She has wowed children, and some adults, around the world with her blonde locks, slender legs and sweet smile.

But the latest makeover was not what they were expecting.

Barbie has been given a set of tattoos to celebrate her 50th birthday.

The doll's makers, Mattel, insist the move will bring Barbie and her brunette equivalent Nikki up to date, reported The Daily Mail.

The Sun reported that the new dolls hope to convey the message that girls can make Barbie look like their heroines.

The new Barbie dolls are part of Mattel's 'Totally Tattoos' range, and each will cost around £20 in toy stores and online sites.

I think this is not a good example especially among the children who is fond of Barbie. this would have an impact on them that having a tattoo is making them feel updated.I hope that the parents will guide their children.

I fully agree. This is absolutely a bad example!

I don't understand... you like tattoos, you have tattoos but you think tattoos are bad? a tattooed doll is a bad example? what about ourselves? we all love tattoos, we have some and we don't give a shit what kind of example we are giving. I think we should all make up our mind - either we love tattoos or we don't. We cannot ask Mattel to give good examples for us. I like to think that my tattoos don't harm anybody, are nice to see, say something about me and mean a lot to me. that's all.

Oh PUH-Leazze! An adult decision to have a tattoo is one thing but encouraging a nine-year old kid (the last age a girl would be interested in dolls) to emulate this icon is as bad as the "hooker" dolls with their thongs! We as a society have lost it. Next generation, you have got your hands full with your kids' choices of rebellion...
    Good for you, eSem...
As for moelk who " doesn't give a shit about what example we are setting"---you obviously don't have a child of your own. It's not the benign-ness of the act itself, it is the overall relaxation of judgment of what is appropriate for what ages. Tattoo love is not appropriate to promote to children this young. The tattoo is not the threat--the drop in the boundaries of what is appropriate is the issue, so don't get personal and defend your tats--you have the right to have them if you are over the age of consent to get one (or your parents also "don't give a shit" about the example they set for their child.)
Come on Mattel, surely you haven't run out of ideas to sell toys that are for KIDS not "little adults".

Hi Julia, I respect your position, but I was just trying to say that you should either be pro or against tattoos. There should be no in-between. When you get a tattoo you are making a choice: you choose to adhere to a kind of society which accepts tattoos. Barbie is a children toy, but it represents an adult woman. There's nothing bad about an adult woman wearing a tattoo. It's common and that makes this toy realistic.
I assume you don't have a tattoo, and I respect your position. But, if I want to live in a society where tattoos are freely accepted, than I won't criticize anybody promoting tattoos. Children are to be respected and protected, but if I don't see any harm in tattoos, what should I protect them from?

lol barbie with a tramp stamp.

While i might not agree with this completely I do have some thoughts. Some people find tattoos more socially acceptable. But at that age kids are a bit sensitive.

What about removable tattoos for kids? Should those be banned too?

If they want to market tattoo barbies perhaps they should do it as an adult version as I think a lot of parents would be upset and not always pay attention to these sort of things.

What is next? Ken with a pack of Marb Reds or Camels?

I am on the line as I think companies should have the option to put these things out , but it lacks taste.

I'll have to give it a thumbs down overall.

puhlease...3/4 of the mothers of girls that are at the age to play with barbies have a tramp stamp, barbed wire on their bicep, something on their ankle..etc..etc. Its not like tattoos are something super secret that only sailors get any more.

Just wait until Tongue Ring barbie hits the market next year, followed by Pierced Ear Ken with the optional Prince Albert

It's a good thing I had sons. I would never allow a daughter to OWN any barbie doll - she'd just have to feel deprived.

Tattoo parlors ask that you be 18yrs old to get one, an adult decision. There's nothing wrong with tattoos but not on a toy. It's very tacky.

So let me make sure i understand correctly. Giving a little girl a barbie doll that has for years been the target of women's rights group for promoting a body image that no real woman can possibly meet, and a career that apparently is either a stripper, high end call girl, or having ken as a sugar daddy (she doesnt have a job, but has a corvette, mobile home and loads of other expensive toys) is ok, even though 90% of the women in the world dont and never will look like that, and would get thrown in jail or atleast audited for not having a job but having all those high end toys thats ok......, but if she's got a tattoo which a large portion of the female population has...thats bad?
