My 4 and a half year old autistic kiddo blows my mind all the time. Makes me so proud.

Right now I'm proud for what some might think is crazy

He woke up from an impromptu nap on the couch and caught me playing DC Universe Online on the PS3. He was FASCINATED - He gets the ideas of heroes and villains to some extent, loves Superman, Batman, Spiderman (typical boy kid stuff) and in a burst of mostly undecipherable jargon let me know that he thought my toon was pretty and that he wanted to fly. He climbed into my lap and asked me VERY sweetly to play.

So I made him a big beefy toon, logged him in to the tutorial, showed him melee and ranged, and let him loose.

Oh. My. Gosh. The first time I did that tutorial I died 3 times *laugh*

He finished it in under 15 minutes - even aced the end battle with 50+ brainiac robots swarming him.

Now he's doing exactly what he said he wanted to do. Flying. All around the city. Dive bombing into bodies of water. Occasionally coming down to hulk smash cars.

Ahhhh to be so easily amused again.

Good for you, Jenny... and him.

Wait until he gets his own tablet.

Actually I got him a Nabi tablet a couple of months ago. They are great for kids (more durable) especially autistic kids (comes preloaded with tons of learning games and a few just for giggles). (and mommy mode so he can't jack it up - invaluable.)

He had that thing figured out in seconds, and within an hour had found the kid videos and was building a playlist !! !! hahaha

He went from Kinda Sorta knowing his ABCs, a little to starting to spell out words he saw, within a week. He can count to 100 now. Puzzles, connect the dots, memory games, coloring in the lines - all things I tried to engage him in but he had no interest in until he had the tablet in his hands. I think electronic is his medium..

Like mother like son I guess :p

At any rate - BEST PURCHASE I EVER MADE!

Plus when he's asleep I get to play Arcane Legends on it muaha

Wow, you sold me. I'll buy one for my son. I wouldn't expect him to master things so quickly like your little one does, lol. Your son is truly remarkable.

Well, of course, *I* think so, but I'm definitely biased hahahah

I'll put it in perspective though. He figured out the Nabi tablet in seconds flat - but he can't seem to understand why it's a bad idea to crawl under the table then stand straight up at lightning speed. No matter how many times he racks his noggin. lol

I would Definitely recommend Nabi to any parent. The only drawback is you can't get Google Play on it without some trickery - they are in some sort of discussion with Google about it and keep saying, Soon - however it's an Android Ice Cream OS and I was able to follow the instructions here UPDATED - Googlie Booglie! ~ Everything Nabi! to sideload everything Google related onto it.

I had to uninstall Google Play because it "stops working" however I have no problem sideloading games from the play store onto the tablet using AirDroid on my phone (which is also an Android Ice Cream device) then Google Drive.

The Google part really only has to do with stuff that I want on mommy mode. The Amazon appstore works perfectly and has more than enough extra stuff for the kiddos.

That is the way it should be but he really does sound like a very amazing kid.

Kids all seem to have different currents of development, sort of like how a river has different layers of currents, some of which don't even go in the same direction.

Which model of Nabi do you have? I have to investigate if there are Nabi Amazon and app accessibility issues for anyone based in Canada, since I've read reviews to the effect that there are. Tablets are all similar in principle, I think. Something robust that can handle a 3-year-old would be best, whatever brand/model it is. I like him work with real objects such as Lego, blocks, train sets, but he has been showing more and more interest in abstract areas such as music, math, and learning Chinese songs where I think tablets could be useful.

BTW Someone just shared a link to an article on Jacob Barnett:
Diagnosed with severe autism as a child, Barnett is now 15 and one of the world’s most promising physicists

Of course the best thing your son has going for him is the attitude of his mother.

All the best to the both of you.

Autism is just a word. As you know, Jenny, it certainly doesn't have to define anybody. Maybe you've seen this. It's truly inspiring:
