Twerking to The Bank

Haters gonna hate.

The reality is that Miley Cyrus is simply re-branding herself from a cute kid to a grown woman who does whatever she wants.

Miley is still trending everywhere and i am willing to bet her record will sell through the roof and that we will see all sorts of collaborations and appearances.

  • So being raunchy is necessary to rebrand herself as grown up? Since when is that necessary? If that's true, I don't ever want to grow up.

In any event, we seem to have a pretty much anything you choose is okay now kind of thinking already instilled in society, so where's the shock value? I doubt older people who could be shocked are bothering to watch her and she's definitely a bad example for the younger generation.

    • That's part of it. To generate even more publicity a sex-tape will need to be released. It'll have to appear like it was done without her knowledge, with behind-the-scenes profit-sharing deals obfuscated (see P.H. or K.K.).

I'm not personally upset or shocked by Miley Cyrus's on-stage shenanigans. It's not like she was being violent or abusive, neglecting puppies, or something that is criminally insane. Yeah, she was getting publicity, probably positioning herself for her target markets (who apparently don't care so much about such minor factors as being off-pitch or whatever)
    • Like I said, haters gonna hate...

She's an entertainer, a dancer and a singer.... she just shook her money maker and is now cashing cheques!

  • I only rarely watch TV. I didn't even know what twerking was, so I had to Google it to find out. That turned up a video clip of her twerking I think at some MTV show or something. I must say, that's the most unimpressed I've been with an "entertainer" in a long time.

    • I guess a singer can be forgiven for a lot. Gyrations and whatnot, please, that was already happening on stage in the last century. For me, the biggest sin is being chronically off-pitch. And I give a lot of slack before the line is crossed. I'm not perfect pitch so if I pick it up, there's a serious problem there. "in tune strippers," I can handle. "Pitchy strippers," no (unless the volume is off).

  • Wow!In Hollywood in order to get attention and to reestablish your career...self distraction is permitted!
  • Piss poor gal.

If she manages to make even more money AFTER that crap, God help us all.

    Run to the hills!

  • I don't know what happened to my account. Seems like someone got into it and made it look like I was replying to myself. Very odd. Anyway, that mascot comment was meant to be a joke. The whole performance was a joke. The public outrage was a bigger joke. Wish there was similar outrage over wrongs that directly impact folks lives.

So, who hacked into my account? How was it done?

    • Not me, I would have done a lot more damage.
  • I thought only gay men and elementary school girls cared about what miley cyrus did.

Well it's no secret that lack of talent pays very well .... Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and the whole Kardashian crew, Justin Bieber (IMO), Miley Cyrus, and the list goes on and on. I saw some of the video and thought that she is neither a dancer, a singer or an entertainer. Just another untalented twit that sticks her butt out, and her gross looking tongue out, wiggles them and makes news and bank doing it. lol.

I'd try it myself but doubt that the results would be the same.

  • Glad to see there is far less slut-shaming here on the WF than there
is on the rest of the Internet. I knew there was a reason I love you
    people!

As for the marketing/branding, it's an interesting idea. The simple
fact is that I may be disgusted by her performance with Beetlejuice,
but I'm certainly not her target market, either-- I was never going
to buy anything from her anyway, whether she was a Disney Princess
or the next Madonna. That's probably true for most people who
are "disgusted" by her "performance" at the VMAs.

Another interesting point is her lack of attractiveness in the public eye.
So many people are slamming her because she was ugly, not all in the
"right" proportions and sticking her tongue out like a giraffe. I can't help
but wonder that if she had been dressed slightly differently and kept her
tongue in her mouth, or used it in a more seductive manner, would people
still be bitching about the re-branding? Or would most of them be
talking about how "hot" she was?

Marketing is a funny thing. I've seen so many fantastic products and
services fail, and so many crappy ones succeed, even within my own
businesses... I must be getting old, because it seems like the more that
I learn, the less I know.
    • [2] replies
    • Probably the second choice. But to dress slightly different, keep the tongue in her mouth or not to mention, use it in a more seductive way, would require some refinement (which is cultivated in time, not inherited) and respect for her image and her public. And not to mention patience to achieve financial success and not a willingness to resort to all kind of gimmicks.

All of these are virtues miss Cyrus probably doesn't possess.

However, there's also a slight chance that she does possess them, but her target audience doesn't. In this case, I don't know which is worse: catering to a bunch of people who find shaking an ass in uncontrollable ways irresistible, or agreeing with it and thinking it's actually "cool" do it.

  • Maybe I'm just getting too old, but it seemed to me like a promotion of pedophilia. I know she's an adult, but she looks about the same age as my 9 year old. And did anyone else notice all of the bears? They looked eerily like the pedo-bear.

It just royally pissed me off to watch it. Just a few years ago she was being promoted as Hannah Montana to young kids on the Disney Channel, and now she's dancing around half naked on a stage full of pedo-bears singing lyrics like "We can screw who we want". This country has a bad enough problem with young girls being raped, and now we have to constantly wonder if the next Disney Princess is going to convince our young ones to behave like sluts. UGH it pisses me off just thinking about it.

I've never laid a hand on my daughter, but if I ever saw her dancing like that, even at the age of 20 - I'd embarrass her in front of everyone with a good old-fashioned Politically incorrect buttwhoopn.

    • And of zoophilia, too. At one point, a singing zebra was trying to do miss Cyrus from behind. Or was that Robin Thicke? I can't tell.

