Duh - people grow it.

Its like taxing prostitution - what are you going to do monitor every time somebody has sex ?

All this does is increase drug use - or prostitution in that case.

DEBATE !!!

To me, the sad (and unbelievable) thing is that "the legalization of marijuana" is being proposed as the solution to our nation's economic problems. Riiiiiiight. Legalizing marijuana is going to make things all better; give me a break.

Don't take such a narrow view.
As with 99% of everyone who hears about this they just think of marijuana and not hemp.
I'm not saying it's the solution to our economic problems, but legalization would have a major impact on it.
In fact lets forget about hemp for a second and consider this, illegal marijuana is the largest cash crop in the U.S.
This report is 3 years old, but you get the idea,
Contrasting government figures for traditional crops -- like corn and wheat -- against the study's projections for marijuana production, the report cites marijuana as the top cash crop in 12 states and among the top three cash crops in 30.
The study estimates that marijuana production, at a value of $35.8 billion, exceeds the combined value of corn ($23.3 billion) and wheat ($7.5 billion).

Marijuana Called Top U.S. Cash Crop - ABC News
And that's after the government wastes millions trying to eradicate it.
Plus when you consider we don't export herb you know there are a whole mess of Americans smoking.
So the growers pay a tax (plus income tax) the middle man pays a tax, and the user pays a tax. That's a lot of tax money there.
Then you have the jobs created growing hemp or marijuana, and the jobs processing it. Then with hemp you have the additional jobs created converting it from hemp to whatever you are using it for.
Yep legalization could go a long way in helping the economy.

I think it could help also cause law enforcement to tackle the true problems in america. Help with over crowed prisons. Even people with serious health problems that need marijuana to live a happy life. The economy is screwed why not. at least people can smoke when they lose there jobs.

So you don't think the places that provide legal prostition in Nevada pay taxes?

If it is legal and becomes available in stores, just like alcohol, it can be regulated and taxed.

I live in Kentucky and I can tell you if they legalize it we will be the richest state in the union. There are some country roads near where I live that you don't drive on between say May and September. These farmers around here don't grow it they cultivate it.

Last time I was in Key West I ran into a Kentucky farmer, real interesting person, and I left with much respect for the man.
You realize Dave that at one time Kentucky was the largest hemp producing state in the union?

I can't remember where I heard it (CNN?) but someone said it should be legalized and taxed $50 per ounce.

Uh, that's enough to make me just keep growing my own! $50 tax on every ounce? OW! What do they think it is, tobacco?!

I can make my own alcohol, too, but do I? No, it's too much bother. If cannabis was legal, and not too heavily-taxed, I'd just go to the store and buy it.

Legalizing cannabis while keeping the other drugs illegal will allow the DEA to continue making money from their 'war' on drugs and keep people employed.

And might I add, those who believe marijuana (cannabis) is so terrible, a 'gateway drug', or who believe the government propaganda such as Reefer Madness, are the very same people who know not of which they speak. Most of them have never smoked it and do not actually know the effects of it on themselves personally, yet they are more than happy to force their opinions, based on inaccurate information at the best, upon everyone else.

Why do our esteemed lawmakers come to mind?

      ARSE !!!!

If you knew how much weed I used to smoke as a teen you would puke.

I'm 100% opposed to it. Also prostitution got legalized here a few years back.

There are now unlicensed brothels everywhere.

You cant just grow a bottle of beer or scotch but you can just grow an few hundred ounces of weed and smoke it without paying any tax.

      California must be fUBaR.

Mind you if they legalize prostitution is CA I will come for a holiday and shag all the porn actresses.

Prostitution actually IS legal in California and taxed just like any other business. We just call it by different names. When you come here for your holiday, just look in the yellow pages for "Escort Services" or "Massage". But don't mention the word "shag" around these parts, or you're more likely to get steam cleaned and vacuumed.

That should be BILLIONS. Of course we still have a lot of self-righteous, pig headed people who also don't realize how 20 years in a corporate prison system is crewl and unusual punishment for an adult who made a choice to smoke a joint. I wish we had prisons for people who insist on dictating their ways on everyone else - especially when the only info they have is from 30 year old gov propeganda.

I can't imagine growing my own pot. I struggle at the effort to grow my own tomatoes and home grown tomatoes are my favorite thing in the whole world -along with raspberries. So if it were legal, and I wanted a smoke, I'd be going to the store, not the backyard.

That's what they are proposing in the Cali. legislation.
I think the tax should and probably will be more like a sales tax and based on a percentage like 9%.
Another consideration is it would end the swag coming in from Mexico and really hurt if not end the Mexican drug cartels.
      That should be BILLIONS.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger just said today in a news conference "I think all of those ideas of creating extra revenues, I'm always for an open debate on it. And I think we ought to study very carefully what other countries are doing that have legalized marijuana and other drugs ..."

Well Arnie did smoke at one time so he knows.
Regardless what any individual state decides, federal law still trumps it and the feds will just have a field day with any legalization.
But Obama has already told the DEA and the Attorney General not to supersede states that have medical marijuana laws on the books, that's 13 and counting by the way. It's not a big stretch to see the same thing apply to any states with full legalization. It's really the only way the feds can legalize and save face. Let the states do it and just don't interfere.

I don't think it will effect the cartels much, Thom, as they will just take their focus off of marijuana if we legalize it here in the states and boost their importation of other drugs to maintain their profits.

Have you ever heard of brothels? Why would anyone solicit sex on the street when they can enter a place of business and be certain the girls are tested and clean. And they DO pay taxes.

You never really know how much they will actually charge in the end; it is always negotiable. But you usually can get a pretty good deal with a chick that's hot if you've got some pot. Really, you're not paying a tax, you're paying a toll more or less.

You're paying to peacfully carry, transport and use a drug without fear of police kicking in your door or pulling you over.

Marijuana is technically legal and has been since 1937. It was made so by the marijuana tax stamp act of '37. The trick is, you have to have plant in hand to get a stamp, but you have to have a stamp to grow the plant.

Marijuana still causes things like emphezyma (sp?). You're breathing smoke. Lung tissue doesnt like any kind of smoke. But it (weed) has never been cited as the cause of any traffic accident in the u.s. and i cant remember the last time i heard of some guy smoking a j and beating his wife.

Holy SMOKE! The esteemedNew Zealand sheep-shagger called my an ARSE!!!

I have to tell you, Gareth, I really consider that to be an honor! Thank You!

Gareth, you may have misunderstood me. I wasn't referring to you when I wrote "And might I add, those who believe marijuana (cannabis) is so terrible, a 'gateway drug', or who believe the government propaganda such as Reefer Madness, are the very same people who know not of which they speak."

I was referring specifically to the lawmakers, not you, buddy.

But thanks for calling me an Arse. It's been awhile since someone did that and I was starting to get full of myself!

I think the lawmakers should consult with the authorities (Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong ) before making such decisions for the rest of us.

What does anyone else think here? Should we make Amy Winehouse the new U.S. Drug Czar?

I think this world would be a better place if we could all just take a break
    and get high for awhile.

Love and let love, and all that.
