      That was in the news a couple months ago - at least it shows someone actually thinks about an issue instead of simply parroting the same view over and over.

      To me, the issue over legalizing weed is overplayed. Each state can decide what the state's policy/law is and that will happen as the medical uses become apparent.. It's one of those issues people love to debate and argue about and I don't think it deserves the amount of attention it's getting.

      Let's face it - most people arguing for legalization aren't looking at medical benefits but at freedom to use a drug they enjoy.

        Which is funny, because if you watched the documentary you'd have seen that Gupta changed his mind after he admitted he pretty much "parroted" the DEA's info for many years, saying he took it at face value.

        IMO, it deserves more attention than it's getting. First, for the first time in history a majority of people (58%) in the US believe it should be legalized.

        Second, states legalizing MJ isn't that simplistic. For example, while it's now legal in Colorado, it's still against federal law. And this means that banks won't take money that comes from legal pot sales due to "money laundering" laws.

        This is forcing MJ dispencaries, and soon retail shops, to be "cash only", unable to use the banking system. This not only puts the MJ shops in more danger of being robbed, it also makes it harder for the gov to collect taxes, track inventory, etc.

        And, the Fed's response to the states' with legal MJ to basically leave them alone could change when the Admin changes.

        Let's face it - most people arguing for legalization aren't looking at medical benefits but at freedom to use a drug they enjoy.
        Some of us argue for legalization because of both MJ's legal benefits and its "side effects", as well as the burdon it puts on our legal system and the number of lives of young people this has ruined.

          I am for legalization for similar reasons, I think. I don't believe that MJ is harmless (Smoking lowers IQ?), but it does offer medical benefits and an impressive range of other uses. It's legalization would help put an end to the ugly and gruesomely violent organized crime related to its trafficking. Also, it is totally ridiculous to destroy lives with harsh legal punishment merely for possessing the stuff or growing a few plants.

            These are all among my reasons for being pro-legalization, too.

            I'm also too logical, evidence-influenced and scientific to imagine that it's "harmless", obviously (that's just "silly"), but I'm still in favor of legalization anyway.

            If either nicotine or alcohol were recent discoveries being researched now, it seems to me that there's almost no possibility at all that either would be given a product licence in any Western country.

            I'm not sure many serious organized crime rings are going to have all their stocks banked in cannabis. I'd assume it to be a sideline which they are more than prepared to ditch in their forecast of legalization.

                "Who is this Mary Jane, and why is a doctor on her in the first place, and what does she find uncomfortable about the position they are in?"

              Your assumption is incorrect. Mexican organized crime is associated with marijuana big time.

            Funny how legal authorities and people who don't want to legalize will talk about these "dangers" when Tylenol has more dangerous side effects after long term usage. Not to mention the countless other prescribed drugs whose side effects include death

            This is a total money issue. I guess there's more money in incarceration, etc. than there is in taxes from legal MJ sales.

              When politicians take on irrational stances supposedly on ideological grounds (usually a bogus fabrication), following the money often explains the real reason.
