Quinoa, mushrooms and coca: Bolivian says ancient Andean diet has kept him alive for 123 years - World News

FRASQUIA, Bolivia -- Bolivian indigenous farmer Carmelo Flores, who could be the oldest person to have ever lived, attributes his longevity to quinoa grains, riverside mushrooms and around-the-clock chewing of coca leaves.

Speaking in the 4,000-meter high hamlet where he lives in a straw-roofed hut, Flores says the traditional Andean diet has kept him alive for 123 years.

"Potatoes with quinoa are delicious," said Flores in Aymara, the only language the nearly deaf man speaks.

It is impossible to verify Flores' age as the poor, landlocked South American country only started issuing official birth certificates in 1940.

But he says his baptism certificate lists his birthday as July 16, 1890 and he has national identity documents based on the certificate.

Bolivia's Civil Registry Office says it is looking into the validity of the documents and cannot comment until the investigation is completed.

Still, many in Bolivia are already celebrating Flores' longevity. A local government official plans to award him the title of "Living Heritage of Humanity" on August 26.

Try eating an Oak Tree next time you're feeling hungry.

Call me a skepchick, but isn't it a remarkable coincidence that all these really extreme longevity reports just happen to come from countries/regions/times when there were no officially recognized birth certificates?

Be careful with those wild mushrooms. I don't want to worry you, but a lot of people died after eating them.

Yeah my sentence wasnt properly created but what I meant is that nature provides us things that we can eat and from these things we even make medication. As far as i know, fruits come from nature for example

Maybe they have birth certificates but refuse to show them to anyone.

Those people "without birth certificate" or whose age is calculated according to calendars that differ from western calendars, are likely to have a very basic diet which is the best favour that you can do to your body.
I am inclined to believe that at least some claims are real.
One can of course choose to fatten up the body and patch up the arising health issues with medicines, which in turn will poison the system.

But they can always cut off an arm and count the rings to verify their age.
Oh wait, that's trees. Never mind.

He's more than twice my age and has more hair on his head than I do. Life just isn't fair sometimes.

They keep calling different people "the oldest". There's a region of Russia that generally has longevity wrapped up. Or did around 20 years ago - Many of them lived up to or beyond 124. They were probably the last of the line to be raised for most of those lives in a pristine environment, too Not only would all the oldest be dead by now, I'm sure they are reaping some sort of effects of pollution, so they're probably only living to 110 tops by now. 2 of my relatives did.

The lifestyle we have differs so much from theirs that's why people say that kids in this generation will have a shorter life span.
