Hello Warriors,

My name is Casey and I'm a long time lurker. I'm not trying to sell anything to anyone here, just wanted to share what happened to me in case someone else needs a spark or a glimmer of hope that you CAN make money online, even if nothing has clicked with you for the longest time. So let me back up to how it started...

I spent from 2003 - 2012 working as a personal trainer. Well, in 2008, we had my son and my wife and I arrived at the decision that I would work in the early morning and in the evening, and stay home with him during the day while she worked. Well that was great except it reduced my hours I could work. So that's when I decided i needed to really make the most of the time I could work. I looked into getting a website and had a lot of sticker shock. Well being the nerd/cheapskate I am, I figured if someone else can build a website, so can I. So after hours of watching youtube tutorials, i did it. It was actually a really nice site I managed to put together.

The problem was it was getting nowhere on google and nobody visited it. So in reading a fitness marketing blog, i decided to invest in a $200/month course on how to rank your sites. I did it. It worked. I rocked the $#I+ out of google locally...I'm talking 8 out of the top 10. Well as I learned more about marketing, I started to discover the world of online marketing...the thought of creating a product, having affilliate sites, PPC, CPA, they all sounded awesome. So I'd pick something and start on it...after a couple days, my ADD kicked in and I'd abandon it for something else...I think many of us know the cycle. This went on for years. Until Tuesday.

Fast forward to today. In 2012, we moved and I decided to get my master's degree. We now have a daughter as well and I stay with her during the day and take night and online classes. I'm feeling like crap because my wife is the sole breadwinner, since I'm in school and stuck at home in the daytime with my daughter. Well, by chance this past Tuesday on Facebook I start talking to one of my friends who is a trainer where I used to live. He mentioned to me that it drives him nuts that I still outrank him even though I've been gone for a year and hadn't touched the sites in at least 2 years.

The next thing he said was the game-changer, light bulb moment for me.

He said, "I'm paying a guy $250 a month to do my site maintenance and SEO and I am stuck on page 5"

I facepalmed so hard I had a welt. WHY THE HECK DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT? I was so obsessed with the online aspect, I failed to really put much into the offline stuff. Sure, I read many, many posts about offline...but for whatever reason it never clicked until I spoke with someone I knew who I had the skills to help.

Well that was the start of a snowball, (hopefully a large one). He fired his guy and hired me to run his site/SEO. Plus, it gave me the idea to do site leasing to a couple friends who just started a business.

Tuesday, I was making $0/month online. Today, (just turned Sunday) I have $400/mo. coming my way for a skill I've had for years, but never thought about monetizing because I was attracted by all the shiny new websites and offers popping up.

Before you run around purchasing all the latest products and cool gimmicks...take a good look at what skills you already have. If they're something people will pay for, use them. I failed for 5 years at using the web to make money. All it took was one conversation which led to a major epiphany and suddenly I can say I make a monthly online income.

$400/month might not sound like a lot to many of you. But to me, it means with a couple more clients, I'll be bringing in enough to pay for my Master's degree with no loans. And that is a big deal.

Thanks for reading...hope it encourages someone out there

  • Finally, this success will lift you a higher level of success. Good start (even after 5 years, doesn't matter)
  • Casey....

Congratulations! You have a great story and it is very inspirational!

Your skill in ranking locally for business sites is highly valuable. Being as knowledgeable as you are in this area will always allow you to write your own ticket.

You also caught on to the idea that leveraging your current contacts through social media is a great way to start to accelerate your business. Keep reaching out to people on Facebook/Twitter. You don't even have to hard sell. Just keep adding value on there. As you read people's posts, you'll get an idea about where they're at and invariably you'll be able to perfectly time reaching out to help them grow their business.

Look into LinkedIn as well. It is extremely powerful way to market your skills.

    Again, congrats!
  • Sounds good, but just make sure you stay smart in this ever changing niche.

Congrats for your perseverence and keep it going! We can all learn from your example that we shouldn't give up.
  • MOTIVATIONAL!

Congrats, Casey! I think it's awesome that you're beginning to find your feet on IM. Hopefully, this is the start of a long, successful IM-career.

    All the best to you!