  • Miley Cyrus is trying to tell the world she's a changed woman. I'm not a fan and surely, I was not impressed with what she did but it's the VMAs. They do everything they want on stage. Miley wants some attention and she's definitely getting it. She's even talked about in this forum.
  • Love her or hate her..

Miley is the most successful and prominent marketer on the planet.

(This isn't about personal taste. This is about her causing 300,000 tweets per minute and breaking social media trending records). source

Does it deserve to be on CNN and FOX when the world is on the brink of world war 3?

    No.

But I recognize what she did.

She got us talking. She got the world talking.

She's the biggest troll on the planet. And controversy creates cash.

    • The BEST marketer? what about the olsen twins?

      https://www.google.com/#psj=1&q=olsen+twins+2013

27 years old, and they have STILL stayed within what families would be happy with! I don't think they have sung, but they have done a LOT of stuff.

      Steve
    • Most successful marketer on the planet? Get real. My mother would answer, "Who?" if I asked her what she thought of Miley Cyrus. Anyway, I don't hate her. I sort of like her. She actually strikes me as kind of nice. Silly but nice. Her singing skills are not the upper echelons of singers but she is probably on par with Britney Spears and Madonna as a singer. I'll reckon that Lady Gaga (one of KimW's favorites...NOT) is a better singer and performer overall. Miley Cyrus's performance was a bit of a train wreck --messy,sexually brazen, and off-pitch. Will this help her "branding" and marketablity? We'll see. Did Oprah's brand and marketablity take a nose-dive after she cut out the raunchy, shocking, and exploitative stuff?
  • I'm in the minority of this subject.. But what did she do that Britney, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, or any other controversial performer hasn't done?

Also.. This is the MTV music awards. Of course there's going to be egregious shenanigans.

I'm not condoning Miley's performance.. But what do people expect from MTV? Are you really that shocked?

This isn't the grammy's. This is MTV music awards; the central host of celebrity debauchery since Madonna did her "like a virgin" back in the day. And when Britney came out dancing on a pole.

Am I saying that's a good thing? No. But it is what it is.

I think the biggest outcry was from the parents who were expecting Miley to be a prominent role model for the youth of America.

I get that. Totally understand it.

But.. If I had kids.. I would be the one setting an example. I'd be the one emulating what an outstanding citizen should be.

Not some fictitious character on TV.

    Know what I mean?

I guess I'm the only one who's not shocked by MTV being MTV.

And I don't believe for a minute Miley didn't know exactly what she was doing, and I believe she knew what the recourse would be.

I think she's happy with the outcome.

She wanted to troll. She wanted to make everyone say "what the heck". She wanted to break Twitter records. And she wanted to sell a million records.

And I'm confident the result will equate to financial success for the performer.

    Maybe I'm wrong?

    • no you are right - but that just reinforces what I said above - mediocrity is embraced - real talent isn't -

I don't respect anyone who feels they have to debase themselves to garner attention. Rather, I feel sorry for them - because that kind of fame fizzles very quickly -

All of the above had/have talent that isn't evident in Miley Cyrus's performance. Lacking the talent to put on a great show, she resorted to "shock". Shock will only work for the short term. Talent endures.

My comments are from an adult that didn't have any children sitting in front of the TV, so I don't care how vulgar her act was from my perspective. I saw the video of the performance and thought ...

      1. how lame
      2. man has she gotten ugly
      3. hmmm ... her singing and dancing are really mediocre

Of course, a ridiculously ugly hair cut and hairstyle (along with the big ole ugly tongue sticking out of her mouth constantly) has a lot to do with the ugliness and that's fixable, but the talent still isn't there.

I wasn't shocked. I'm an adult and have seen my share of raunch and truly shocking things. If for nothing else, to see Rush Limbaugh rant and rave, it was worth it. I just feel like she's a "waning star" that has little else going for her, so this is what she's coming up with to make news.

News is fickle. She was in the news for 2 days for that performance. It's over now. She'll have to come up with yet another stunt to ride a Twitter wave or get in the news again. She's not a Michael Jackson, or Madonna, or Britney or Lady GaGa. Even if not my taste in music, I have to concede that all of the above have/had talent.
  • Just goes to show, eh? Until the Department of Health put out this poster, I was under the impression Miley cyrus was a good bacteria...

  • According to CelebrityNetWorth.com, Celine Dion is worth $400 million and Miley is worth $150 million. As far as I know (and I'm not a Celine expert), Celine has never done anything disgusting or distasteful and she demonstrates that you don't have to.

At a more down to earth level, the dentist I was infatuated with in my twenties is the best example I personally have of what mature women should aspire to be. In a word, classy, strong, and possessing high integrity . (OK, four words.)

In my opinion, Miley is not showing she is a grown up. She is showing the signs of being mishandled since childhood and mishandled now. I believe she is going to wreck - hope not - like Brittany Spears or Michael Jackson and should not be a role model for anybody.

Howard Bloom was Michael Jackson's publicist up to the Monster album. He says that after that the unscrupulous manipulators got in the picture and then we saw the fiasco and tragedy of Michael's later years.

If I were close to Miley, I would be gravely concerned and do all I could do to get her out of this unethical marketing circus.

    • Check out FORBES: The 20 Richest Women In Entertainment - Forbes

As much as I dislike some of them, I think about 18 of the top 20 did NOT go as far as miley did. Miley isn't even on the list, Madonna may be the FIRST to be OBSCENE, and she is only #4. britney may be the second, at number 12. The twins I mentioned are at #11.
