So, I've been kinda interested recently in the whole low-carb/high protein vs high carb/low fat diets, partly because I have something called pre-diabetes, and party just because I'm interested in it.

I've been reading articles, book reviews, etc and this is what I've discovered about the current state of research:

Doctor: "Cholesterol and high protein are bad for you. You should stick to primarily fruits and vegetables."
Critics: "You work for PETA!"
Doctor: "No I don't."
Critics: "Yes you do."
Doctor: "No I don't."
Critics: "Yes you do."
Doctor: "No I don't."
Critics: "Yes you do."

Doctor: "High carb diets lead to diabetes. Eat lots of protein and fat, and skip the carbs."
Critics: "You work for the fast food industry!"
Doctor: "No I don't."
Critics: "Yes you do."
Doctor: "No I don't."
Critics: "Yes you do."
Doctor: "No I don't."
Critics: "Yes you do."

AAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!! I honestly don't have the slightest idea who to believe! Generally on science topics I can suss out who is doing real science and who is cherry picking data to support an ideology, but this has me quite stumped.

What do you think?

Go with low carb, since low fat won't do anything for you. You need fat to have a healthy hormone household. Plus to get rid of something you need to make the body believe that you are having enough of it.

From what I read certain vitamins need fat to be absorbed.

So,you need essential oils.Olive, flax, grape seed etc. Avoid canola.
Eat plenty of veggies.Stay out of Fast food joints if possible.

Secret is simple "balanced" diet, moderate or eliminate the crap/junk foods.
Actually diets are short term. Make a "livestyle" change permanently to healthy food choices.

Follow a mediterranean diet for it is a good one to use as a base to grow from.
    Exercise.DO IT.
Some people gain fat due to low metabolism so, boost it.

Consistently follow a moderate fitness program and you will see it go up.
Take stairs instead of elevators, walk to the store if close.

Iodine shortage can cause lowing. Somehow connected to thyroid.

Do a SERIOUS review of your eating habits.NOW.
Addictions to junk food? STOP it.
    Diabetes sucks big time!
Do some thing immediately to improve your diet.
    Good luck.

I have read plenty of debates on which is better. Balanced is the key. You should really search the glycemic index. Low glycemic foods will work wonders for you. Do a little research on that subject. You will learn how they have an effect on your insulin level.

You forgot about calories. You have to burn off more calories than you take in to lose weight no matter if it's low carb, low fat, low or no whatever. You have to burn off 3500 more calories than you take in to lose 1 lb. of fat.

You need carbs for energy, but I think the whole low/no carbs thing goes too far. Carbs are not bad. If you have way too much, only then is it bad.

Forget about those specific diets like the Atkins diet and just stick to common knowledge. Get your veggies and fruits in. Eat a balanced diet. Don't worry over carbs. If you want a dinner roll, have a dinner roll, don't worry about cutting out all breads, pastas, and everything with carbs. As long as it's balanced, you'll be all right, low carbs or not. You do need protein, don't worry about a protein overdose. But don't eat too much meat, especially red meat and pork.

And if you can stay away from high fructose corn syrup. Bad stuff, but you'd be surprised how many food items have that stuff in it. Even most jams and jellies, all the big names like Smuckers. Read labels and find the ones without high fructose corn syrup. The local kinds and natural kinds of jams/jellies is the kind with only like 3 ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup.

It can be confusing but learn about nutrition from an unbiased source, not from one promoting a certain diet. You don't need a diet, just stay balanced.
