False alarm! This began as a police chase and shots fired as a result of this.

    The lockdown has been lifted.

It wasn't a false alarm! As I understand it, a woman broke through a barricade, apparently shots were fired, and she and a police officer were at least hurt. I have a couple theories of how this may be used. I wonder how close I will get. We'll see....

This will be an interesting story - reportedly there was a child in the car...and latest reports say the driver is dead. Videos on this chase are wild.

Capitol Hill shooting: Driver of car pronounced dead, child in protective custody

Just to add - when I said "false alarm", I meant it wasn't someone out to attack Capitol Hill. It was a chase that ended there.

I can understand the fear people may have endured, though.

              Karen,

I was horrified when I heard that, then saw a police officer carrying her.

I was working and had the volume on low, half a$$ listening to the reports. I'm sure the question "Would you have shot knowing a child was in the car?" The response was "Yes".

I don't know what the mother did to put her own child in that kind of danger.

EDIT: Just heard the mother's boyfriend has said the mother may have been delusional. Don't know if this could be the result of drugs etc.

The report I heard this morning was that she was suffering from postpartum depression (according to her mother) and then full out depression. No word whether she was on any drugs though (legal or otherwise).

                Tragic.

You wouldn't know it from watching the Cops TV show, but criminals usually get away in these chases. I think all cars should have a feature for police to disable them. Eventually it will happen.

You can NOT be serious. That is so scary I don't even know where to start.

Jody - cops are starting to shoot into crowds fairly regularly anymore. It's not unusual to hear about bystanders being hit in crossfire now.

        What are your concerns?

And don't say abuse by hackers because security measures can be put in place so that the process requires more than just the police device.

My concern is the government having power to shut down my vehicle any time I want to go somewhere. What do you mean what's the concern. You are advocating complete and abject slavery and calling it a good thing. That whole mindset is just crazy scary.

DDD might not realize it, but US government agencies HAVE discussed this! Oddly enough, I was thinking about this only a couple days ago. But they HAVE talked about:

        1. Record keeping systems to track driving.
        2. Control systems to control driving, even to stopping the vehicle.
        3. Jamming devices to jam even cell phones.
        4. Breathalizers.
        5. GPS systems to track the vehicles.
        6. Various jamming devices for guns.

If implemented TODAY, these could add over $1000USD to the cost of a car, and hundreds to guns. The idea is to FORCE the makers to add them, and have the buyers pay for them in the cost of the car.

I'd like to see GPS devices on cars that limits the speed to the posted speed limit. You could override the system by pressing an emergency button, which would also alert 911.

Fine - if you need s government to control what you do because you can't be responsible for your own life - there are plenty of socialist/fascist countries that will take care of you -- but don't f*** with my rights. I don't need a nanny and reject YOU thinking you have a right to control MY actions. That's called fascism. I would hate to be your neighbor. You sound like a control freak.

BTW one site said that the FOLLOWING is what happened.....

    1. She drove down, and was shocked to see the barricade.
    2. They acted threatening.
    3. She perceived her life to be in danger and tried to quickly leave.

With all those jailed, tortured, and even killed, it IS a possible way this happened. If so, THEY are responsible, and should be charged with MURDER as well as other crimes. Have any REAL videos come to light? The ones that show it from a distance just DO NOT CUT IT!

Post partum depression has been associated with a number of murder/suicides. I don't want to judge because it is a severe body chemistry disorder that affects the brain. I can't begin to imagine being in that person's shoes, being a male and all that, but I can't imagine a state of mind that would make we want to harm or kill any innocent person, especially a child. If it came to that, I'd shoot myself first.

    UPDATE:
This description of what was going on in her mind seems much like schizophrenic delusions:
"Federal investigators in Washington told reporters Friday that Miriam Carey had been under the delusion that President Obama was communicating with her and had her home city of Stamford, CT under 'lock down.' "

Whatever the description of her mental state - I saw videos, and it shows SHE didn't hit the barricade. It was a cop that hit the barricade. She was shot and killed .......unarmed.

