There are now Armadillos in Kentucky?

  • Kentucky is the state where both Abraham Lincoln, President of the Union, and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, were born. They were born less than one hundred miles and one year apart.

  • Kentucky is the most ironic state. Christian County allows liquor sales, Bourbon County doesn't. Barren county has the most fertile land. Oh, and 'Big Bone Lick' wasn't at ALL what I thought it was...

  • Did you know George Clooney was born in Ky.?
And... so was his aunt, Rosemary Clooney.
  • Bluegrass is called that because Bill Monroe was born in Ky and started it there.

Also, did you know that when I started this thread I didn't intend it to be solely about Ky.?
But, it's working out rather well, so far.

  • IT's the home of the Kentucky Derby, too.

Used to go through there on the way to Florida to be with my grandparents for Christmas - my best memories of the place:

    Mammoth Caves
    Henry Clay's mansion
Life size statue of Sea Biscuit.

It's also the Historical "gateway to the west" -- and the graveyard to the west. The swamps bred insects that spread a lot of disease and a lot of people headed west for the gold rush never made it further than Louisville.

    • The Cumberland Falls is the only place on Earth to produce a "Moon Bow".
A Rain bow generated by the light of a full moon.
  • If you're looking for something different to do on vacation, take a trip to Lexington.
They have the Kentucky Horse Park, which is very cool.
But, if you take day or two to follow the back roads around Lexington to New Paris and several other small burgs, you'll some of the most beautiful countryside and world famous horse farms that are straight out of Hollywood. Beautiful rolling pastures, 100+ year old stone walls, and white fences surrounding hundreds of acres.
    And mile long, tree-lined driveways.

    But.....
Did you know that Simon Kenton, namesake of Kenton, County, and close friend of Daniel Boone, escaped so many Shawnee attacks that they came to believe he was protected by God and would not engage him in battle? He escaped being burned at the stake on 3 consecutive attempts.
Once by an interuption by a Shawnee chief, and once by British soldiers, allies of the Shawnee, and the 3rd time by rain dousing the fire.
  • Kentucky (and a very good doctor) saved my ex-neighbors' life.
    Kentucky horses actually.

    He was an alcoholic taxi-driver.

I don't know if the doctor tricked him,
but he was told that he would die within
a month if he kept drinking. Very enlarged liver.

Within a week he stopped drinking, looked very good,
and got in touch with friends from when he was a jockey
at the long ago closed Centennial Racetrack in Littleton, CO.

Soon after that he moved to Kentucky to train horses.
    His first love.

  • Did you know.....
There were no indigenous Native tribes in KY.?
Because of the incredible amount of game and fish it was considered sacred ground.
Daniel Boone REALLY pissed them of.

    • Now that's an interesting fact, LC. Michigan had a copper boulder that weighed a ton or so in one of it's waterways - also considered sacred to Indians, who did inhabit the area. Pissed them off when it was finally taken. Lot of land disputes between the US and tribes over it. I've never heard of a territory of plentiful game being off limits, though.

Some areas which weren't touched were due to standing water - mosquitoes and other insects that caused disease. That would be worth tribes staying away from . Sacred might just be taboo because when they hunted there, they got bit and sick - hence, he gods get pissed if we go there perception. Makes sense to me.

At least you've let the artifact hunters of the Mid Eastern states know not to bother for them there. LOL.
  • Did you know The Licking River is so named because of the surrounding salt deposits that drew huge amounts of Elk, Bear, Bison, and other game? ( They would lick the salt. :rolleyes
