That would be judge Dipsh^t, imposing her religious views on other people through the misuse of her office.

Totally illegal and unconstitutional. Grounds for dismissal in my opinion.

The boy's parents were in court because they could not agree on the child's last name
Whole story sounds like dumb and dumber. Silly ruling -but if you take up a court's time because you can't agree on your own child's last name....you probably won't draw the brightest judge in the system.

Seems like common sense to me. It's like buying ice cream on a 100 degree day - it will not end well.

Jesus and Moses are just normal names. Just like Mohammed.

Messiah is something else. Like calling your son or daughter God. That would annoy some people. Especially in the US where you have this Bible Belt thing going on. Try calling your son Allah and see what would happen.

By the way I couldn't care less but I can see what the judge was thinking.

Kids going to get beaten up and bullied. Because that is exactly what would happen.

I think he'd be called "messy".

Never wanted to give a child a name he'd have to struggle to live up to or one that would embarrass him as an adult.

"Messiah" is a bad call for a name. That poor kid is going to have problems growing up. (Coming from a guy named "Claude")

But to tell parents what they can't name their kid...is silly in the extreme.

Ok, WHAT did they want as a last name? OF THE EARTH? OF THE WORLD? OF THE UNIVERSE? BESIDES, you KNOW is it is likely NOT a regular last name(paternal, maternal, or hyphenated related names), because he has two siblings!

And did anyone ask them the REAL reason why they wanted to name the kid messiah? GEE, I'm glad my name is taken to have only a relatively marginal mention in the bible.

And the mother and father go to COURT to decide?

I think the ACLU looks ridiculous chiming in on this one.

Two parents want a judge to decide what the LAST name of their child will be....but then say the judge has no right to decide the first name?

Sorry - but that's just stupid. They wanted a name - they got a name.

They couldn't agree on a last name because they obviously are not getting along since the case is in child support. The parents apparently had agreed on a first name, so the stupidity is actually by the judge and this decision should be over turned. The judge has no right inserting her religious views into the case.

Is not this ruling an affront to a bunch of basic American Freedoms?

I don't think the judges decision to strike the child's name should be endorsed - in any way - this craziness, it could become settled law and that would not be a good thing for the republic.

I don't think there are a lot of yearly events in the society that would invoke this situation but nevertheless the ruling shouldn't be allowed to stand.

            - It's quite Ok for the parents to use religious reasons to name their child but it's not cool for the judge to use their own religious reasoning to prevent it from happening.

I remember my brother in law suggesting that Jerry Falwell would dominate things up in my neck of the woods, I laughed and said "not around here" maybe down there near his headquarters - but not around here" (Montgomery County Md.)

So go for it ACLU go for it - I'm curious to see how long the ruling lasts.

Will it end up in the SCOTUS?

Will SCOTUS leave it up to the states? (please don't)
