Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I like them. They even have a buyers remorse period. If you have a change of heart about a domain you bought you can get a refund for up to three days I think it is. I've never used it, but it would be handy if you ever made a typo in a domain you buy.

The only thing that is a little bit of a pain is when you pay. If you want to pay with Paypal you end up clicking about 4 links to finally pay. Still in all, I've been happy with them.

Yeah, sadly, a number of hosting companies do this! Eventually, many of THEM get gobbled up I once looked for a new webhost, and didn't find one that looked like it was owned by someone else until my SIXTH try! HECK, my first host was bought by a company that I think someone ELSE bought and then THEY were bought by YAHOO!!!!!

EIG began buying up companies YEARS ago when they couldn't cut it as a web host known as Bizland. Unfortunately, they have a reputation for destroying the companies they buy - they are an equity owned company...only profits matter, nothing else.

    Have a read here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/editorials...es-eig-pt1.htm

Most people have no clue and the ones who do know ONLY know mainly because of they major screw up with the migrations. Everything is done in secret.

I'm happy with Hostgator but after looking at Namecheap hosting prices I'm considering moving to Namecheap. I already buy all my domains at Namecheap which has been a good experience.

Anyone hosting with Namecheap right now, anything good/bad to say about their hosting?

Not interested in anyone with the word host in their forum sig. (competition).

I would recommend them, yes, even as direct competition. Read my post history, no posts for just sig dropping.

They are going for an IPO.

The filing is even worse, when it comes to showing their inner workings. They have money issues, for example. I'm working on an analysis, but it takes a while because the used a lot of euphemisms, and it's a long SEC document.

They bought HG back in June 2012.
They just finished buying out Directi this month, which includes several hosts (Reseller Club, etc)

well i did like hostgator - from both sides of the aisle - my own sites and also working technical support for our clients in the past. really sad if it is now whacked.

our required host for members in 10 yrs went from host4profit to hostgator to justhost = (this one fondly referred to as justsux hosting by yours truly - so anything will be an improvement - the absolute worst support on earth even tho we paid extra 4 'priority support'); and now GVO-HostThenProfit = fantastic senior level support 1-hour/24-7.

maybe i will move my stuff from hostgator if it starts to deteriorate to GVO-HostThenProfit

p.s. i hate monopolies and i will go out of my way not to support them.

Yeah. It's amazing how many hosting companies are owned by EIG.

My jaw dropped when I first saw the list on wikipedia as I've used most of those hosts jumping from one to another because of bad service in the past.

No wonder the service was equally poor or worse when moving between them.

    Thanks for the eye-opener!!
I particularily liked this part (from the many informative links...)

    What happened to Hostgator?
Back in June 2012, Hostgator was sold for $225 million dollars to Endurance International Group (EIG).
Brent Oxley — founder of Hostgator, former CEO, the primary reason it was so good for so long, and one rich son-of-a-gun — is now gone. Over the past 14 months, EIG has made a number of major changes to Hostgator, all of which have resulted in degraded performance and poor uptime for customers.
