Heard about this just last night. Very sad.

Details of the man and his career are surely not as known to me as to some. Suffice to say, perhaps, that he was a musical legend held in the very highest regard, personally and professionally, by legions of recording artists and fans alike. I'm among the latter.

He did it, it seems, for all the right reasons.

I'm often surprised by the number of music fans oblivious to the fact that some of their all-time favourite records are his.

And while I realise the hits are just scratching the surface of his discography, to me they have at times served as a sort of litmus test of character and temperament. There is something in the subtlety and purity of his work that riles the gracelessly ostentatious as it touches and endears the calm and good natured.

There were few like him, and I reckon that in an industry -- and society generally -- of increasing narcissism, we'll see even less of his type yet.