Our entire congress stood and gave police a standing ovation for killing a mentally ill, unarmed woman.

US citizens used to get trials before being executed.

While I don't disagree that cops seem to be getting more aggressive, you have to keep in mind that when someone uses a car to hit or attempt to hit a cop (which from what I understand she did), then as far as the cop (and the law) is concerned, that is assault with a deadly weapon and in some cases, attempted murder. Cops get the green light to respond in kind. Especially if they feel their life is in danger.

My son had a friend who was shot by police for the same reason. Shot a few times in fact. No charges were filed after the investigation because it was deemed a justified shooting, and self defense.

The problem now is every media outlet playing Monday morning QB. As I am sure you are aware, when you are in the thick of things, you don't have the time to do anything except react.

And about Congress clapping - I don't believe for a second that they were clapping because the cops killed some unarmed woman with a baby in the car. They didn't know at that point (in fact, the cops were surprised to find a baby after they shot her). At that point in time, all they knew was they were under a lock down. They were simply and most likely applauding the cops doing their job and the lock down being lifted.

Let's not unnecessarily stir the crap and keep things in perspective. As someone who doesn't care much for MSM, you seem to be buying in to this story...

SAME THING! And WHO CARES about the kid! Would the simple MURDER of a person be MEANINGLESS witout a child nearby?

The idea of a lockdown is a SENSELESS NON SEQUITOR! That sort of thing happens ALL THE TIME! I have had variants of it happen from a simple evacuation of a building to the actual restricting of travel within an area. It is USUALLY a FALSE ALARM! USUALLY, people DON'T get hurt, much less killed! The cops did their job by killing a woman? And WHY applaud? Why don't they simply *******DO THEIR JOB*******!?!?!?!?

Cops didn't used to shoot unarmed people - and they do now. What changed?

I'm pretty sure you are right that they reacted fast - but what I saw on video doesn't match the official story. (go figure). It sent chills up my spine to see congress stand and applaud ANYONE being shot for ANY reason. I'm sorry. To me that is some spooky stuff right there. I don't care what the circumstances. They applauded when they were told the perp was dead. That is NOT kewl.

Well, since we were not in lock down with congress it's hard to know what they were told (if anything). Perhaps they thought the cops thwarted something more nefarious then simply some deranged woman. I would applaud if the cops protected me and my family by killing someone. No issue for me there.

As much as we'd like to demonize all cops that's hardly fair to the good ones who put their lives on the line day after day. Let's not forget that DC is one of the most violent cities in the US, and is also at the top of the terror attack list. That probably makes them twice as edgy.

As for unarmed - according to the law she WAS armed. With a car. A couple of tons of metal traveling at a deadly rate of speed (if she hit someone).

And I also disagree regarding cops never shooting people in the past. We simply have a worldwide 24 hour news cycle now. Before the internet I hardly knew what was happening in the next town, much less across the country. I agree it's worse - but you yourself talk about the alarming rise in people on psychotropic drugs. Should cops not be able to react? Protect themselves or others?

The lines are blurred enough without the ridiculous memes that do nothing but make things worse...

          In my opinion, anyway

What they do is purposely stand in front of the car so they have an excuse to shoot. Police in the US are always looking for an excuse to shoot. It helps them get the high ranking promotions later on in their career. Cops that have been involved with killing a suspect are deemed to be more well rounded.

And you know this as fact because...?

Sorry, but a ridiculous statement. I agree there are cops who do some very questionable things, but that hardly makes all of them bad. That's like saying all us Italians are mobsters because you saw the Godfather (great movie).

Remember - on most days, cops do all kinds of good - but it's not exciting enough for the news cycle. Believe me - if the cops went away, you would regret it. Quickly.

          Just saying...

You'd think. But cops will tell you that in their training they are taught that when someone is a danger to them or the public, shoot to kill - not wound. I would be willing to bet that if you ask a cop why not shoot the tires out, they would say that it would be too risky - believe it or not, bullets can ricochet off tires - which could potentially hit a bystander, etc.

      But I am just guessing...
