If you don't pay, you never get them back and you'll never be able to unlock them either--the encryption is too strong. Plus most antivirus programs are not catching the virus. Be aware and read this:

Thanks. I hadn't seen that inoculator for it.

Very handy ounce of prevention for a nasty bit of malware.

Paul, which do you suggest I download, the portable version or the setup
      installer? What's the difference?

    Steven,

I didn't really look at the differences. Just tested the standard product.

I just bought the auto-update version. Hope it works. Really nasty malware and being forced to pay criminals to fix it would really piss me off.

I just downloaded it but have no clue what their page was saying. I'm not techie enough to do much but push the buttons. I really appreciate threads like this. This forum has kept my computer running since 2005....and I have even been able to help out a few other people now and again. Not this time though. To me, hash is served with eggs.

Edit - do I have to do anything with this other than "apply" it?

  • Yeah, it's confusing. I just hit "Apply" haha. I think that should do it.

This might help. Here's the video channel for the developer.

I think this is the video that explains it although this is for the previous version. Haven't had time to look at it yet.

A friend of mine told me he got hit with the virus. Somehow he was able to get Norton AV to remove it but it took 17 hours. I have no idea how.

Update--the latest is to watch out for phishing emails from "Google Voice" or "Unity Messaging" systems. Or fake emails from a bank saying a deposit to your account was dropped by accident mid-deposit.

Do not click links or attachments.

As before, also watch out for fake emails from fake package delivery companies - read this one:

I had an idiotic one just yesterday, I believe it was.

Supposedly from Walmart. It had the "official" Walmart Heading then where a logo should have been, it said, "Walmart Logo".

The email proceeded to tell me that the return I made on my big ticket item was not successfully credited to my bank account and to click on the following link to give them my bank information to complete it. If I didn't respond in 10 days, they would close the issue and I wouldn't get my money back.

Over and beyond all that idiocy, the sender email was...Walmart (forgot other word)@ gmail dot com.

      Stupid!!!

Oh, and I don't even shop at Walmart!!

Do people really fall for this stuff?

Well, they send these out by the tens of millions from countries
where a few hundred USD is a lot of money.

And they make mistakes on purpose-- They want to weed-out people
like you, who are too savvy to ever fall for something like this.

But we all know that elderly person who has very little experience
on the Interwebs, or the young person who falls for every get-rich quick
scheme... Hell, I've made some really stupid purchases myself
after imbibing a little too much wine!

I've never seen so many er, dumb items for sale compiled all together in one place before, haha!

Well, okay, a couple of the really expensive ones, the over $6,000 ones were kind of cool, but not cool enough to entice me to break out the plastic.

There is also the simple solution: Switch away from Windows to something
    like Ubuntu.

For anyone who cares, the Cryptolocker "team" claims to have made over
50,000 Bitcoins ($30,000+ when all is said and done) since September...
I really hate scum like this. Had I the resources, I might pay them and trace
it... After all, we're not limited by the restrictions that law enforcement is,
    are we?

Anyway, it's a large piece of code, they will probably find some kind
of hole in it like they did with the other big worm-ransomware that was
released back in 2007... It just took like two years.

In the mean time, yep, remote automatic backup is the best solution
for anyone who insists on continuing to use Windows.

If you get a lot of emails, it's easy to go too fast and click the wrong link.

Or you click on a link because you were distracted--maybe the cat jumped on your head and put its paws on your eyes.
