What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Not sure how I feel about this. Guess I'll just have to wait and see how he does.

Tennant and Smith are tough acts to follow.

I hope the scripts pick up too, I lost interest last series.
Interestingly, both Peter Capaldi and Karen Gillan (pre-companion) were in the episode "The Fires of Pompeii".

Cautious optimism has always been my feeling when a new Doctor is announced. I enjoyed Chris Eccleston's Doctor, but really got into David Tennant's version. In fact, when Matt Smith was announced I was a bit ticked off; both because I had no idea who he was, and he didn't strike me as the Doctor type. So I let the cosmos handle it, and I ended up absolutely loving his interpretation of the part!

Peter Capaldi is a good actor, and I'm sure he will do a fine job. It's just hard to let go of the tried & true.

I somewhat remember that episode. I'll have to re-watch it
Every time they cast a new Doctor I say he can't be as good as the last one, and they always are. I'm looking forward to the new Doctor.

I have never seen this actor in anything (except that DR Who episode of course, and I think that is a good thing. Yes David and Matt are hard acts to follow BUT each new Doctor puts his unique stamp on the character when he regenerates so I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

Yes! You are so right too. This is good because it means he has an appreciation for the Doctor and Torchwood from an acting point of view already.

Wow! I haven't watched a Dr. Who episode since Tom Baker.

I'm in the states by the way where the show isn't as popular. The Brits as do most of you folks in the UK, have a contrastingly different sense of humor than that of your cousins in America.

I was introduced to Dr. Who by my counterparts when I spent a year as an Exchange Officer in the US Army in England in the 80's. I found the show quite entertaining, although my work at the time did not allow for much television.

Back in the States I found out that the show was aired on our own PBS (Public Broadcasting System) channels. I believe Tom Baker was already replaced at that time and the shows were re-runs. I didn't know that it was still being aired today.

Yep, l can relate to that, Tom baker had the best storeylines, etc. Obviously not the special effects?

This doc, might act his age, or be another crackhead, going after endless slimy creatures; if it is the latter l will probably switch off, and find the Tom Baker episodes online!

It's not actually a comedy anyway.

The original run was 1963-1989. There was a TV movie in 1996, and the show was revived in 2005.

I didn't mean to imply that it was a comedy, but you have to admit that the show, at least the episodes featuring Tom Baker (I am only vaguely familiar with a few of the other actors who portrayed Dr. Who), employ a rather peculiar sense of humor to say the least. Mr. Baker's bizarre behavior is really what attracted me to the show the first time I it was shown to me. I think he was hilarious!

I was pretty sure it was canceled some time ago, but I didn't know that is was resurrected in 2005, nor was I aware of a Movie. I will have to check as to whether it is still shown here in the U.S.

He's a good actor, and "quirky" enough to make a good Doctor Who, I think. (I really thought they might actually choose a woman, this time).

Doh! This the second time that I saw the title of the thread and thought, what, the Who have a new lineup? I should have remembered what this about after the first time I read it.

Having been out of the UK for some years now and not really followed up since Tom Baker. This announcement of Peter Capaldi taking over and stepping in the shoes of many passed actors of excellence, we shall just have to see what he can bring to the foe and I hope he really fits the bill
