Very interesting but why would the people that he says ignore everybody else take any note of him?

Not trying to rain on his parade... I find lots of things he says to be as applicable to my own country as the U.S. but, on a specific point that he advocates: why is it that the only people you ever see in favour of compulsory military service are those too old, or otherwise ineligible for it?

You'd have to ask youself if you'd rather your country was defended by a committed and highly-motivated professional armed service, or one composed of unwilling, unmotivated people who are simply counting down the time until they can get out?

    Regards,
Tommy (who voluntarily served his country and would never have been able to work with people who were only there because the Government forced them to be.)

Compulsory military is the only part I disagreed with.

I think our current system works. Even after 9/11, you saw young men and women sign up specifically to defend our country. I think even if patriotism isn't as obvious now, it's still in our hearts and I trust that if for some reason no one signed up, THEN our govt could enforce it.

Compulsory service is a good idea imho. I served of my own free will, but i think that compulsory service would be good for anyone, especially if it also was linked to the GI bill for college.

Who is included in compulsory service? Will it be that all Americans must serve, no one can be excluded for any reason, including sex and sexual orientation, so long as they have the physical ability to do so?

As it is right now, only males have to register or Selective Service. Will that be extended to females as well? If not, why not? Will homosexuals be allowed to serve? If not, why not?

As it stands now, the military does not allow some groups of people to serve, even if they want to. It must be all, or you must not be able to compel people to serve if not applied across the board.

True... maybe you could be exempted if you walked up to the nearest officer, embrace him, stick your tongue down his throat, and ask him to take you home?

How could involuntary labour be good for anyone? Involuntary labour has always been called slavery... why should it be called anything else when linked to military service?

Besides, even if you think it's good for the individuals involved (I don't; conscript training is almost universally rudimentary and instills little of the disciplined nature that professional servicemen acquire, which I presume is what you mean when you say it would be good for them?), conscription is never practiced for the good of the individual... it's practiced for the good of the State.

And I still say that, when people are coreced into servitude, what results is a low-quality, unmotivated, and ill-disciplined force that, as well as removing the most able-bodied people from the productive sectors of the economy, have, in practice, often been used by the State as a low-cost indentured work force in areas unrelated to actual military service.

Any American in favour of conscription should look at your own country's most recent practical implementation of it, which was (I think) the Vietnam War, where (sometimes extreme) misconduct and indiscipline were far more common among draftees than volunteers.

Just my opinion on the matter...
      Tommy.

As a proud military vet, I do not believe in compulsory service - military or otherwise. Our military is what it is because of the honorable men and women proudly and willingly serving.

I once swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States.. and it deeply saddens me to see what is happening to my once great country.

Obama is a very strong supporter of forced "volunteerism" - that is the only thing that tipped my head when I heard this. Congress knows people are mad as hell - they also know that most won't act on it -- they might also know that if they put out a seemingly pro-republic video with a fascist idea in the middle of it that a lot of our scarcely educated masses will just think that is how freedom is supposed to ring.

Also possible that line will scare off a lot of illegals. Who's going to come here illegally if they are going to be forced into the militia if they do so? LOL.

Have to be careful about what you hear in these things - never know if they are running on facts or preferences unless you know your constitution and supporting documents.
