Anthropologists unearthed the skull at a site in Dmanisi, a small town in southern Georgia, where other remains of human ancestors, simple stone tools and long-extinct animals have been dated to 1.8m years old.
The site was a busy watering hole that human ancestors shared with giant extinct cheetahs, sabre-toothed cats and other beasts. The remains of the individuals were found in collapsed dens where carnivores had apparently dragged the carcasses to eat.
Hmm... A homo erectus in Europe 1.8 million years ago.

OK, I THOUGHT a human brain was supposed to be about 1500ccs The following says that, at least at one time, they WERE: If Modern Humans Are So Smart, Why Are Our Brains Shrinking? | DiscoverMagazine.com

So the smallest one in that find was about 1/3rd the current size. Given that it was a creature that was SO proportioned.... 1/3rd isn't THAT weird. To put this into perspective, the brain would STILL be larger than a large chimp! BTW it seems that the size of the brain is based on the size of the creature, age, and specialization as well as sex and type. And the shape can certainly change.

Of course, current humans can also have microcephaly, etc... Maybe earlier ones could ALSO! One person with a very EXTREME case of microcephaly is rumored to have actually been FAR smarter than he let on, and was apparently of about normal intelligence. ALSO, MANY current humans have had half their brain removed and were STILL of average intelligence!
