Please tell me all about your ass.

My brother and I are saving money to buy a small ranch in a few years and we hope to rescue a few animals.

Donkeys are supposed to have great intelligence and are very sensitive and bond very well with humans. They also live for an average of 35 years and are easy to care for.

In my research, I've come across "guard donkeys" a few times and how great donkeys can be. It's seems donkeys are very protective of their territory and will protect other animals they have bonded with. While other animals will turn and run at the sight of a predator, donkeys will stay and fight, standing on their back legs and kicking with their front.

They are great protection against foxes, coyotes and bob cats, and will even bay loudly at human tresspassers.

I've read that to gain a horse's respect, you just need to prove you can be a leader. But to gain a donkey's respect, you have to earn its trust.

Anyone here ever had a donkey or know anything about them?

    I know enough to know they're harder animals than they look. I've not told many people this but a few months back I was walking my dogs. I was staying at a very rural location and was walking them through some fields. As I walked I saw a donkey walking towards us.

    With no warning he jumped up, kicked and tried to bite me. I punched it hard in the face and all it did was make him angry. He bit one of my dogs on the back end really hard and began trampling the other who was lying down in terror.

    Awful as it sounds I had to pick up a lump of wood and beat the animal off. Both of my dogs are big dogs too and they were clueless what to do.

    Point is, I fully understand how they can become gaurd donkeys. I didn't let go of the lump of wood until I was clear of the field and the donkey stayed close at all times until we'd gone. I wouldn't mind but it was a public bloody footpath.

        Just as a caveat, I'm not saying all donkeys are lunes. Just that particular one but I'm sure he had a reason and it just would have been better had I been walking elsewhere at the time. They're very smart and they're not scared either. Very nice animals though.

        There. I don't want anyone thinking I'm a donkey hater. Far from it, my experience made me respect the little blighter a great deal. I don't think my dogs would agree though.

        Football hooligan donkey wasn't that little either, for the record.

    Another good thing about donkeys is that they are very efficient eaters. A donkey only needs to eat about 1 - 1.5% of its weight daily. A horse needs to eat 2 - 2.5% of its body weight.

    The neighbors had a donkey when I was a kid. He took to us pretty well and had a pretty kewl personality. He was a gentle animal with us kids. There were a few teenage boys that it would take off after now and again, but they probably deserved it - he never hurt anyone seriously, though.

    Anyway - I like the little guys. They're pretty kewl people.

    As far as the Donkey attacking you, Richard. Was it possible there was something hurt laying in some bushes or behind a tree that it was trying to keep you and your dogs away from?
