Petition against amazons return policy for kindle

Hi,

I have signed this petition too, that says to that amazon should change its return policy on kindle books, because they could be read or copied in a way also...

Who is interested to change that rule, lets give it a chance together...
not much more signups needed to change.org to send the results to amazon.

    I offer money-back guarantees on my PDF digital products. Why would I not want to give consumers the same opportunity when they buy my products in Kindle format?

      Similar to the copied music and video games argument. People will always copy and steal, but they will always be a small proportion of the entire market.

      'Russell Peters' went worldwide when his comedy video was YouTubed... off the back of that he has sell out tours.

      You will get returns no doubt, but you will also get an increase in sensible and honest buyers who are now more likely to purchase due to the decreased risk.

      The same stats have been seen in the Music and Video Games copying scenarios... where publishers are now making more then ever...

      Tip - add a little marketing into your books and even if it's copied, you can still promote other services. This is what happened in video games so even copied games earn companies revenue.

      What MANY people do NOT seem to realize is that money is NOT there to buy things! It is for ******EXCHANGE****** YOU, as a group, are not buying or selling, but exchanging!

      Person A can write a book. He gets paid to write the book. Money=BOOK
      Person B can translate ENGLISH to spanish. She gets paid to translate. Money=TRANSLATION
      Person C knows plumbing, and decides to teach plumbing. Money=PLUMBING KNOWLEDGE
      Person D has damaged plumbing, and can only deliver fliers, and speaks only spanish. Money=Fliers, but WHAT could she do?

      Well, person D COULD deliver fliers for B's business, and pay person A, but person A doesn't know plumbing OR spanish. So they pay C for the knowledge, and B for translation to provide the book for D.

      So who REALLY is doing whatever for the other? Ideally, NEITHER is! THAT is why it is called COMPENSATION! If you provide the book, and get tangibles back, you are made whole. If THEY provide the money, only the money or an equivalent thing they need or desire makes them whole! And THAT is why we have refunds! And that is why we have MONEY!

    So if they cancel the return policy, the customer will do chargebacks. Due to more chargebacks, they will need to add processing fees (no longer free to publish) or give less commission.

    Less commission and or additional processing fees for the author may mean the author goes elsewhere to sell their goods. Less authors means that Amazon starts to lay off employees due to less profits. Less profits also may cause them to raise the prices on Kindles (the machine) which may deter people from buying Kindles and sticking to Apple or other products. Less profit overall means that Amazon may reduce commissions on affiliate products across the board.

    As Amazon continues to lose profits, employees, market share, etc. there's less opportunity in the Kindle market overall for the authors.

    Sounds good. Where do I sign?

      No offense, but the petition seems pointless

      Customers will chargeback if they aren't happy with the product, or purchased by accident (I purchased a Kindle book by accident once myself, because of 1-click ordering on the Kindle, and I'm no novice).

      Amazon would rather keep a good relationship with a customer who may go on to buy thousands or tens of thousands of stuff from Amazon over their lifetime, than fight over a Kindle charge for $0.99 or $2.99 etc

      FWIW if you are worried about customers copying on Kindle, there is a DRM feature, you can enable.

        Unlike some government entities, Amazon has no obligation to pay any attention whatsoever to a petition, online or otherwise. Amazon, no matter how much we anthropomorphize it, is a publicly traded profit-seeking business entity. As such, the only votes that count are the ones that help that entity fulfill its fiduciary responsibilites - people backing their votes with a credit card.

        I certainly wouldn't scrap what's made me the dominant force in ebooks because of a few unverified whiners with a digital petition.

          10% of my Kindle books get refunded. None of my printed books. And this is over a few thousand sales.

          It's just a fact of life that some people read a Kindle book, and then get a refund. It isn't the book, it's the mindset of the buyer.

          If you couldn't return a Kindle book purchase, it would hurt sales. There is a net gain by having a liberal return policy.

          Unless your Kindle book sucks, and then you have problems.

    I didn't know you could return a Kindle book. I've read a few that were disappointing and it upset me that I had paid for them. But I just chalked it up to life, and it never crossed my mind to consider if I could ask for a refund because it is a digital product.

    Perhaps others think the same way, so you won't be swamped with refunds.

      I think people who really know about how to get refunds on Kindle books, are people who get refunds as a matter of course. They get refunds on all the Kindle books they "buy", not just one.

    Doesn't Kindle keep track a little bit and know who the repeat offenders are? It would seem they know which buyers are serial refunders and at least notify them they are aware of their refunding habits.

      You would think so, wouldn't you. But there is no real cost with digital product, so I imagine it isn't worth policing. But I know some of the big Information Marketers keep lists of serial refunders, and won't sell to them again.

      And I know they do the same thing with other marketers.

      Yeah, I won't sell off of a guarantee. But large companies like Amazon, have to have liberal refund policies. It helps sales, and gets rid of consumer claims.

        Actually, there IS a cost! You have a number of fees that may be charged REGARDLESS of the outcome, and there are normal bandwidth related fees. Most here won't even hit thresholds to really see the impact, but you can bet a retailer like amazon DOES. THEY don't want refunds anymore than YOU do. But they don't want chargebacks and the like EITHER. They ALSO know they have a tightrope to walk.

        If I DIDN'T write back to them, the seller might have been upset at amazon, and amazon and I could BOTH have a mark against us in the sellers book. Although not EXACTLY like I thought, the product was good quality, shipped well, and with some pieces I didn't plan on likely WILL work. BOTH companies are OK in my book, so I asked them to reverse the refund.

        If they DIDN'T have the guarantee, and I lost the product, and they refused to refund me on the 1 (of THREE) shipments, I would have charged back, and we could all be mad at one another. I did that with DR, and they blackballed me for a while. Legally, they caused 3 companies to BREACH CONTRACTS, and caused several other companies to lose sales. They are lucky I EVER did business with them again, but some companies are POORER for that STUPID act! WHY did I do a chargeback?

        1. They didn't give me my product.
        2. They disabled my ability to try to get the product.
        3. They didn't give me a way to correct it.

    The guarantee is a way to protect the customer, and simply increases sales. Smart people, EVEN IF DISHONEST, wouldn't want to endanger a good relationship. HECK I, in another thread just talked about this, and it makes me feel SAFER ordering things through them! They honored the guarantee to a degree I never wanted or expected, and I actually emailed them practically begging that they charge my card AGAIN!!!!!! Their response?

    That was a SHOCKER! I went OUT OF MY WAY to ask them to recharge my card, and they asked me to verify it! Of course, I responded, and they said:

    Hello from Amazon.com.

    I should probably check on the amount. Interesting! But it was nice that they did this. My package was almost LOST! One reason I felt safe about ordering was because they promised that I would have it soon enough. A delay of even 3 days could have meant I couldn't get it.
