      Same reason miserable political leaders are perpetuated - people refuse to see how things really are but, rather, how they WANT them to be until they are hit in the face over and over again by reality.

      People also seem to enforce the idea on others that they are not okay unless they are paired up. You wouldn't believe the crap people say to me about me being single. The predominant feeling seems to be to quit being fussy and just settle for someone for the soul reason of being a pair. You wouldn't believe the losers people try to match me up with then how furious they are because I'm not interested. It's crazy.
