Have you ever been Stereotyped?

Offline, people assume certain things about us including our character, financial situation, etc,
mainly due to the way we dress, how we talk, our physical appearance, the car we drive...

Online, because of a lack of biographical information available on us, people often tend to draw their own conclusions based on a sales page, or our presence on this forum, etc.

I was inspired to post a related question here today as last night I was taking a walk
wearing a Bob Marley T shirt.

Two young ladies walked by and said: "hey, we like your shirt"...
immediately followed by... "do you have any weed?"

Now even though I fail to see the connection I doubt this would have happened if I was wearing a suit and tie.

Have you, or someone you know ever been stereotyped in a similar way?

When I'm speaking in front of groups, most people in the audience see me as a middle aged balding business guy from the big city, that's there to smooth talk them into giving me thousands of dollars of their hard earned money..and that this is the only reason I'm there.

They are completely wrong. I'm a middle aged balding business guy from a small town, that's there to smooth talk them into giving me thousands of dollars of their hard earned money..and that this is the only reason I'm there.

    Big difference.

    This post was a joke.

      Every day
People look at me and think I'm some violent drug crazed biker.
In reality though I do ride a motorcycle, I only smoke cannabis and am one of the most peaceful non-violent people you will meet.
Conservatives call me a liberal, liberals call me a conservative, I'm really neither.
I could go on, but you get the point.

Thom - come on. You're peaceable because people are scared to f*** with you.

I've been called "hippy" in my younger years - and "conspiracy theorist (read: tinfoil hat nutbag - which doesn't bother me because am later proved right more often than wrong).

NOBODY has ever called me a "typical woman", though.

ALL THE TIME! MOST are 100% untrue, and the others may be as low as 20%!

For ALL SORTS of reasons. The car I drive is from a company that went bankrupt a year after it was made. It is about 12 years old. But it DOES have a lot of pep, and is a 6 cylinder car with about twice the average displacement. So I am OK with it. It is the first used car I ever bought.

I dress like I am middle/middle class at best, and my banker was happily surprised when I revealed I had far more than the $5000 I keep there. She wants me to put all my eggs in HER basket! NOTE to foreigners....To put all of ones eggs in a basket is a popular saying that merely means you put all your items in one place and they could all be lost at once. Put all my assets in ONE bank? ****STUPID****! Besides, I have assets and needs that THEY don't support!

As for politics? WOW, people really twist that all over.

Soccer mom has nothing to do with soccer. A soccer mom is one that generally drives a van, takes their kids to sport events, that the kids play in, and really gets into it. I guess soccer was the sport they picked on when naming it.

WHAT connection? I could see how they might, in two or three steps figure it is POSSIBLE, but it is a STEREOTYPE! It would be like seeing an old weather worn guy and asking where the nearest cajun place is. BESIDES, it means LITTLE with the culture, at least in the US. They may have the t shirt that has the leaf structure(whatever that is called), and says weed, and STILL know nothing about it.

Many times... especially in front of employed people who holds managerial positions..
Here in Philippines, honestly, many are boastful... especially those people who are working in multinational companies...

Example one time, a long time friend and a former co-worker of invited me into his birthday party. I wear shorts and sleeveless most of the time and I went to his home for his party. He had several "high-profile" visitors from his company and he introduced me to them... We were around a big table with some BBQs and liquor (typical in Philippines).. Someone asked me where I am working. I said I'm self employed. Another asked me if my income is enough to support my family. I said "well sometimes"... then after that no one talked with me again and they continued chatting about their life style, work, hobbies, etc...

Another visitor arrived. My friend Alex asked me "mate, can you move your car a little bit so that another car can park"? All people stared at me after hearing that I have a car. I stood-up, went to parking lot, and moved my 2012 Honda Civic... All eyes pointed at me when I returned but no one dared to ask again how I make money for living... .. Those managers have cars provided by their company but can hardly afford to buy a used Toyota corolla..

They judged me for how I dressed...

BTW, I bought that car last year from a 6-month clickbank savings..

They made THAT little and they were so quick to judge you? Besides, when I see someone apparently making THAT much more than I do, I make it a point to slip in a question asking what THEY do, and of course tell them what I do. I don't IGNORE them.

BTW I have met PLENTY of people that looked like bums(DESCRIPTIVE PHRASE), and were rich. Most actually got the money THEMSELVES! I have ALSO met plenty of people that looked rich that were actually very poor. It is hard to judge that way. Today, there is likely not a thing you can do like that to be even 70% sure. The rich people have even been ones that did worth arbitrage(for want of another word), saved and invested, were a salesperson of an expensive or popular product, were purchasers, there was a drink manufacturer(Today one line of drinks he has is like all over the place, you probably won't find a store that doesn't have them, and his EMPLOYEES say he looks like a bum!), there was even a person managing shipments, and another that consults on transdermal technologies.

As for ME? I generally dress in dockers, short sleeve shirts, no tie, no suit, and dress shoes as plain as I can find. I may not be what I consider rich, but i'm not poor either. I guess I make a lot more than those guys that belittled you.

Heck, does THIS guy look like he is rich? http://www.microsoft.com/global/en-u...ates_print.jpg SURE he's got a nice haircut, and glasses, and a nice sweater, but I mean REALLY. I have seen MANY dressed that way that where not. HEY, THIS guy doesn't even look happy: http://www.biography.com/imported/im...0729-1-402.jpg He looks like some grumpy old farmer! He DOES like in oklahoma, and his son IS a farmer! OK, THOSE were easy! What about THIS guy? https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...cVs8BYy5CxH4FW One of the companies he cofounded is worth 4 billion USD.

Stereotyping is just mental shorthand. It allows us to form a picture of someone without complete information. We all do it. All of us.

Stereotypes are mostly accurate, or they would be called something else. Like "Prejudices" or "mistakes". A Stereotype is just a first impression.

Most people are pretty much like what you think of them after a couple of minutes of talking to them. I know I am.

I went to a school with a LOT of foreigners. I forget if it was armenians, iranians, or both were people that people said had sex with sheep. For the record, the religion, and I believe the culture, of BOTH even forbid it. Most armenians were christian, and the iranians were generally jewish.

I have sex with a goat one time!...and now I'm stuck with the label "Sheep seducer" for the rest of my life. It's an unfair stereotype based on one...one instance. And it was a goat, not a sheep. Jeesh!

I've been a Baaaaaaahhd (get it? Sheep..Baaaah) boy.

This post was a joke. No sheep were seduced in the making of this post. I hereby state that sleeping with sheep is wrong. Any color or gender of sheep.

            Update:

I now have been stereotyped and I was right, it is very entertaining.

I now am apparently a stressed out, freaked out lady tossed to and fro in the wind with every snippet of info I hear or see and encourage others to believe untruths and utter nonsense just because I asked opinions on something my daughter asked me about.

This really is blowing me away and is extremely entertaining at the same time.

"Technically it's NOT, *****BUT IT'S GOING TO BE*****!" That is VERY different from how the other guy did. I have to wonder if anything ELSE changed. The black DID act differently from the white. The people WERE different, and they couldn't simply switch thieves, as it would be tantamount to revealing the thing.

I wouldn't help the woman steal the bike, but it IS funny how men can be affected by women, even WITHOUT any thought of a relationship! And some women WILL take advantage in extreme ways!

Well, the white guy says "You wouldn't happen to know who's bike this is?" How is that VERY different?

I don't see the black guy acting much different. I see the people walking by acting a lot different and it's just because he is black, just like they actually help the pretty woman actually steal the bike because she is a pretty woman.
