Question about uploading files in Hotmail

I'm helping a friend with this (I'm not a Hotmail user)

We are emailing large files using the command
Insert/Files as attachments

Now when I use my own mail system (Pegasus) I select
the files I want to send (which happens instantly) and
when I 'Send' it spends time doing the actual sending.

However with Hotmail it spends time during the
selection phase saying for example "Uploaded 5 of 5"

Then when I "Send" that happens immediately (no delay)

So my question is what is actually happening during
the selection phase in Hotmail.

    As I recall, Pegasus is an email ****CLIENT****! There would be NO point in uploading the files, because THEY ARE THERE!

    HOTMAIL is a WEBSITE that happens to email. Since it is IMPOSSIBLE to email documents on YOUR system, they must first be uploaded to hotmail. THAT is what it is doing! GMAIL does the EXACT SAME THING, for the SAME reason! Outlook, and similar programs are ALSO clients, and work like pegasus.

    BTW WHATEVER process used to email, whether hotmail or pegasus, email can NOT email files, so the files are converted to a special format and included in the email. The client on the OTHER side does the reverse. With hotmail, this may be fast, and somewhat transparent. With a CLIENT, like pegasus, the resultant file would be larger, and delay the sending of the email by an amount that may actually EXCEED that of the upload to hotmail. Of course, it would spool the email so the delay may not be instantly noticeable.

      Thanks Steve, that makes sense.

      As a follow up question why does the upload not start when you actually hit "Send" as you may decide to remove some files or even abort the email in the interim.

        I think it is simply easier to download them when selected. Heck, that would be thes best time anyway. AGAIN, even GMAIL does it the same way.