    • I am really happy for you. That is a great story. You persisted long enough for it to come to you and that says a lot about who you are.
  • Congratulations. This is a very inspiring story. You've now got something you can leverage into something bigger and knowing you can do it will give you the added confidence to make it happen.
  • Congrats. Local offline is great.

If you're not using your trainer site, have you considered just leasing that for $500 (or more) per month to your friend? Of course you want to retain the right to get it back if you start training again, but it's a way to make money off of your past efforts.
  • wow you're amazing i wish i had your patience and perseverance

    • Love the turn of events. Hope it buys you more time for family and studies. What are you majoring in?
  • Congrats Casey! I'm glad that you're taking things to the next level, and leveraging your time online to reach your goals. This should be inspiring to all of those people who are lurking, not taking action, and not earning money online.
  • Congratulations, hard work pays off!
  • Congratulations man. This kind of story will help others on here no end. It's very easy to give up and it's not easy to make money online without a lot of effort, hard work and patience.
  • Wow. Nice job Casey.

It just goes to show how important to use the skills you have or ones you have picked up along the way.
  • Wow, quite a story! I'm glad that you finally succeeded. Good for you! Congratulations!

Way to go. Your story is an inspiration. I wish I have the courage and the determination to follow my own path to success like you did. It sometimes feels like this line of business gives you many ways out, rather than clear paths.
  • Nice, just scale this thing up. 400$ is almost nothing, if you stop thinking in terms of money and instead in terms of value, there are litereally limitless possibilities out there.

    • Casey, Congrats !

A few years ago I too had nearly the same ah ha moment when I realized that hundreds of businesses in my own backyard needed some of the basic skills I had developed during my chase for the pot o' Internet gold! I went from one to three customers in just over 2 months. I sold 2 - $3000 websites and the monthly maintenance to boot.

I had to scale back for some health reasons about 1 year ago but I am now ready to jump back in with a new spirit. I used my downtime to sharpen the saw and I am nearly finished with my web developer's degree. Your post made me realize that the spark is still there!

Keep doing, learning and giving back whenever you can!

      Cheers!

  • Congratulations on your success! I bet you thought it'd be super easy and you'd start earning big amounts of money within a week when you first 'met' with Internet Marketing, eh?

Took me two years! But it was worth it

    Cheers,

    Jan
  • That's awesome! Congratulations! As I recently heard an internet marketing leader say, "The only people who fail online are those who quit!" Great story of perseverance!
  • So happy that you are getting somewhere now. It just goes to show you that the skill you develop and the investment you make in yourself cannot be taken away. Never ever quit!
  • awesome story, you need to build a list and reach your audience that way, with gifts, info, sound, video that will attract people to you, and get them to take up lots of stuff you can offer them.
  • Any success is a great success in my opinion. Whether it's $400 a month or $4000. The main thing is that you figured out -- or was able to solve a problem that someone had. Now that you know that, duplicate your efforts to make it continuously happen with other prospects.
  • 5 years to get to $400/month? You must not have put much effort. But congrats
  • That's a great story!
Congrats for your perseverence and keep it going!
We can all learn from your example that we shouldn't give up.
  • Congrats to you Casey.

This is what happened to me tough, when i started doing Internet Marketing.

    I wish you more success.
  • Congrats on that $400/month. Some money is better than no money.

  • Congrats you are lucky you achieved your target
  • This is awesome Casey, big congratulations! I suspect this is a case with many people out there, that they have a skill they could easily monetize but don't think to do so. Your story is very inspiring, thanks for sharing
  • What an awesome story. Sometimes, I feel that I should quit and just be done with it. But, you've made me think that there's a way. Thanks!
  • Congras!
i love this story... it gave me an extra motivation to get going and you know not do everything yourself.
When you hit a brick wall, sometimes outsourcing it key.

  • What really matter is that you finally arrived and i can bet it with you that this is beginning of good thing in your internet business.
  • Indeed, an inspiring story.. Look deep inside and you'll find the greatness in you.
  • Very inspirational, glad to hear that you're finding success!
  • Congrats.
    Gotta ask.
What was the name of the course that you took???

    Thanks
  • This is an example of getting rich in a gold rush. The ones who really get rich in a gold rush are the traders who sell the mining equipment and tools to the people looking to get rich quick. They got very rich but a bit slower than the few who did strike gold.
