You should believe that you are starting on a clean slate.

    Why?

Because it would crush you to learn that you're really not! HAHHAHAHaaaaaa!

    Oh, sorry.

Come to think of it -- what is a "slate"? I figure it's something like blackboard, presumably made of slate rock, but it's not actually a word I regularly use in my daily life. Checking search engine results. Whoah, more complicated than I imagined...

I always thought it had something to do with school slates, which is what schoolkids wrote on in times past:

I have no idea what you are talking about....

But I actually have an answer, I believe.
Never accept what you want to believe. Question why you believe something. Cross examine the reasons you think one way or another.

If you like one idea, but the evidence shows something else...you have to let your idea go.

Never defend a belief. If someone attacks it, try to examine if their attack makes sense. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.

Never hold a belief to be absolute. Never invest in a belief, until evidence makes is a fact. And then if new evidence appears, test that. Your opinions will evolve.

Other people agreeing with you is not evidence. Don't be swayed by peer pressure.

Positions are not thoughts. Positions almost always do not reflect the truth.

And if someone disagrees with you, don't be alarmed if you discover that you are wrong.

But the biggest thing I can tell you...is that there are not two sides to any issue. Arguments are always fought by two people with incomplete information. Nearly always, both are completely wrong.

And never fall in love with your point of view. They change as you learn more.

If you're starting with a clean slate, examine everything you think, dissect it and reassemble it. Eventually the reality will reveal itself. And more often than not, you won't like it.

And I bet this isn't what you wanted to hear. And you're not starting with a clear slate. Only newborns are.

Yep, have an assumption of something, then regardless of what popular media says, go out and see if it is true or not!

Then after years of research and making sure you are sane, show your evidence to the world.

Then have people who couldn't be bothered, going down the track of self research, tell you that you are crazy, since your concrete evidence, (in your self research) doesn't fit popular media or their beliefs, based on what mass media says!

Then go away at least thinking you tried to push society up another small notch or two, but some want to stay where they are, which of course is ok, as long as any conversations are open!

Although other lines of research with overwhelming evidence can still get blackballed if it goes against popular media.

Or if you show them pictures of ducks, they will dismiss it to the point of insanity, that it is a pink elephant!

Long held beliefs, and insanity seem to go hand in hand!

Or as Edison said, stupidity is infinite!

Unfortunately still true to this day! Sniff!

And to me slate is a sedimentary rock that often is associated with fossils. I have a couple of pieces of slate with trilobites in them.

So there ya go. Lots of ways to look at slate, each being correct in the context the thinker is putting it into.

Of course, we can all just look up the origin of the phrase "Clean Slate". But this is more fun.

I'm assuming that "Slate" started off as you say. And then slate was used in chalkboards. And "Clean slate" just means that the chalkboard is either clean or has had everything erased.

So a clean slate means no agenda, or starting over.

Exactly - "clean slate" is an allusion to a freshly washed chalkboard - it's got no predetermination, no rules - you can do about anything with it your heart desires. Of course, there's always some busybody who has to try to tell you to write something 500 times on it. They are harder to erase, but dumping water on them is certainly a good means of entertainment.

Be upset at failure and ignore it. Focus on the process. Focus on the results. Trust everyone and trust no-one. Think like a businessperson. Think like a customer. Most cliches in business have an opposite cliche, when you get emotional or you have a limited level of confidence you commit to one way of thinking, which has detrimental consequences.

And if you knew the populace and dynamics of the OT, you'd realize that time here is not wasted.

Silly wabbits. Slates are for billiards tables. People realized they could be laid against a wall and written on after the first uncivilized person ripped the felt with a chalked cue on a break.
