinum group metal-rich asteroids. "A single 500-meter LL chondrite has more platinum on it than has been mined in the history of humanity," he said. "Our goal is to go to asteroids, match their orbit, prospect them with cameras and imaging systems to clearly identify what they're made of, and determine the percentage of platinum and gold palladium."

Alright, alright... Some good points here and some points not so well thought out.

      So here's my take:

Not if it takes 1 cent of my money!

I am damn tired of the "That's and awesome idea. Let's spend Ga-Zillions of other people's dollars and try it!" club.

You want to go to Mars, fine. You put your ass (and you dog's) on a bike and start pedaling. Want me to pay for it? Not happening.

      Have a great day.

I think the only plausible way to have a truly life bearing planet other than something that is a short term tourist attraction will be their ability to build an atmosphere. Is there a good electro-magnetic force like that of the earth? They may be able to set up "domes" all over the planet - build atmospheres within, then when they get enough "air", shoot a layer of ozone over the planet and cut the domes open. I don't see any planet being truly habitable as long as the denizens are trapped under domes. If they can construct an atmosphere, that's different.

As far as other worlds that are inhabitable - I go with Europa (Jupiter's moon) before Mars for real survivability. The temperature would be much more friendly to our earthly life forms (Jupiter just missed being a star by a little mass, and it does put out some of its own heat). I've seen enough of those pictures to recognize silica based rock (read: agate, jasper, opal) to really, really want to go there to do some rock and gem fieldwork. LOL. Can't imagine living under a dome though. That's the same as a cage in my mind.
